  1. Well, we shouldn't assume the Pohlad's would eat money if they didn't have to so this isn't a big surprise. Villalobos seems like depth which is nice but the loss of the pick (and the pool money) will hurt us a bit in the draft.
  2. Q: Why isn't Garver playing more? A: Molitor is a bad manager.
  3. Gordon with another home run. The fangraphs writer noted that Gordon was working on his swing to get more out of his raw power into games. So far, so good.
  4. Yep, it was a good deal. Twins were paying him #3 money (and less AAV than Nolasco). His shoulder broke. Good luck to him in the future.
  5. Yep, I was hoping for a Cuddyer like player out of him and it looks like he might be able to pull that off. Still would like to see a few more walks but he should be promoted this season. Barring injury, I'd expect he'll be a unanimous top 100 guy next season.
  6. I think Lewis has to be close to a promotion. I'd imagine that the Twins wait for the all-star break but I think they could do it now. I wouldn't skip A+ though. We saw the jump from A+ to AA is rough (look at Rooker), I can't see a A to AA jump.
  7. Was Buxton's bunt ruled a hit or an error? I saw the play on mlbtv this morning and I couldn't believe how fast he got to first on a bunt more or less straight back to the pitcher.
  8. I hadn't been following him much but I picked Bechtold to be a sleeper break out guy this year and, oof, he's really struggling in A ball - .198/.280/.240. I didn't not expect that at all. I'd like to see Kiriloff fix his k/bb rates a bit but he is really stinging the ball. Maybe he'll have to move up before address those issues.
  9. Good road trip. Splitting four games with the Angels is pretty good, especially with all the injuries the team has right now. They could easily have won yesterday. I'm getting sick of these rough losses (6 walk offs already?).
  10. Yeah. About a decade or so ago the Twins managed to get a bunch of decent seasons out of guys like Blackburn (two 2 WAR seasons), Slowey (one), Baker (three) types. Not great pitchers but they knew how to pitch with the stuff they had. I'm starting to think Littell could have that kind of impact. Solid back of the rotation type who might pitch above his stuff a bit.
  11. In his first 19 games (72 PA), he didn't walk once and struck out 33% of the time. In his last ten games, his walk rate has been 13% and his k-rate is 25% in 44 PA. It's just too early to worry. He's making adjustments but we won't see those in his overall line for a bit. It'll take time but he's on progress. It wasn't realistic to expect him to light up AA pitching as soon as he saw it. What's important is if he can make the adjustments.
  12. I think it's too early to get concerned. He was a late 1st/early 2nd draft guy for a reason. He's in AA. It might take him the entire season to get there. The SEC is not as good as AA.
  13. I hope they push him but it's probably more realistic to let him just get back into the grove of baseball and not worry. He needs to work on his strike outs and walks anyway.
  14. Good point. He's not Buerhle but he has a great pace. Makes it easier for his defenders and viewers.
  15. I think it's cyclical although our emphasis on "launch angle" might end up just being an excuse for much more PED use than thought in the league. My guess is that as hitters see the one dimensional slugger type becoming easy to replace, hitters will strive to improve their hitting tool and not just power. We've made tons of improvements on power but we really haven't seen a 'hit' break-out yet.
  16. Great article. Do you (or anyone) have any information about how well he's actually throwing strikes in the zone and how much hitters are chasing pitches out of the zone?
  17. Great update, Seth! Nice to see the top five. Hopefully guys like Rooker and Baddoo make the (small) adjustments needed to take off. Graterol is really exciting. I think Mayo said he had a Luis Sevirino comp on him.
  18. Agreed. Obviously, it depends on how he finishes the year but I would imagine he'd be back either on a new deal or (less likely) the Twins could still just take his option.
  19. I'm not as convinced as you are that Trevor May belongs in this discussion but the Twins actually have control of him through the 2020 season, so two more years after this one.
  20. He doesn't really remind me of anyone we've had but the way hitters have flailed at stuff out of the zone, it's sorta like Liriano, back in his day. What was really nice to watch was how he doesn't (for now) need to throw actual strikes b/c hitters are confused and swinging at balls. With scouting reports we might need to see adjustments but, for now, this is a lot of fun to watch.
  21. Oh yeah, me too. I'd love it if he managed to make me eat crow and become a ML pitcher for us. I'm rooting for him.
  22. Obviously, Gonsalves is the story. He certainly seems to have taken the AA assignment as a challenge. Nice to see him pitching so well against AAA competition. I'd imagine he'll be the next one up.
  23. This came up when the Twins drafted him. The assumption was that he could serve his two years of service in the reserves and still pitch full time for the Twins. It was a risk since those rules could be - and were - changed. So the Twins thought they'd have Jax around a lot more when the drafted him. If he could have played with the Twins, he was a solid 3rd round pick. But because he's missed so much time, it's really hurt him. http://www.thegazette.com/subject/sports/professional/cedar-rapids-kernels/griffin-jax-heads-to-air-force-after-fine-pitching-performance-in-cr-kernels-12-4-win-over-lansing-20170722 Sure, there are no sure things in the drafts but it's always better to bet on players who are actually playing baseball, like Lewis. Right now, Jax hasn't played much. When he has, he hasn't actually been all that dominant (I made the comparison to Stewart for a reason - Stewart is getting raked over the coals for his low K-totals in AA, Jax has worse K totals in low A). He's old for a prospect. Sure, there are old players who figured it out but it's not a thing you want to rely on. Lastly, this is a minor league baseball forum. We're talking about players in our system. Occasionally, we get feel-good stories here, especially from Seth. But generally this is about talking about these guys as prospects. There are a lot of really good guys in the minors who won't make it and only occasionally is that mentioned. I don't think you should expect people to not say what they think about Jax the prospect just b/c you might be overly sensitive to it. Saying a guy with his profile isn't really a prospect anymore isn't that controversial.
