  1. I think the Twins will be without Sano for a decent amount of time for either health reasons, suspension or both. This means the Twins will be power challenged with only Dozier providing RH pop on a consistent basis in the lineup. So adding a right-handed power bat is a must, in my opinion. I would pick up a 1B/DH type with Granite backing up all three of the outfield positions. Vargas pretty much flails uncontrollably from the right side so I don't view him as an option at 1B/DH anymore. That ship has sailed. Grossman gives you some OBP but not much power; or defense (see Granite above). I'd move on. My choice for a bounce back candidate would Matt Holliday. I think he has another .800+ OPS and 25 HR season left in him after a bit of a down year in '17. Can spell Mauer at 1B and also DH against lefties. Second choice would be Mark Reynolds. Strikes out a ton but also hits a ton of taters. Bottom line: I give up some power from the left side (Vargas) and OBP (Grossman) for power from the right side and defense in the OF (Granite).
  2. For Chris: From your experience in watching young ballplayers, what is the toughest transition they need to make during the jump from A-ball to AA? For both hitters and pitchers?
  3. For Lewis: What level of minor league ball would you most compare the Aussie League to? Rookie League, A ball, Advanced A?
  4. For Zack: His thoughts on playing in a playoff game in Yankee Stadium after growing up nearby in Staten Island and attending games in the Bronx as a kid?
  5. For Zack: Tougher catch at the wall (in his mind)...the one where he robbed Manny Machado of an extra base hit at Target Field or the home run saving catch off the bat of Will Myers of the Padres?
  6. I'll add one more...#6. What to do with Phil Hughes if HEALTHY. Don't think he should be considered for the rotation if the Twins fancy themselves as contenders. Also don't think he's a solid fit for the pen either at the expense of others with more swing and miss capability. Tough one to figure out, but Twins better have a plan.
  7. MLB can tinker around the edges with pitch clocks, mound visits, extra inning changes, etc... but until there aren't a combined 12 pitching changes per game nothing will happen with pace of play. In the 60's into the 80's when guys like Tom Seaver, Nolan Ryan, Bert Byleven and Steve Carlton routinely pitched complete games the times were a hair over 2 hours. Not saying there is an easy fix. It's just the way the game has evolved over the years.
  8. Me thinks somebody needs to check Eddie's birth certificate. Might be 36 and not 26.
  9. For Alex Kirilloff - ask him about his reported 30 lb weight gain over the offseason. Looking for a little added power or just trying to stay stronger throughout the season.
  10. Tough call between Gonsalves and Romero as far as asset value. Think I'd lean Romero though If Gonsalves' ceiling is a #3 or #4 starter, well... I guess another club could go to the free agent market and get that for a reasonable amount of money. Top end of the rotation guys are harder to find, even if Romero is not a sure thing.
  11. One of my favorite Twins prospects. Sounds like he possesses great leadership qualities which is important for a catcher. Will be following him closely this summer as he continues his development. Thanks for the article, Tom.
  12. Not sure my ticker could handle Fernando Rodney for a full 162 game schedule.
  13. Archer and Cole make for solid trade targets. Danny Duffy too, if the Royals would make him available. As for the aforementioned rumor, surprised the Bucs wouldn't have asked for Alex Kirilloff, a Pittsburgh area native, instead of Granite, Would be three Twins #1 draft picks in a row- Gordon ('14), Jay ('15), Kirilloff ('16) - in one trade!. Pirates probably want Granite for OF depth in case they move 'Cutch.
  14. Darvish and Arrieta scare me some. Those 5 and 6 year contracts have a way of biting you big time on the back end. Would rather spend prospect currency on cost-controllable starters like Cole, Archer, Duffy,etc... Use free agency to shore up the bullpen.
  15. Yeah, 30-35% that "make it" to the major leagues sounds about right. But 10-15% of that are guys that stick and are contributors for multiple years.. Players like Dozier, Rosario, Gibson, etc... The rest are guys like Logan Darnell, Jason Wheeler, Pat Dean... technically they made it but then end up bouncing around the minor leagues or overseas.
  16. As far as catchers go, yeah...I'm a little confused as to who is the better prospect in the Twins system, Rortvedt or Banuelos.
  17. Seth, interested in the picture at the top. Is this from the day late in spring training when it was announced that Trevor would have TJ?
  18. I know. Isn't it a shame that Miguel Sano had TJ surgery and now has a damaged arm and can't throw BB's over to first base anymore?
  19. I'd probably bump Enlow up above Baddoo and Javier. Think he has a really high ceiling. From what I've read the spin rate on his curveball is off-the-charts good. Is there a chance that Blayne gets a late season look-see at Cedar Rapids if he continues to develop in 2018? Or maybe he just does extended spring and then spends a full season at Elizabethton?
  20. Yeah, I think Gordon is expendable in the right deal if Dozier is signed to an extension. Gordon might be a 2B long-term anyway. I'd also like to hang on to Blayne Enlow if possible.
  21. Seems to me the Pirates would want more high-end pitching prospects back than just Slegers. Not sure the Bucs have a major need in their OF for Kepler either.
  22. Someone like Gerrit Cole is probably going to cost you Gordon plus a top pitching prospect like Gonsalves, Romero or Littell. Add in another lower level piece or two with a decent ceiling. Gets expensive but you can't win without pitching.
  23. Think trades for Colome or Hand would take a higher end pitching prospect than Stewart to go with Gordon. Maybe need to add Thorpe or Littell..most likely a deal breaker. Wilson tailed off a bit with the Cubs late this year so he could probably be had for less.
  24. Correct They'd most likely pick higher than the 20th pick. Also, a handful of teams may not even have an open 40-man spot to make a pick which is the reason they'd pass.
