  1. And Mays makes 8. Don't forget about Mays. I think Mays should swap with Nolasco. Mays has earned a spot in the rotation. Let Nolasco prove that he can handle some multi inning relief appearances before letting him start again.
  2. Excellent post! Even though I didn't quote the whole thing (I just wanted enough to spark readers minds), I agree every word - except the part about Jason Tyner. Nobody should have to remember the Tyner. Ever.
  3. I keep running into discussions about this and there is apparently people out there that think this is actually a good idea. Could one of those people please explain to me how this would be any different than giving Nolasco a raise and an extension? No! No no no no no no no no no no noooooooo!! A thousand times no!
  4. Once a team has one of its players picked, do they get to protect additional players or is that only in expansion?
  5. The real thanks goes everybody at Twins Daily for consistently putting up interesting and thought provoking sports writing day after day. It's not easy and I really do appreciate it. I don't post much, but that's because I'm usually sneaking on at work while the boss is out of the room. I read just about everything and will often times double back to older articles to see if there are any new posts in the comments sections. If they ever put a security camera in the room where it can get a clear shot of my screen, I'm toast. Thanks again everybody!
  6. Great ariticle! I was especially intrigued by the part about the team having two cores. I don't know how much to read into it, but it's sure going to be a fun 8-10 years watching that core slowly become the old core.
  7. But those injuries always seem to happen every year and a few of those younger arms always seem to get their chance. The players that are closest to being ready will all get their chance, it's just a matter of when they come up and how long they stay for.
  8. He's guaranteed that money no matter what happens. By the end of this deal, Mauer will be past his prime. Most of players would look at a deal like Mauer's as nearly all of the money they will ever make as a baseball player. There is just no way any player walks away or renegotiates a retirement.
  9. Santana in CF and Sano in RF sounds icky. And it means you have to sign another OF capable of playing CF. Shane Robinson, anyone.
  10. I completely agree with that. The best relievers aren't drafted or bought, they're converted from the current starter corp. I would definitely try Nolasco in the pen. Maybe they still can get at least a little bit of return on his contract.
  11. Acquiring an ace in the off season with the idea of making it to the post season is like buying lottery tickets thinking it's going to make you rich. The most likely scenario for both is you're going to spend a lot of money and end up disappointed. I like the way the staff is coming along. I also think it's going to get better with experience, an improving defense and a better bullpen. And let's not forget some of the arms in the pipeline ready to make a splash. If the team finds itself in the thick of things and seems like it's postseason bound an ace makes much more sense. There will undoubtedly be plenty of teams looking to dump salary and a trade should be much more feasible without giving away the house. Can we go back to worrying about catcher and the bullpen, please?
  12. I could never understand why the front office drafts relievers when all the team's successful bullpen guys have been converted starters. There must be some starters they have their doubts about that they could try out in the pen. Just a few? Nolasco is the one who can't seem to put up innings. Put him in the bullpen and see if we can get at least a little value from him. Maybe he can get a bit more velocity AND make it through a whole season without getting hurt. That's a lot of money to pay for a bullpen arm, but it's even more to pay for a starter who can't get batters out. On that note, I wouldn't mind them resigning Pelfry if I knew for certain they were going to put him in the bullpen and keep him there. It seems like he looks pretty decent until the second or third time through the order. A bullpen gig might start looking pretty good in February if he still hasn't signed with anybody.
  13. They won't have to go 27-13. They are only 2 1/2 games behind the Angels and play a three game series with them at Target field. All they have to do is kick the crap out of the Angels at Target Field and play decent ball in the others.
  14. Why not start promoting some of that surplus to the bullpen? It can use all the help it can get. I would even be okay with the team resigning Pelfry if I knew with 100% certainty that he would be a permanent bullpen guy.
  15. I like O'Day better than Wieters, but would be open to either or both. I wouldn't give up Arcia, especially not now when his value is so low. As fans I think we tend to value picks a lot more than most MLB teams, so I don't think it would take nearly as much to get them as we might think. A few mid-level prospects close to the majors might be all it takes.
  16. There is nothing ridiculous about it. They gave the guy every chance to succeed. They traded Span and then Revere to make room for him. I think Hicks will be back at some point, but not anytime soon. Buxton is the Twins guy now. I think Buxton makes his debut before Hicks gets another chance.
  17. Buxton is tearing it up at Chattanooga. I don't think he is going to be a minor league player for very much longer. Forget projections, his glove and his speed is elite and major league right now. Even if he comes up and stinks with the bat, because of the rest of his tools, I can't imagine him not being an improvement over what we have in center field right now. All winter I've been listening to posters complain about the team not investing in a center fielder. More and more I'm becoming convinced the team has believed they had one all along. I'm really loving the way the team is starting to come together and a Buxton promotion would be the icing on the cake.
  18. I was at work, so I had the game reduced and was listening more than watching, but my impression is that he was working things. I can't really point to anything specific about the pitches he was throwing or anything like that. All I can say is that it "felt" like he was throwing a bullpen more than a pitcher actively trying to prevent runs.
  19. I don't believe I'm the only one who's never seen the guy play, but people who have say he does just fine at third. I say put him on a diet if you need to, but let the kid play third until his performance demands it and/or a position opens up elsewhere. It's not like a potential championship is on the line or anything. The thought of Sano, Arcia and Vargas hitting back to back to back with Buxton, Santana and Rosario all in there somewhere is making me drool all over my keyboard.
  20. There are a lot of questions, but for me the number one thing is Hicks. Can he get it together enough to stay in CF? A productive Hicks would help solve a number of the teams problems, not just offensively, but in the field and on the mound too. It would also mean Santana stays at short. I wonder how much he would have to improve to stay at the position? I don't mean what he should do, but what would be the minimum he would have do to get a passing grade and stay with the team.
  21. I think it's Hicks' position to lose. At worst, it will probably be a Hicks/Schaeffer platoon. I'm hoping Hicks' second half stats weren't a fluke and that he really has figured it out. With Hunter joining Arcia in the corner spots, the team needs decent center field fielding more than ever.
  22. They all can't win more games. The wins have to come at somebody's expense. If all the teams in the central are better, it just means they will all beat up on each other and finish about the same. In spite of everything that people feel needs to be done, for me, the number one thing I will be watching is Hicks' bat. Will he hit well enough to stay in the line up everyday? He really showed signs of finally figuring it out toward the end of the season last year, so it's definitely possible. Beyond what that would mean offensively, a outfield defense with Hicks seemed much more capable than what they ran out there when he was sent down. Just that one thing alone could have such a positive affect on so much of what ailed the team last year.
  23. Every one of them, dates that will live on in Twins infamy and, until the day I die, I will always remember where I was and what I was doing when each of them broke ... ... I was on my computer at work, blowing off my projects and ready to reduce at a second's notice if the boss walked by.
  24. I was hoping this would happen! I'm one happy Twins fan today. I'm happy for Hughes because he deserves every penny and happy for me as fan because of what he brought to the rotation and will now continue to bring for an extra few years.
  25. I'm wondering if the Twins front office are thinking the same thing. Is it possible that Ryan & Co. think the team can contend this year?
