Article: Falvey's First Stand
Doomtints replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Of course. But no analyst is going to recommend that you sell stock if they are bullish on its future value. You may sell the stock anyway because you need to, but even as you do so you will feel like crap about it as that's a tough pill to swallow. Sure, you are doing what you have to do today, but you know you are losing in the long run. Most people of appropriate means would take out a signature loan to deal with a short term problem long before they would sell stock to deal with that problem. -

The Twins are wrong. Dozier's future value will do nothing to improve this club. They will never be able to trade Dozier for an ace. Teams in contention don't trade away their aces. Teams not in playoff contention have no need for Brian Dozier on a 2 year deal. -

Every deal in baseball is based on a player's future worth. That's the market. If Barry Bonds came back today, he would sign for the league minimum. And no one ever says to sell stocks now if they think the value will rise. -

No, they need pitching. You sign the ace when the rest of the staff is worthy of their jockstraps. Signing an ace now is exactly as daft as keeping Dozier right now. Signing an ace today would be throwing money down the drain for the Twins. By the time the rest of the staff becomes competent, the ace's contract would be up. This would be sort of like the Detroit Lions when they were drafting top tier receivers with their first round picks every year in an era when they had no QB, no offensive line, and no defense. -
Article: Jorge Polanco At SS Could Be Disastrous
Doomtints replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This thread got hijacked a bit. But let's be honest here. The people on the side saying it's great that this deal did not go through simply did not want Dozier to be traded. The conversation about De Leon and secondary assets is not the issue. The market has spoken. The Twins didn't make the trade either because they disagree with the market or they were being "too cute" and annoyed the Dodgers. This is a value judgement. Some of us value Dozier > adding pitching talent. Fine. I don't know why the conversations went elsewhere when this is what it boils down to. Perhaps those defending Dozier refuse to see it that way because this position is a bit silly and instead argue other points, I don't know. -

That's setting the bar high. Those Rangers had better pitching than the Twins currently do. I can't think of a comp to the Twins current pitching situation, though if I looked it up I would imagine it would be the Senators teams from the 50s. -

This makes the top pitching prospects even more valuable if there are fewer of them when comparied to position players. Teams should be grabbing them whenever possible. -
Article: Jorge Polanco At SS Could Be Disastrous
Doomtints replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The fear about De Leon "busting" is interesting. He can be a normal, run-of-the-mill rookie starting pitcher -- meltdowns and all -- and still be the team's #2 guy. This staff has 1 pitcher they can count on. Even a very green De Leon improves this team. If you are 4 starting pitchers down and scoffing at what you want to call a #3 starter coming in to help fill the gap, you're a weirdo. -

Yeah I dunno man. I think they probably should back away from the microphone after using the "new sunglesses" thing last year. That one simply can't be topped. Gladden pointed out on the air that Mauer has a Nike deal, and he appeared to be wearing Nike sunglasses all the time. Product placement at its finest. In this vein, it would be something like, "I'm trying compression leggings to help with my calf soreness this year." Nike makes those. Of course, Mauer also has deals with Rawlings and Steiner Sports so maybe he will throw them some bones next year. Rawlings makes chin straps that he could try, though it seems like a lost opportunity not having used that one on Nunez. -

Doomtints replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The scouting reports that claim he would be good at 2B but not at SS are a couple of years old now too. At some point you have to let the kid play and forget about the pundits. We'll see what he's worth at SS very shortly, the Twins gave themselves no other option for Polanco whether he can play there or not. -
Article: Five Remaining Free Agent Fits
Doomtints replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins should probably roll with that they have. Any of the free agents mentioned here would only sign with the Twins because sitting around their houses by themselves might seem depressing and the only option available to them is standing around in a depressing clubhouse and getting paid.- 80 replies

Maybe. But they won't get a guy who is so close to being ready. -

Article: Jorge Polanco At SS Could Be Disastrous
Doomtints replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The ideal situation is that Dozier goes somewhere else and Polanco takes his slot. However, if Dozier stays then the Twins have to put Polanco at SS. Letting Polanco rot in the minors isn't the answer. Will the result be a "disaster"? Not really, but the results on paper may not look great. Defensive metrics such as Total Zone in particular will look unfavorably upon whoever is at SS even when the ball is bouncing off of the top of Sano's head and not the head of whoever is playing SS. We all can see Dozier's defensive dropoff after Pedro Florimon was no longer standing next to him. Whoever plays next to Sano over the next few years is going to be unfairly rated defensively. Best case is that Sano gets the yips sooner rather than later and shuffles over to DH. And heck, speaking of defensive metrics, Dozier isn't that great either on paper. We all know he can play 2B adequately regardless. -

If there is one thing I have learned watching the Twins over the past five years, the biggest worry is killing a roster spot, not killing the payroll. -

Article: Twins To Deploy More Platoons In 2017?
Doomtints replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
If some teams don't know how to manage a roster it's their own faults. All teams are dealt the same hand. Every manager would love an extra roster spot but this won't solve the problem. Every team would simply stash another pitcher on the roster and keep starving the position player side. As for the Twins platooning, if they don't do it they are simply being stubborn. They have a glut of C-level DH and 1B players who could become B-level players if platooned. With some luck, maybe they even get A- production out of somebody and can flip him for a more solid player later on. In the meantime, they could freely stock the rest of the bench with defensive specialists as they would always have a capable bat on the bench that is reasonably warmed up.- 39 replies

Article: Don't Sleep On Phil Hughes
Doomtints replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Hughes has been a bit of a one trick pony. Toss heat right down Broadway and try to miss bats. This doesn't work after your heat loses a couple of ticks and was probably never going to work against teams facing off against a high powered Yankees offense. As for his contract extension, that's water under the bridge now, but I think a small majority of us were surprised by the move and did not think it was necessary or a good idea. -
Article: Forecasting Mauer's Remaining Years
Doomtints replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Mauer's plate discipline is enviable and if the Twins are suggesting he change that at all, they are doing him a disservice. Mauer has had the same hitting profile for as long as we have spray chart data. What probably confounded defenses in the past is now obvious for everyone to see. His grounders almost all go between first and second, and his flyballs almost always go to LF. Before this data exposed him, it was felt that Mauer could hit the ball anywhere. Now defenses know they can simply shift when Joe is at the plate and keep his OBP right where it is now. If Mauer wants to break out of his funk, he needs to change his timing a bit, try to mash everything for a home run (which would probably hurt his legs over time), or start trying to line drives whenever he can. -

That's a simple projection. Count how many times that was written whenever Buxton played well for 1-2 weeks. -

Yeah. Question marks at nearly every pitching slot isn't a position any team wants to be in. Gonsalves is probably going to be good but I would be shocked to see him ready this year. But at the same time I would be shocked to see many of the other pitches you listed ready to pitch next year either -- nevertheless they will be on the mound. -

We will find out shortly if the surgery he had can correct an otherwise unexplained 2-3 MPH velocity drop. I'm skeptical.
