HitInAPinch replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News

Just one man's opinion..... Overall, I'm not a believer is this whole "blocking" thing. If the "up and comer" can't get playing time due to someone else "blocking" them, I'd have to question the skills of that "up and comer". -

Think Big, or Go Home: I'd take a shot at Ramos. Injured, no QA from Nationals. 1 year contract for recovery time plus option year. Not sure how I'd structure that, as Ramos would probably bolt after 1st year if fully recovered. Weiters. Another, 'why not' ? From MLBTR: "Wieters also didn’t receive strong framing reviews, though he was solid with his arm by measure of Baseball Prospectus." Would OK framing be OK for Twins pitchers? Take a shot at a lot less than the $17M he made last year? His hitting was off last year. Which included 17 HR's. Avila: "Fangraphs' measure of catching defense, Avila ranked second in the major leagues in 2014. He also led the American League, throwing out 36 baserunners attempting to steal. Avila was second in caught stealing percentage, and had a league-best three passed balls among qualified catchers." Castro. Probably the safest bet, if he can hit anything. Good 'change of scenario' bet? Take a whack at Ramos, but would be happy with either Castro or Avila. -
****** Conspiracy Theory Alert ****** The reason for the firing Brunansky is that new Twins management has struck a deal with JOE MAUER to be the new Twins Hitting Coach!!

No question with these 2 guys. It's a 2 year plan. Bruno and Davis, IMHO, were kinda 'low hanging fruit'. Hitting and defense were problematic. No pitching staff can be successful with that. So, out with Bruno and Davis. I see pitching, especially with Flavey's background, really getting a workover in year 2. Need to gather those stats before making changes.

Agree. I believe the phrase is "knee-jerk reaction". I just don't see Falvey and Levine as being those type of people. Something needed to be changed throughout the organization, as far as MiLB training goes. There may still be more changes. But with Falvey's background in Cleveland, I bet any pitching coach/philosophy change may be a little later.

Article: Cody's 2016 Twins Offseason Blueprint
HitInAPinch replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Thanks for the write-up, Cody. My thoughts are: Trevor May will be in the starting rotation. Back issues are causing too much stress when a reliever. Actually, I'd try to trade him, if possible at this point. Plouffe is nothing more than a maybe. Maybe at a really low price, maybe as a bench player, etc. I firmly believe Plouffe will find a better job elsewhere. No to Drew (promote from within), a maybe or "what the heck..." on Avila. Matz for Dozier in some kinda trade? I don't actually know who is playing 2B for the Mets, and what I've seen on their 25 roster doesn't mean much to me. I'd really like to see something like this play out.- 36 replies

FULL REBUILD: no, IMHO. STILL REBUILDING: Yes. Bits and pieces in place that still need some more MLB playing time. In very SSS'es, they all need more MLB time. I guess: Time will tell :-)- 68 replies

Article: Intro To The Offseason
HitInAPinch replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
From the Pioneer Press: Falvey did not come to Minnesota wielding a scythe. “I’ve seen some people do that,” he said. “What we’re going to do is introduce a vision and give everyone the opportunity to get on the bus. We’re going to build out and go that way, then see who’s aligned with that vision.” In short, that vision is a collaborative marriage of analytics — or, as he calls them, “evidence-based values” — and player development. That collaboration starts with Levin, whom Falvey independently hired as the team’s general manager. Gotta get the new lingo down :-) -

I'm guessing most of the groundwork for FA has already been done. I read somewhere [ i.e. can't find it again ] that Rob Antony's position is TBD. -

Article: Three-Bagger: Heat, Holland & Handbook
HitInAPinch replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If the Twins had a couple good+ starters already, I'd take a flyer on Holland. Right now, with the veterans we're already locked into, I'd rather keep on the 'promote from within' track that was started last year with the INF / OF. -

The one name I wanted to see on this list: Byron Buxton. I could be wrong, but I don't believe he's been involved in any of these Winter League's or Arizona Fall League. He's still quite a distance away from being a good offensive contributor.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Sano's move to right was because Plouffe was at 3rd and Torii Hunter was gone? And then Plouffe got hurt and Sano moved back to 3rd. His fielding % at 3rd was .896, RF .962. I'm betting there's a better stat to use than that, just don't know what it is. I do know that Sano in RF took some adventurous routes to balls hit over his head that did not count as errors. Sano also does some similar things at 3rd: a few prat falls and a bonk on the head. Anyway, Plouffe by all accounts is gone and that Kepler kid is a lock for RF. Happy Days!

Article: COMING SOON: 2017 Offseason Handbook
HitInAPinch replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Free is good. Thanks guys! -
My guess is that gaining more defensive competence will take a couple years. I'm pretty sure the new PoBO and GM are going to need some ramp-up time. Who stays, who goes. An outfield of Rosario, Buxton and Kepler looks pretty darn good to me, defensively. Offense: still a work in progress. The infield. Ufda. Safe to say, not a Gold Glover in the group? I'm assuming Dozier is staying. So is Mauer. Sano losing weight = being in better shape and (hopefully) more agility. What I saw of Polanco: he was better at 2nd and 3rd than SS. Maybe more reps? IDK.

More from Berardino on GM search, via MLB Trader: http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2016/10/twins-hire-thad-levine-gm-rangers.html "Sawdaye over the weekend was an assistant GM position, so it would appear that Sawdaye was never in the running for the No. 2 spot in their operation that will now go to Levine."
