  1. Maeda's expression in the story picture sums up the feeling of most Twins fans.
  2. PDX - you forgot to add the the Twins pitchers also had a strikeout per inning which is another one of those awesome advanced statistics.
  3. Small positive but Smeltzer did a solid job as a long reliever and saved the rest of the bullpen.
  4. Really hoping these guys take this opportunity and run with it!
  5. HAHAHAHA! Thanks for the laugh, Parker - albeit the article is 20 days late to be an April Fools joke...
  6. Fritz - while no one would argue that the bullpen stinks right now, I'm not sure what you stated is totally accurate if these are the "good people" the Twins let go. Trevor May is 1-1 with a -0.2 WAR, 1.86 WHIP and a 4.15 ERA. Sergio Romo is 0-1 with a -0.3 WAR, 1.94 WHIP and a 9.53 ERA. Matt Wisler is 0-2 with a -0.5 WAR, 1.80 WHIP and a sparkling 12.60 ERA. Tyler Clippard has not pitched this season (on the 60 day IL)
  7. Glad to see Sano pictured under the header "Biggest Problems Facing the Twins". Fair or not, he is a big part of the problem right now, albeit only one of the issues as Cody has pointed out. It may be just me, but it seems when Sano is hitting well it picks up the rest of the team and everyone seems to hit and play better (see 2019). When he is not, it seems the team more often than not struggles (like the current 6-10 start).
  8. I thought the Twins were done for (again) when they failed to score in the 8th and then Cruz Ks with two on and nobody out in the 9th - only to be saved by Kepler's walk-off. Interesting that Thorpe gets the start on Friday. I guess that is OK since it allows Maeda to go on his normal 5th day, while Shoemaker, Happ, Berrios and Pineda all get an extra days rest.
  9. Who got pushed off the 40 man to add Riddle, or does the COVID list open a spot?
  10. Everything in the article is based on Sano making contact - which he does not do enough as evidenced by his K% which is during his best at in the mid to high 30% and at worse (like 2020 and 2021 thus far) in the low 40%. Even Whiff Kings with top end power like Mark Reynolds, Steve Balboni and Dave Kingman didn't have such as high K% as Sano. That said, I'm OK with letting Sano play everyday - especially if he hits lower in the lineup - as was quoted above there is no one else better or ready in the system. He is what he is. He will strike out 4 out of every 10 at-bats, but when he makes contact, he hits the ball hard.
  11. On what other team would Arraez be batting 9th (or 8th in the NL) even against a left handed starter? Wonderful depth to the Twins lineup right now...
  12. AZ - while I agree with this comment in general, the article had this quote "He showed a lot of potential in 2019 that made us think 2021 should be a bounce-back season." I don't know who "us" is, but I believe that is at the crux of the posters angst. Many of "us" are more realistic about Sano - that being he does hit some majestic HRs but the majority of time he can not be trusted at the plate, and if he hasn't figured it out at this point in his career, he never will....
  13. I agree that the flexibility that Armadillo, er, um - Astudillo provides as a 26th man is a valuable commodity - especially when he provides some solid at bats.
  14. If I were running the Twins FO, I'd see what I could get in a trade for the package of Sano, Rooker and Smeltzer. If that would yield another solid starting pitcher or a 1B who is an upgrade over Sano defensively and contact wise, I'd listen.
  15. Exactly! The guys mentioned struggled in 2020 and thus the Twins need more bats on balls and Yes - I feel right now that Garlick provides a better chance to put the ball in play than Rooker. Also - from all accounts - Garlick's defense is better as well. That said I hope Garlick's stay (and eventually Cave's) is short because Rooker, Kirilloff and Larnach force their way onto the roster very soon.
  16. If these guys had a solid 2020 season and strong playoff showings at the plate, I'd be less concerned about them heading into the season. But they did not (sans Simmons BA wise), and I am. Those numbers give me all the more reason to understand why the Twins kept Garlick and La Tortuga on the 26 man roster. With the "deader" ball, the Twins (are likely going to need to manufacture more runs this season so they are going to need guys who can put the ball in play.
  17. It has worked for Sano as evidenced by his -4.6 career dWAR. Long term I'm hopeful that Rooker, AK, Larnach etc force their way onto this team. That said, I don't mind seeing Astudillo (shouldn't his nickname be Armadillo instead of Turtle given the spelling of his last name?) and Garlick get a shot. With a deader ball, the Twins are going to need players who make more contact to score runs this season.
  18. Astudillo has been seeing time at 1B this Spring and has him providing more defensive flexibility. Thus he should not be considered "just" a 3rd string catcher, but as a versatile 26th man as others have suggested.
  19. Great to see the arms doing well... Great to see a lineup of potential 26-man regulars... Not so great to continue to see those regulars struggle at the plate with a whopping 3 hits over 8 innings...
  20. If this is truly the case, Seth, I'd say trade him ASAP for some lottery picks.
  21. In reading all of the comments, the Twins *REALLY* need a bounce-back year from Garver at the plate. That would give Rocco much more flexibility. And it would likely mean having Sano and his probable 40% WIFF Rate batting no higher than 7th against RHP and 6th against LHP.
  22. Please keep in mind that revenues were down significantly last season, and will be this season as well. That said, financially the Twins *should* be able to bring in another strong BP arm if they feel it is needed.
  23. I was wondering how an injured RIGHT ankle would so greatly impact his batting left-handed given when you bat left-handed, you use your LEFT ankle more (to drive, etc). Then I took a closer look at Polanco's swing in the article's photo and saw the twisting his front foot does when he swings, and the light came on! Lets hope Polanco's health improved health helps him return to the somewhat near the player he was in the first half of 2019!
  24. Terrific explanation of the process - Thank you! I believe Twins fans will continue to have an enhanced sense of concern when we hear of a "Visa issue" surrounding one of the players after what happened to Romero given that a paperwork issue was really a stupidity issue...
  25. This is encouraging news as the Twins will need Rogers to be elite to be successful.
