  1. I wonder how much of Cruz being on team has helped Sano. It may not have done a thing, but Sano's change in swing seems to fit much of what Cruz has done. I am sure Sano was told for years to do what he is doing now, look to hit ball to right center and adjust to offspeed. But sometimes it takes someone else to tell you the same thing for it to sink in. If Cruz has impacted Sano at all, he is worth way more than Twins are paying him, because when healthy Cruz has raked all year. Hope he keeps it up and comes back next year doing same thing.
  2. One of the best way to fix throwing errors by infielders is to get a better fielding first baseman. Sure having better throws will help, but if you can get a good fielding first baseman that scoops throws in dirt or can come off bag and still get out that reduces those. Many people think you can but anyone over at first and all they have to do is catch the ball, but a good defender can save so many errors. So many throws from Sano or Polonco that have been errors, at least ones I have seen, could have been scooped and were not. I feel also, that when you know you need to make the throw dead on target for your guy to catch it makes it more likely you screw it up. I have, and always will be, a fan of good fielding first basemen over offensive ones. Sure both are best, but that is at every position.
  3. I personally do not care the walk percentage for Kiriloff, as long as the walk to strikeout rate does not get much worse, right now it is about same as Lewis at a 3 to 1 ratio K to BB. When players do not walk a lot I always look at how often they strike out, and if the ratio is very high that most likely means they are chasing and missing a lot of pitches. If both percentages are down then it just means they put a lot of balls in play.
  4. I have been down on Cron all second half. I hope for his sake it is just the thumb injury, but his defense is not good and he is not hitting right hand pitching. The issue is with Buxton hurt and Tortuga out there are not a lot of options. Either Cave, Schoop, or Adrianza need to play if Cron does not. Schoop is worse than Cron, and Cave for most part is worse too, so that leaves Adrianza. Once Buxton comes back, Gonzales can play infield more again, and once Tortuga gets back he can play first or catch and let Garver play more in field. I think coaching staff knows the issue, but right now not a lot of solutions.
  5. Sano has been crushing lately. I have been way down on him over the years, but he is showing he is putting in the work. The hardest thing for some players is to change what has worked their whole lives, even harder when it does not work right away. I think he is finally learning he does not need to pull everything, he can put the ball out to any field. I hope his next step is to plan out the at bat, and not just react. So many times in the past, not so much recently, he would go up there and try to pull outside sliders and just miss or weak contact. If he would go up and look for that pitch, step into it, he could smoke that thing off of or over the RF over and over. If we play in NY during playoffs, I hope he thinks about fact a pop up to RF is a home run in NY.
  6. If you asked Buxton to pull up and not play at 11, as you say, then you do not have Buxton, you have someone lessor. Sure, that still may be better than not having him at all. I agree, he should get with someone like Hunter to learn how to dive and jump into wall better, but asking him to tone it down will lower his value, the question will be how much lower and is it worth the trade off of having him on field more.
  7. I have been hoping they call someone else up every time. Cave rakes at AAA, then does nothing up at MLB. Plus, he does keep having terrible fielding plays. He did make nice catch to seal game other day, but his play last night was terrible. I am not sure if he is considered better on defense than Cave, but I would like to see more of Wade.
  8. I hope many of these guys will become legit MLB guys, not too many on prospect lists, or not that high at least. Let's hope our system is set up like Cleveland and we keep pumping out top arms, you cannot have too much pitching.
  9. Yup, Keith Law walks around with a ruler, if you under 6'2" you are not a top pitching prospect and cannot make it in the majors. Maybe someone should show him video of Pedro Martinez, and may others. I never pay attention to Keith Law's lists because he pays way too much attention to height, something that really is not all that important in baseball.
  10. What I like best about Smeltzer is his willingness to do what is asked of him and to adjust. When Twins acquired him he stated he wanted to start, and Twins told him what he needed to make it happen. He worked his butt off and it is paying off. Some feel entitled to positions, or will not listen to the adjustments needed to succeed, he is not one of them. Kid is clearly a fighter, I will take a fighter over someone who profiles as a top guy. Here is to hoping his first few starts are not just smoke and mirrors but he can keep it up.
  11. Nice to see Gordon hitting well in AAA. For everyone that keeps dropping him down the prospect lists, it is interesting if you look at his career. He has moved up the levels slow and steady, similar to Aaron Hicks, not comparing in any other fashion than both had slow learning curve per level. Not sure what Gordon's defense has been looking like, but offense wise he will be demanding a MLB spot next year. The question is with what team. Twins have SS and 2nd pretty locked up next year, barring injury, with Polonco and Aarriz. 3rd is possibly open, depending on what they do with Sano and 1st base. I bet Gordon gets dealt during off season now that he is looking MLB ready. If his defense at SS is holding well, he should draw some good attention from rebuilding teams with controlled starting pitching that are not ready to compete.
  12. I think this is in party why he has not been extended. His defense has been trending downward, the eyes can tell that, and his bat has been good overall, but not game changing to level you overlook poor defense. I like the improvement he has made at the plate, and he loves the big moment to do big things, but he is starting to go by way of man ram, not that bad yet, but he clearly is not taking it as serious as his hitting.
  13. I expect some trades, not sure if anything major though. If the asking price for any major players is Lewis and/or Kiraloff, as reported both Toronto and Mets were asking for both and Mets wanted Buxton too. That is way to high of asking price in my opinion. Many people were upset we did not get Stroman for what Mets did, but reports were Toronto was not dealing him to us for same level of prospects they did for Mets. We will never know what other teams are asking for from Twins. We assume some of the starters available are upgrades, but you never know if they will be or not. I would love to see a big time bullpen guy and top end starter, but who knows what will be asked for them.
  14. I disagree with the Escobar take, we do not know if he would have resigned, he could have signed with Twins, and we do not know if he would have been better than Gonzalez, presuming he would have been the one not with Twins if Escobar was. Sure, Escobar putting up good numbers, and I always liked him, but he is hitting in AZ a hitters park. Additionally, having vets that have made playoffs is always helpful, in my opinion. In terms of Pressely, I agree he is doing well in Houston, but would he have performed as well with Twins? We do not know how pitchers will do with other teams based on what coaches are telling them, or role they are being used in. Also, most felt the window was mainly next year and this was still a bridge year with an off chance, but the additions, for the most part, have been huge for Twins and both Buxton and Sano have started to show the star status we needed. If we could go back and not make the trade, for sure I would not make it, but did not feel it was terrible at the time.
  15. I do not understand when people talk about height for prospects. Sure, some players that are taller use that to their advantage, but if a guy can pitch, or hit who cares how tall they are. Scouts had same concerns for Jose Berrios, he seems to be doing well.
  16. This is the classic deadline chicken game. This year will be interesting because only one trade deadline. Who will blink first. Toronto sure did. Many people were upset the Twins did not make similar offer, but sounds like Toronto was not dealing with Twins for that little. Wonder why they caved to Mets? Mets do not have to sell Thor now so they should ask for a lot, but trading buxton would be giving up on season, look at record when he does not play vs when he does. The issue is unless you going after rentals, teams can hold onto controllable pitchers and trade in off season, but the rentals they will lose for nothing so teams will more likely take less for them. I would be willing to give up some of top prospects for a good controllable pitcher, but Mets' asking price is way too high, but does not hurt to ask. However, I doubt any team will come close to giving up current MLB talent for him now. It would take other trades to fix the hole you create by trading away current players, unless that team has player waiting to jump in. Tomorrow will get interesting when all the teams looking to actually sell are up against the deadline. In my opinion trade deadline should always be a buyers market, at least the rental player market. First year under new rules. Let the fun begin.
  17. First, why are people so down on Pinada? Look at what he has been doing lately, he should be considered our third started not our fifth. Do I want him pitching in Yankee stadium in playoffs, maybe not compared to some others, but he is improving. Over his last 7 games he has pitched 39.2 innings, walked 5 struck out 37, gave up 13 earned. That is a good 7 games. You say 7 is not long enough, he has only pitch 18 games so still a decent chunk of his season. Time to give the guy a break. That being said, I would love to see a top end starter added and at least one more top pen arm. I am all for trading away prospects to do it. Why do we always say we cannot trade prospects? Because we fear the unknown of what they may become, but they may also become nothing worth much either. If you can increase chances in playoffs trade the prospects, just don't sell the whole farm. We have plenty of middle infield depth and plenty of outfield depth, sure some will draw interest.
  18. Wander Javier is having a terrible season. I know he is coming off of injury and all that, but no way should he be considered top 10 prospect anymore. He is getting on base 25% of the time and striking out over 33% of the time. average of .156 just terrible. I hope he has better rest of year or come back next year, but he is not maturing way we would like.
  19. This game was exact thing I was worried about. Twins have had a few bad games they should have and easily could have won if they did not make so many mistakes. Sure game may have played out different, but we gave them both runs in the first inning on bad defense. The wild pitches and passed balls moved runners up, the bad throw from Kepler, a good throw may have got runner and no one scores, finally no play from Schoop. Mets made good plays throughout the game and we lose by 1 with bases loaded. These are tough games to watch when you are trying to make playoffs.
  20. These are games the Twins need to play well. If we lose not a big deal, but if we play poorly that could be an issue heading into tougher competition later in home stand.
  21. It is interesting to hear little tid bits about pitchers like Littel and Smeltzer having betters years under the new system the Twins have in place. I am wondering how much it will be similar to what Cleveland had when Falvey was there. May reports were Falvey had a lot to do with the pitching system they had in place. They managed to find many diamonds in the rough over the years. Here is to hoping Twins can do the same. There has been some good early results. It will also be interesting to see how many OF get traded. I know many talking Kiroloff is off limits, but why? He may be good hitter but he is not only one that can hit, and if we can get good starter controled through next year for him I say jump at it.
  22. To all the people thinking you can trade free agents to be for Thor you are all kidding yourselves. I could see possible of Sano in a deal, and Twins could do it and survive the season as he is not carrying the team at all, he is also still under control for a few years so Mets may think about him, but free agents to be for a non-contending team would only do it for money purposes. No way do Mets take on free agents to be in a thought it will make them more likely to sign them.
  23. I like the idea of the Mets trade, but do not expect Catro in the deal. For two reasons, Mets would not want a guy at end of deal, they could sign him in offseason if they want, and Twins will be down to 1 catcher until the turtle comes back, which no time table is set.
  24. If you can throw in Smith and we add one more mid to low level prospect I am all in. Think it is a bit of steep for a rental player that may more so be on name you are paying for. I am a fan of getting mad bum though because he is prove playoff tested, but he has some attitude issues that may not mesh well with the team, and bad attitudes can blow up teams.
  25. A few reasons no trades get done early. Many teams still trying to fight for playoff spot, but more of a reason is teams that will be selling want to wait so fans will still show up, but once you tell fans, hey we selling all our talent come watch some minor league baseball they will lose out on some ticket sales, and tv ratings. Also, buying teams will want to wait to see where they are at, and who are they competing with buying wise. Some people think buy early and you don't have to bid against others, but on other hand the later you wait the more you know who else is buying. So for example, right now several teams may be looking or at very least selling teams may be getting feelers, but as buyers dry up and turn into sellers the market opens up to be a buyers market. Also, if you have say 5 top 100 prospects and the other buying teams have 1 you may not have to give up as much to still out bid the other buying teams. The selling teams can hold out for now too, but as deadline comes closer they will start to see they may not get anything for pending FA and so they will sell for even less than they would right now. Not saying Twins should not make a deal sooner than later, just saying what is going on in GM heads.
