  1. But that's my question. Are we talking about innings Berrios has pitched in games? How much game work has Hughes had? Bonnes made it sound like there was an informal press conference so that's why I am wondering. I don't think that explanation holds. At least not by itself.
  2. I get that, but the tricky thing with the so-called "third pitch" is maybe most starts you don't need to throw it but a couple of times. Duffey pitched well enough at the end of 2015 and is young enough that we should extend him some more rope imo.
  3. All true. It's just so hard to watch a guy like Berrios pitch so well in the minors for so long.
  4. Chargois could have helped his case by not getting hit so hard. I would love to see Berrios and Duffey in the opening day rotation. If they can't get on track after a half dozen starts, you send them to AAA. As soon as they string together 2-3 good starts or get their mechanics back or whatever, call them back up. That's what option years are for. I never understood why the Twins turned that formula on its head. And if Berrios and Duffey start in the rotation and do well, all the better.
  5. I love that high zone whiff rate. It will be worth watching Santiago's starts just to hear Bert say he needs to keep the ball down.
  6. I don't get it with the replacement level veterans, either. One thing about Cleveland when Falvey was there, was they seemed to promote guys by what was best for the player. The example is reliever Cody Allen, who was a 20th round pick, but was promoted through the minors about as fast as humanly possible with no ill effect. So obviously they saw something in Allen and didn't let the memory of his draft round cloud their judgment. I bet if Jay thrives again as a reliever and stays healthy there's a 50/50 chance we see him in MLB this season.
  7. I think the days of young Twins pitchers grinding out season after season in the minors are done. It will be much more case-by-case going forward. The old front office should have known about drafting Jay and trying to make him into a starter. The new front office at least is correcting course right away.
  8. I underestimated how many innings he has actually thrown, so you are probably right. However I was thinking several years into the future. Still probably not likely.
  9. It's an interesting idea lots of us have been wondering about for years. Teams like Cardinals promote a guy quickly or use him in the MLB pen, then convert back to starter later on.
  10. All Nick said was "the ball was flying out." Interesting that you read that as "wind was blowing out" and I read it as "yep, sounds like Hughsie"
  11. Great article, Nick. Those injuries were scary but I think Buxton has harnessed his kinesthetic intelligence for MLB and is ready to take off. He might have some down seasons at the plate, but he will always have his glove (and arm).
  12. Fair enough, but in the original article there wasn't this much emphasis or detail. There could be still more detail, like how hard was he throwing in the fifth compared to the first, or what his pitch breakdown was, and so on. The velocity is nice to see. He also hit a batter. Is he one of the guys learning to "pitch inside"? I could care less about how Erv Santana and most of the other starters do this season, as long as theirs arms aren't falling off, which seems to be the only hurdle Hughes needs to clear to get into the rotation. It couldn't have been a typical offseason for him. It would be nice to see him get a couple guys out this spring, work on some 1-2-3 innings, not just the mere act of throwing off a mound equals success. But it sounds like he feels really good, so there's that.
  13. Which other starts was he experiencing tingling and numbness in his fingers between innings?
  14. Sorry to hear that about Sano, but I don't doubt it. I'm usually more frustrated watching him bat than field. Even as a check swing machine he should put up nice numbers, but not to the level of the MVP hype. Maybe he needs a bigger bat grip, or to move way up in the box and swing through. Maybe he doesn't have that good "batters vision." Who knows.
  15. We had the same velocity discussion about Perkins last March, FWIW My gut guess was always that they are paying Hughes lip service, and that he would begin the season on the DL. Hughes already saw his fastball velocity drop noticeably between 2014-2015. He might need to reinvent himself as a crafty righty. The BA against on 0-2 counts is alarming, either way. http://www.fangraphs.com/pitchfxo.aspx?playerid=7450&position=P&pitch=FA
  16. May was hitting 96 in his start last weekend. Give me the young guys with lots of life still on their arms.
  17. But what does Curt Schilling think, and can he borrow some money from you, Mr. President? He promises to pay you back.
  18. Congrats to the founders and everybody else here. I love this place. Not to kiss a**, but I think the discussion moderators are what keeps this place so great. As a contrast, look at the Twins discussions the Star Tribune. They missed the boat. For the life of me I can not understand why more news sites have not devoted resources to moderating discussion of their content and finding good moderators.
