  1. Mostly true, based more on age. Could have an older H.S. kid that only gets four years, I guess. Players are eligible for selection in the Rule 5 draft who are not on their major league organization's 40-man roster and: – were 18 or younger on the June 5 preceding their signing and this is the fifth Rule 5 draft upcoming; or – were 19 or older on the June 5 preceding their signing and this is fourth Rule 5 draft upcoming.
  2. Depending on how their seasons go this year, this 2012 class could add a ton of guys to the 40-man roster in November, if not before. Could see Chargois, Z Jones, Duffey, Rogers, Melotakis and ABW all being protected. Buxton would obviously need to be added if he gets the big league call this year. Then add in wildcards like Engelb Vielma (I-FA) and Travis Harrison ('11 class) - wow. Granted, not all will have production in '15 resulting in a Rule 5 risk, but a number of them will for sure. Wonder if you could slide a guy like Melotakis through without adding to the 40-man after his lost season to TJ?
  3. We can carry Suzuki's .250 career average if we don't see a huge dip in Vargas' or Santana's production from last year. If all three of those guys tail off we'll need monster years from both Mauer and Arcia just to maintain last years pace.
  4. I have a feeling that Milone could be the sticky wicket out of these six. Like Seth said, career numbers vs recent performance. Milone's camp will say " Look what we did the past three years: a sub 4.00 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP". Twins will counter with "You struggled down the stretch last season. And we don't really want to pay a $3 million salary for someone that may end up in the bullpen". Should be interesting. By the way, between Milone, Pelfrey and Duensing, the Twins could be paying around $11 million for three middle relievers this season. Seems a little pricey.
  5. Agree with this. Wrist injuries have to be about the worst thing for a hitter.
  6. Just in the AL Central alone there's a ton of left-handed hitters where a good LOOGY would come in handy. Guys like Michael Brantley, Adam LaRoche and Alex Gordon just to name a few. And unlike the minor leagues, they are most likely not going to be pinch-hit for. Upwards of 80 games against Chicago, Cleveland, KC and Detroit will cry out for a solid situational lefty reliever on many critical occasions. Hopefully, O'Rourke starts out strong and gets his shot with the big club.
  7. If you check out the various publications that put out top 100 prospect lists over the next couple months (Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, MLBPipeline,etc...) I bet every single one still has Buxton in the top 3 along with Carlos Correa and Kris Bryant. Doubt he would be placed that high if his "hit" tool was considered suspect.
  8. Fair enough. Hard to make any judgements on kids right out of high school.
  9. Safe to say that Vielma is the best defensive SS prospect in the organization? I would guess that Nick Gordon & Jorge Polanco generally get their higher ranking due to their bat more so than the glove.
  10. I think Alex Wimmers is a possibility if you include him in the 'others' category. Maybe only a 5-10 percent chance, but he did quietly have a decent season out of the 'pen last year for New Britain. Obviously, the key for Wimmers is to stay healthy. He would need to be added to the 40-man. At least one of the following trio of pitchers will be re-called and and have a bigger impact than anyone anticipates: Taylor Rogers, Tyler Duffey, Jason Wheeler. Burdi and Sano will have the best performance of all those called up for their debut this year.
  11. Be interested to see what the traffic is like once rumors start of some of the top prospects being promoted to the big club. Sano, Meyer, Berrios, Burdi, Buxton. Twins Daily could be a hopping place this upcoming season as we pour over every minor league update that Seth provides.
  12. I remember the trade deadline thread the most. Couldn't even keep up with the posts, they were coming in so fast and furious. Lots of trades around the league. Fun times!
  13. If Sano is a Hall-Of-Famer someday and his autographed merchandise is worth some decent coin, do his varying signatures hurt the value? I mean, anybody could scribble something down and say it's Sano's. How would anybody know?
  14. Do non-arbitration eligible players have any type of negotiations with the club at all? Or do they pretty much have to accept what the club offers?
  15. How does Hicks-y make 2G's less in year 3 than Santana or Vargas in year 2?
  16. I guess I wouldn't consider an extension for Dozier until we see what kind of year Jorge Polanco has in '15. If he has a breakout season he may be the long term future at 2B instead of Dozier. Would be easier to move Dozier a year or two from now without a 4 or 5 year deal tied to him. Of course, the other option is to trade Polanco and extract value that way. Feels like Jorge's position is 2B and not SS. In any event, I would wait another season before talks with Dozier.
  17. How bad was the 2003 draft, where the 4th overall pick can't even make the BA top 100 in his first year?
  18. Actually, the future pieces of the Twins' bullpen are sitting in A and AA ball. Their names? Nick Burdi, Zack Jones and Jake Reed. All three can bring the heat in the mid to upper 90's. They aren't as far away from the big leagues as you might think.
  19. Harrison is one of the guys I'll be watching closely. Sure hope his power comes back because that is his ticket to the big leagues. Only an average OF defender (albeit with a strong arm) and probably not ever going to be a high average hitter. Let's keep the gap power and ramp up the over-the-wall power!
  20. I guess I disagree, Seth. Stiffness in your joints (i.e. Sano's elbow) has to be a concern in colder weather. There is a significant difference in avg temps for mid-April between Chattanooga and Rochester NY, Something like 72 degrees vs 57 degrees. Don't know how many night games the Red Wings play in April but it can routinely drop to around 40, or low 40's. But, whatever the reason, I expect him to start at Chattanooga and hopefully do well.
  21. As for Sano, probably a little warmer weather early on in Chattanooga than in Rochester. Coming off a bum elbow it's probably best to keep it warm so it doesn't stiffen up.
  22. Thorpe will miss all of 2015 after spraining his UCL? Hadn't heard that before. That would not be good.
  23. Chattanooga should be loaded this year. In addition to the four players mentioned by Nick we could see Kepler, Harrison, AB Walker, Polanco, Rogers, Wheeler, Duffey, Burdi and Turner all with the Lookouts. In my opinion, they should be odds on favorite to win the North Division of the Southern League, at least the 1st half. 2nd half? Well, that depends on how many of the players advance via promotions.
  24. Good point that you made here about why some of the Twins' better prospects were the first to be sent across the street to the minor league complex. Always wondered why guys like Brandon Waring, Dan Rohlfing and Doug Bernier hung around to the last days of spring training when they had little chance of making the trip north, Using this knowledge, I guess we can expect guys like Miguel Sano, Jason Wheeler and Eddie Rosario to get their looks early in the spring (1st couple weeks) and then be sent down. Byron Buxton may actually hang around longer than those guys because there is less risk.
