  1. Looks like Shoemaker is this year's Homer Bailey. Meh, alright. He's got a decent track record, and if healthy he can give the Twins some innings and maybe a few wins. At this point I'd prefer Dobnak but competition is healthy - speaking of healthy, it's quite possible Shoemaker doesn't stay healthy all year and Randy will likely be a starter for a good part of the year, regardless.
  2. I consider Thorpe and Smeltzer sunk costs at this point. Hope I'm wrong.
  3. I looked at some of Anderson's highlights. Does anyone else look at this guy and see the body of a starting pitcher? He's 6'4" and 228, and somewhat slow to the plate. Seems very deliberate, kind of a Michael Pineda type. I think the Twins are kinda taking a flyer on a guy with potential to see if our pitching coach can polish him up a bit. I'm thinking if he has a good year, he could be competing for a #4 or #5 starting spot in 2022.
  4. Hard to feel 100% happy with this trade - sure it makes sense, but saying goodbye to Wade is bittersweet. Wishing him success in SF, he'll certainly have a chance there Says a heckuva lot about where the Twins are on Kiriloff. They clearly see him as a full time guy with Cave as the 4th outfielder. Anderson looks like a solid piece with potential. Nice work FO.
  5. Some interesting talk on MLBTradeRumors about the Colome signing. Seems to be a rather heated debate about Colome's expanded stats (FIP, xFIP, K%, GB%, etc). Some seem to think he's been very lucky for his entire career, others say that in this player's case, you can throw those expanded stats out the window. I'm guessing the Twins did their homework and I trust they know what they're doing. Good signing. I frankly don't care how he gets outs. Just so long as he's effective. He has a history of getting the job done, looking forward to watching him in a Twins uniform.
  6. Well, if the Twins weren't going to sign anyone else, then this was the move to make. And they made it. Therefore, it was a good move IMO. Let's see if Nelson has one more awesome year left.
  7. Sources just confirmed Eddie Rosario is nearing a deal with Cleveland. Golldarnit...
  8. So, is Kiriloff competing for a starting job this year right out of ST? With Rosario gone, are the Twins projecting Kiriloff to fill that spot? Or is the team projected to start with a Cave/Wade platoon thingy?
  9. Agreed. If there's one prospect I'm worrying about right now, it's Cavaco. Lot of question marks when this guy was drafted, and zero doubts have been silenced after his poor initial season. He's got a lot of ground to make up. That said, the kid's just 19 still, which is crazy. I think if he's personally the type of guy who is ready to prove people wrong, he could very well jump off the page this year and be back in the top 10 next season. Way to early to consider giving up on this guy, I hope the Twins coaches are focusing on him this upcoming year.
  10. Been wondering about this for a couple days. The headline says the Twins made "Another Move" - where was the first move? Did I miss something? I'm not sure what that was referring to.
  11. Gaver at 8 is ridiculous. Great writeup, agree with everything else you've written. But IMO, Garver's days as a primary backstop are numbered. Also, with Jeffers' emergence, that should automatically make Garver's rank plunge by default.
  12. Certainly fits the definition of a Twins trash-pile special: a pitcher who's not too far removed from a great year, but coming off a rocky season. I certainly don't fault the Twins for giving him a shot, I hope they've uncovered a diamond in the rough.
  13. Garver will certainly rebound - but that's because he couldn't do any worse than he did last year. In fact, if his 1st month is anything like last year's 1st month, he'll be catching in St. Paul. Every Twins fan is pulling for this guy. But realistically I think the best we can expect is a bat worthy of hitting in the 7 or 8 spot. If the guy hits .250 with 18 HR in a full season of ball we should all be thrilled.
  14. Sox are going for it, I'm guessing a lot of pundits out there are going to be predicting the White Sox #1 in the division this year. Especially if the Twins don't sign Cruz.
  15. It's a push, nobody really got anything out of this deal. I suppose if you pressed me, I'd give a slight edge to the Twins but it's pretty insignificant in terms of the team's big picture.
  16. I'm 8+ years sober and I agree with you. I wasn't given a "pass" on the actions I committed while I was an active alcoholic. Sure would have been nice if the credit card companies cancelled my debt on purchases I made on that Vegas trip because I was loaded the whole time. Would have been cool if my girlfriend had come back and said "no worries", or my old job would have said "it's all good, forget about it". But that's not reality. The stuff I did while under the influence still counted against me, and I accept it. Most Americans with 2 DUIs are in a world of sh*t by the way, we're talking losing your driver's license for FIVE YEARS. In my case, I was lucky enough to have a strong support system around me to help me get sober and more importantly stay sober. And I found that inside myself, I knew that stopping drinking was in my best interests long-term. Sounds like Tony is missing some of that from his life. The guy clearly has a drinking problem and needs help, but that doesn't mean he gets a free pass on the actions he's committed while under the influence.
  17. Non-specific stuff: some feel he's weighed in far too often on the Colin Kaepernick stuff, has called him a "fraud", has also said that he would "never allow anyone to take a knee" when the anthem would play, etc. Some people believe that prioritizing the flag over the feelings of minority players is racist. Former players Ron Gant, Royce Clayton, Brian Jordan (among others) have called him a racist. Marcus Stroman obviously feels the same. I don't have specifics, just citing what's been said. Specifically: in 2010, La Russa publicly supported Arizona's odious SB 1070 law, which essentially encouraged racial profiling of Latinos. Ozzie Guillen spoke out against it.
  18. One question I ponder: how fair is it to the history of the game to start robot umpires for today's players? Some random guy went out there and hit .265 in 1982. Another dude hit .216 in 1935. They had bad calls go against them also, as did the hundreds of thousands of other guys. It's not like umpires have just gone downhill all of a sudden - in fact they might be better than ever with the current scrutiny. The main problem I have is do you tarnish the game's history by making this huge change? I suppose the argument could be made in the NFL with the instant replay as well. I think in the end, getting the call right is the most important thing....but in the NFL, you really are only using replay for catches/fumbles, maybe a couple times per game. Even in the MLB's replay system, we're only using it once or twice. The ball/strike thing would be used on every play. I'm not sure we comprehend exactly what would happen here. Would guys hit better? Worse? Way worse? Way better?
  19. True, but don't we also have Aaron Hicks syndrome? The Ortiz trade was awful, but don't forget the most recent fumble. In the case of Hicks, I do understand the trade...the problem is the return. If the Twins are going to trade Sano or anyone else, they've got to get some great talent and start winning some of these trades. They may have won the Escobar and Pressley trades, but the jury's still out.
  20. Any team would have given up on Liam Hendricks, and nobody faults the Twins, Blue Jays or KC for giving up on him when they did. He's had three good years in nine MLB seasons and still owns a career ERA above 4.00.
  21. Agreed - frankly I've passed on them for starters and for bullpen as well. They both seem to be, at best, mop-up guys. No point in keeping guys like this on the roster. Thorpe and Smeltzer aren't Matt Garza types who simply have unharnessed stuff. They don't have the stuff in the first place.
  22. Yep. And I'm not even sure the names you listed are particularly desirable. Yeesh.
  23. The shifts are giving hitters free base hits every time. Someone above mentioned Kepler - they play him to pull, and the 3rd baseman is essentially standing on 2nd base. All Max has to do is just doink one to the left side of the infield and he's on first. Or bunt. Whatever, just put the ball in play over there. Unbelievable that hitters are going up there and seeing the defense against them, and they can't - or worse yet, won't - try and hit the ball to an empty spot. Speaks a lot about the hitting coach.
