  1. AL ASG manager is benching Trout* and starting Buxton in CF for Tuesdays AS Game. *Trout so embarrassed he's skipping game due to "injury" Yeah sure.
  2. Two cows were standing in a pasture, contentedly discussing world events. "Say," said one, "have you heard about the mad cow disease making the rounds?" "Yeah," said the other. "Scary stuff. Makes me glad I'm a penguin."
  3. Det-Cle postponed. Lead at ASG break 2 or 3. I vote for 3.
  4. Rocco was just on the radio pregame and said they'd be going with 4 starters until "early August." He wouldn't commit to which 4 though.
  5. I disagree with much of the premise of this article. There really aren't low leverage guys in a bullpen. Everyone is going to pitch in close games. That's the nature of baseball, a low scoring game, and the long term trend of fewer and fewer innings provided by starters. The problem isn't which inning a weak reliever gives up runs. The problem is too many weak relievers. Adding a good arm surely helps, but it won't mean Cotton won't have a chance to pitch in a 1 run game. And regularly giving up too many baserunners hurts in the 6th as well as the 8th.
  6. None of them so far have thrown enough to not be available tomorrow, I'd guess. FWIW, I wouldn't haven't left Smeltzer in either.
  7. Concur. He'll get a nice deal, but I don't see a megacontract as very likely.
  8. Let's save our insults for the White Sox and not other posters. One and only warning.
  9. Just when you think it's safe to open your eyes with Pagan on the mound...
  10. We've had this discussion. Including the idea that if an IL stint would help, they'd likely have done so.
  11. A bit of a nitpick...but no. They havent. Since reaching 27-16, the Twins haven't again been 11 games over .500. They've been back to 10 games over four times, including as recently as July 5th before the most recent 2-5. But they haven't matched that high water mark of 11 game over. So they actually didn't "play at .500 ball for the previous 40 games or so."
  12. Well no, they're not going to have five aces. But that's not the point...they need the starters they have to pitch better than they have the past couple weeks. A long reliever does nothing to fix that. Last night they used Megill, Smith, Cotton and Gordon. Inconsequential. I'd rather not tie up a pen spot on a guy who's only job is to pitch when it doesn't matter. At the very least, as a I said, it's way low on my priority list. Does anyone carry a dedicated "long guy" any more?
  13. *27-16. Ups and downs, sure, but I don't think any of the Yankees, Dodgers, Astros, or Mets have had "long stretches of .500 ball." I agree they need reinforcements, but a "long reliever" is about last on my needs list. Someone to "soak up innings" when they're down 6-1 in the 4th doesn't make any difference. What they need are pitchers who prevent that in the first place and a bullpen that protects leads when they do.
