  1. Someone had to take the mantle when Mauer retired.
  2. I've never been a huge fan of watching Odo grind through 5 innings on 100 pitches. I guess I don't mind making him the QO, but I'm not that interested in giving him $45-50 million over 3 years. I'd extend the QO and if he declines, take the draft pick and spend the $ on Cole or Mad Baum etc. My preferred address for the rotation is make a deal for Syndergaard, take your best shot at Cole, and then take your best shot at Mad Baum if that fails. That still leaves the #4 spot open, but I'd rather fill that with Pineda for $8 million than Odo for $18.
  3. Get a deal done for Syndergaard (Rosario and the #2 pitching prospect whose name I can never spell). Make a run at Cole. If he balks, Mad Baum is a acceptable alternative.
  4. Assuming you only have a 30% chance to win each game, the odds of losing 16 in a row is 3 in 1,000
  5. I get the frustration, but the notion that the fans being angrier would change anything management does is a stretch. Even in a play-off game, most of the 40,000 there are fairly casual fans who don't live and die with every at bat.
  6. If they don't somehow acquire a starter better than Berrios and a decent #3, Falvine should go elsewhere.
  7. This was foretold when the front office punted on getting help for the rotation. Maybe they were right, I'm not sure it would have mattered. We could have run Mike Minor or Stroman out there tonight and lost 4-2 instead of 8-2. But at least we'd have given ourselves a chance.
  8. The front office told us this wasn't our year when the refused to part with any of their top 15 prospects at the trade deadline. So instead of starting Mike Minor today, it's Randy Dobnak.
  9. I wouldn't do that for a reliever. And isn't his injury the type that is very hard to recover from?
  10. Congrats Twins on a fun season! Bring on the Yankees. Play with house money.
  11. A few Rocco beefs: -What is it going to take to get Eddie "weak foul to 3rd" Rosario out of the clean-up spot? -How do you not PH Cron for Castro in the bottom of the 5th. You have a chance to put the game out of reach and Castro's hitting .100 over the last month. You had already inserted Astudillo to play 1st, he can just move to catcher. No-brainer. -Hildenberger, Gibson and Stewart cannot pitch for this team again in 2019.
  12. No way. $8 million is what we paid him on his current contract to be the starter. The gap between him and Astudillo isn't big. And Astudillo will work for minimum salary. That $8 million is best used elsewhere. Stash a "Magic Fingers" Bobby Wilson type in AAA to be safe. (But not actual Bobby Wilson please.)
  13. I don't think it was the case tonight, but we should have gone for the boot on the throat on Sunday and we didn't. Now it will probably take us until the final week-end to clinch. I see Cleveland losing 2 more games at most.
  14. I've wondered this too. Against Houston, it probably doesn't matter as they have 3 aces. But against the Yankees, do you throw Smeltzer out there in game 1, hope for a miracle and know that you now have the advantage in games 2 and 3? This almost worked unintentionally for the Twins in 2009 as they had to start Duensing in game 1 due to game 163. Unfortunately, Nathan blew the save in game 2 and Phil Cuzzi game through for the Yankees in the 10th.
  15. I agree with this, except insert Cron for Cave and move Gonzalez to RF. If staying with this 9, I'd swap Rosario and Garver to avoid having back-to-back lefies.
  16. That feels like forfeiting. I don't understand pushing Berrios back. If you start him today and Friday, you set up him to pitch Wed or Thursday before the end of the season which lines him up for game 1. If you stick with giving him 5 days rest, you pitch him tomorrow and next Sunday. That puts him in line to pitch the 2nd to last game of the season. You don't want that. And the alternative is he's on like 10 days rest.
  17. Give 1500 Skor North a listen. They have been the opposite. Breaks cut, all is well talk. Almost to the point of irritation.
