    I love it - I think 10 years from now a consensus Mt Rushmore might look like Harmon, Puck, Hrbek, Mauer. Personally I would have TK on there-- just hard to overestimate what he's done for this organization, from even before he was named manager in 86 until right up to today.

    Good perspective. I think Gardy has some flaws but when you take your mind out of the present and think about the bigger picture, it's been an impressive career.

    I agree we need to be playing young guys. The Kubel signing is already leaving a bad taste for me. He has a huge hole in his swing on the high strike which Parker has shown on other threads. He cannot hit for average any more. Speaking of sample size.. I also think of Colabello as a potential DH but if you go back and look, Colabello hit 150 points lower than Pinto with twice the at bats and Pinto's power numbers dwarfed Colabellos. Pinto is one of the young guys and needs to be in the lineup, at catch, DH, third base, shortstop, somewhere. In hindsight 2013 would have been the season to baptize the young guys with playing time.

    I disagree with the patience given to Plouffe by this organization, but that sort of thing is just a symptom of a larger problem. We can hope the pitching is so good (or good enough) that the quality of play rises overall and we get some wins, and build on that.

    I suspected that might be Mauer but I think the three hole is fine (maybe move him up to second for a while if you feel the need). Arcia and/or Willingham batting behind him should be ok. I'm a believer in chemistry, and also a believer in promoting Jake Mauer to the big leagues as a bench coach. Why not?

    Do you have an opinion?? and are there specific players behind this? The OBP for the home run guy looks unrealistically low with the huge gap in OPS. For the long baseball season I'd rather have the on-base guy, which was what Moneyball was predicated on-- get on base, no bunts, no steals, let the next guy come up and get on base, keep the line moving, and so on, inning after inning, game after game, all year. Of course those Oakland teams also had great pitching... Tweak the numbers and it would be an interesting experiment to simulate a bunch of seasons with those guys and all others factors being equal. NCAA brackets get simulated a lot this time of year.

    I love the Bill James dashboard. Interesting that the two worst performing position players are Bartlett and Kubel. Phil Miller has a short article on Kubel tonight (3/9). It would seem Kubel's already made the 25-man cut. No one seems to really have any concern. Apparently none of them have seen Parker's heat charts. (it's still early, I could be wrong, Kubel could mash, etc) In the article, Gardenhire says he plans to use Kubel as DH and PH this year. Anyway, for better or worse, it's one less question mark going into the season.

    I also think he stays at first base. It might have been possible to see Mauer and Morneau at some point play the corner positions, but no dice. Mauer could play a better third than Plouffe I have no doubt. I admit I'd love to see Mauer in the outfield getting under a medium-deep fly ball on a sac fly situation, just to see how he throws

    There's Joe Nocera of the New York Times who regularly reports on (eviscerates is a more accurate and justified term) the latest NCAA shenanigans with respect to its labor forc-- er, I mean, its student athletes I will watch for it.

    I agree, Hughes is an excellent "change of scene" candidate! I do believe he'll be a different pitcher here. Some of those Yankee Stadium home runs might still become Target Field doubles, but having Buxton and Hicks in the outfield soon will also help.

    I am a lot higher on Worley. Than you. Like Gibson, he is also coming off an injury, and many posters on the TD discussion boards are saying he is not eligible to be sent down to AAA -- sometimes I check myself but sometimes I just take their word for it. So I predict either he wins the 5th slot in spring training, or it is given to him. If he pitches poorly he goes to the bullpen. He is still young. My question is how he has maintained the K/9 rate without an elite fastball. Also it has never made sense to me why a homer doesn't count against a pitcher's BABIP but who am I to challenge SaberMetrics

    All of Harper's seasons were low K%, his lowest being 1992 with 22 strikeouts in 546 plate appearances. Which is amazing. He was a little high in GDP per season but not anywhere near how often Mauer GDP's. Harper was a great player. I don't know if Mauer's increasing K rate is part of the same phenomenon as the rest of the team. However much he strikes out, I think he's sitting on a big year.

    Very good recap. It sounded like a good time. :-) I heard Gladden try to get Mauer fired up in an interview Fri night (and mostly succeeded, of course). Even though it seems like they would eventually find a working formula year after year, events like this are ever-evolving and not easy to pull off even when you're familiar doing them. Sounds kind of weird setting up tables in the service tunnels though. By the way, great Carew story and great choice for rim shot (Buddy Mills SNL)

    That raw emotion was a nice departure from the normal boring Peyton Manning snoozefest interviews. Sherman actually kind of put himself on the map and will now have a chance to back it up. If he performs and Seattle wins they will go down as one of the great all time Defenses and I think they can do it. Go 'hawks!

    Very abstract but very persuasive.. The injury/age/timing issue just tells me it still feels wrong, though. On the other hand he could be a guy who fits well in the clubhouse?

    Love the candor.. I don't know that I'd call speed a PED in the same way a steroid is, but maybe so in other ways. I'm also on board with leaving the 90s era juicers out of the HOF completely if that's how it plays out. But there absolutely needs to be a place in the hall for Morris!

    Does the increase in league strikeouts correlate to an increase in home runs or power? I think of control guys like Radke who did give up homers but never seemed to be burned by the homer. How about the Twins fielding these past few years (Revere was fantastic but then there was Delmon, Plouffe, Valencia, Nishioka, etc). Lots to chew on sorry for the questions :-) I'm wondering if baseball is undergoing a structural change like NFL has, from running games to passing games. If so, I hope the Twins are adjusting.

    First of all, what is your thinking? Who would you like to see win it? Of the five you list, a. Diamond b. Deduno c. Gibson d. Meyer e. Worley I am going to guess Worley. I would also like to see Swarzak get a chance and/or see Albers recapture some of that early magic. But Swarzak seems to be in Gardy's doghouse and Albers honestly probably doesn't have it. Thus they are off the list. As for Diamond, the stat geek guys on TD will tell you his peripherals are horrible, Deduno is still hurt I hear, and maybe too wild to have another good season anyway, Gibson unless he pitches lights out in spring he will be optioned, Meyer is for 2015, which leaves Worley.

    You mentioned the words 'stuffed in rotation' so any thoughts on what these signings mean for the other guys trying to make the rotation? Do you see two rotation spots up for grabs this spring?
