  1. TF is designed to be playable in the snow and ice, but it's smarter to play elsewhere for as long as possible to start the season so as to maximize home field revenue. Just because they can play doesn't mean fans will show up. It is what it is. The MLB makes an effort to have midwestern teams play elsewhere to start the season, but it doesn't work out for every team every year.
  2. Who else would they hire if they want to crunch numbers? I think a lot of the stuff on Fangraphs is nonsense (though it's much better than BA), but I recognize they have the market cornered.
  3. He's the guy to put there, yeah. In other news, the water in the ice tray will turn to ice after we put it in the freezer.
  4. I find it strange that anybody gives the Twins this kind of an allowance based on the players involved in the trade. Prediction: In a few years eyebrows start to rise over these types of transactions and we hear about this again.
  5. Sheesh. Funny, but there's some truth here. Buxton has the right approach to do this himself going forward. I'm confident with his own adjustments he will be bunting home runs over the center field wall in no time.
  6. This assumes Gonzalez is the first option should a position player go down and Astudillo is the first option as a utility player behind Gonzalez. Neither may be true. What we know is Gonzalez was signed for two years, Adrianza is around (though injured), and Astudillo feels like a very good option as a full time utility player. Maybe Adrianza is going away, but we don't know. With Astudillo being the youngest and with the organization expecting him to fail, it's difficult to see him getting enough of a chance. There have been recent Twins who played well in the majors in their short chances but got passed over many times for players who performed worse and, in my opinion, they started to decline because of it. I would hate for this to happen to Astudillo. And this is only considering Astudillo's chance as a utility player, not even as a catcher. I think Castro will have one of his best years in 2019 which will block Astudillo there. Castro is in a contract year and he is coming back from a year off. He will do well. If Castro fails, it's the end of his career and he knows it. Garver similarly (though not as desperately) also wants to prove himself.
  7. I feel like that's how the Twins have always used utility players. They play every day.
  8. Reality check: Castro is more likely to be extended than Astudillo is to be the Twins #1 catcher, much less the regular #2 catcher. We love Astudillo, the Twins org keeps signing people ahead of him on the depth chart. This team won't keep 3 catchers on the roster and the utility slots are full.
  9. One thing about free agency in 2019 ... most of the free agents were practically geriatric. There were maybe four free agents under 30 who were worth cracking the wallet wide open for, and that number doesn't change much if you up the age to 32/33 either. Plus, the big spending teams have what they want/need. It's not like a cheap team is going to step in and spend Yankees-style just because the Yankees already feel they are set. Last year free agency seemed truly weird but this year it makes sense.
  10. THE TEAM IS BREAKING: Twins to Spend Last Bit of Cash on Utility Player; Block Astudillo For Two Years
  11. This is one of those deals where we should expect mediocrity so we can be pleasantly surprised. He is a good but not great addition to the team. If the rest of the offense starts firing on all cylinders, this will be an awesome pick up. If it's another year where only the utility player is good plus one other position player, this signing won't matter.
  12. The Twins signed a good backup/utility player without putting star talent in any of the starting positions. Congrats?
  13. The money's right but like nearly every other move this offseason I'm having trouble understanding WHY....
  14. This isn't a bullpen that will scare opposing teams, that's for sure. c'est la vie. All of us would have done this differently during the offseason.
  15. "Somehow, I don't know how it happened, but we ended up in our meeting this morning having more fun talking more about Willians than, again, any other player here," Baldelli said. Weird. It's almost like the guy is popular for his exciting play or something. "This is a guy that's been a successful hitter to this point," Baldelli said. Thanks for throwing him a bone there. "Where don't we want to see him defensively, is the question," Baldelli said. "We are going to move him around. We're going to give him opportunities to show us what he can do." He's been showing you. It's time for you to show him something, might I suggest an attitude other than sheer bafflement at his ability.
  16. Remember how the team stuck with Logan Morrison last year? Yeah, it's like that.
  17. I don't know that I would give someone who profiles so closely to Dan Gladden a contract like this. I would pay him his due share through arbitration and let him go in free agency -- or sooner if an internal option looks more interesting. 20 dingers a year just isn't as valuable as it used to be.
  18. Austin could be OK, but yes the story is pretty much written for the other two. And yeah, right now they are all of a similar profile. They could all swap uniforms and no one would notice.

  20. All I know is the Pohlads have done a great job of burying the Clete Thomas story and Stu is showing great courage by trying to put it back out there. When you google this there is scarce information on it. We need to keep this story alive! The Twins have multiple bobblehead giveaways every year just to push what happened to Clete down in the search results.
  21. Thank you for using keywords so Google can file this with the other articles on this topic.

  23. I like Duda, but: I don't know what this signing does for him I don't know what this signing does for this teamThis just seems like a mismatch / source of conflict for everybody involved. Though it's fun to say we have The Dude / The Big Lebowski on the team, likely he's only going to be around for the blink of an eye. One year tops with an over/under of perhaps spring training only.....
