I'm expecting to see very few "cutters" and many more curveballs than last year. I also believe that will yield more strikeouts, maybe a couple more HRs, but fewer runs overall--and more wins! -
Article: Ervin Santana Suspended 80 Games For Steroids
Kwak replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
"...until they are ready..." Players aren't like bananas. Sometimes the "best" player is the younger/inexperienced player. Occasionally (all too often) the failed rookie was never destined to be productive--but he still might be the best available. Sorry to say it, but the comment "until they are ready" is basically a self-serving, glittering generality, that is based on hindsight--if he succeeded he was ready, and if he "didn't" he wasn't ready. -
Article: Santana Suspension Raises Concerning Questions

Santana has lots of money and access to the finest healthcare insurance--yet you postulate he "asks someone" to get him "something to give him an edge" and we are supposed to believe that this substance isn't prohibited? Not all Fairy Tales begin "Once Upon a Time...". -

Yes! Oh, the many posts I couldn't have read about CFers and starting pitchers! TD would have been so short on subjects to post about that threads on departed Twins (like Joe Benson) would have cluttered the Forums. -

Gosh, May and Meyer, were behind both Milhone and Pelfrey in Ryan's Dream Team. Those two are damned or ****. Right now I'm envisioning the ceiling of the Sistine chapel (fresco part) and May and Meyer are in this bad place with a large finger pointed at them. -

Not sure, but I would think that MLB considering offering a FA contract could demand medical testing--including those of PEDs. Of course, a player could refuse, but then the team could respond--"we're outta' here!" Said contract offer could (should?) include a clause concerning the use of PEDs--including penalties. However, I didn't see the Twins' offer to Santana--so, I can't form a conclusion. -
Article: Minnesota Twins Set Opening Day Roster
Kwak replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Others weren't on the 40 man roster this Spring (Relief Pitchers for example) and room was made to add them to the roster. Thus, that really wasn't an impediment. I'm not implying that Fryer should (or not) be on the roster--but being on the 40 man roster at the beginning of Spring Training didn't prevent Fryer from being on the Active Roster.- 70 replies

Pinto had a huge setback with a concussion--so he wasn't "fit for duty" yet. Fryer was the other option--and he "hasn't paid enough dues" in the minors ala` the Twins Way.- 70 replies

Article: Minnesota Twins Set Opening Day Roster
Kwak replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This roster was constructed to avoid 2015 being a disaster. Consider, declining season ticket sales, total paid attendance, and just plain relevance in the entertainment market of Minneapolis. Toss in a new manager and the inevitable comparisons between the two and a plan was constructed to try and make 2015 season "not stink". The flies in the ointment with that policy are: this season isn't going to assist in improving subsequent seasons and 2015 for the Twins isn't going to the World Series like 2014 and KC Royals--in short 2015 won't be memorial nor will it help for the future, it will simply stand alone and be forgotten.- 70 replies

Answer is in two parts: Santana isn't a CF, and Escobar can be inserted in the lineup whenever Molitor wishes. I chose not to be a SA and say neither Plouffe, Dozier, or Mauer will play CF so Escobar can play when Molitor deems--but I'm trying to change my image.

Article: Which Righty Relievers Can Get Lefties Out?
Kwak replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There have been numerous RHRP that were effective against LHB. The good news is that they are effective against RHB too! These are the prototypical RPs--pitchers who can get batters out consistently irrespective of in which batter's box they stand. Find/develop that type of pitcher instead of relying on "tricks" to get outs.- 19 replies

Article: Twins Say Now Is Not The Time For Trevor May
Kwak replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Given the results of the past two seasons and this Spring your statement doesn't hold water. "Too fast" implies that another year or so of minor league experience--and Voila` a major league quality ballplayer is produced. We have waited those two seasons (plus this Spring) and yet Hicks still isn't major-league caliber. He wasn't moved "too fast"--he simply Failed. Hicks likely will never amount to a major league caliber player. -
Article: Twins Reduce Clarity With Roster Cuts
Kwak replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Returning to the premise of the thread "...reducing clarity...", I must disagree. The roster decisions confirm that the Front Office is "putting lipstick on a pig" hoping to convince the public (hey, it appears that they have convinced at least half of TD posters!) that the Twins are a "good" ballclub worthy of their support (and money). The definition of a "good" ballclub is "flexible"--it is whatever you want it to be. 2015 is but another season where problems were "defined", some personnel changes were made, some actions taken, and a posture of "fixed" made. Sadly, "fixed" hasn't yielded a "good enough" ballclub. But, some things have been consistent: never a pronouncement that a "total rebuild" is/was needed or that management expected that the process would be 5+ years.- 39 replies

Hicks playing everyday in Rochester? For perhaps three months--and then what? Hicks's Spring has washed him out of the everyday-OFer category as far as the Minnesota Twins. It's time to move him before the clash with Buxton for playing time--even for a bus token.- 39 replies

Article: Twins Say Now Is Not The Time For Trevor May
Kwak replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
" Are the Twins Making the Right Decision ? " We will have our answer within two months. My gut, (and history) cries "NO!". The inevitable roster moves, followed by the question "can we really trust these results?". Leading to the off-season between '15 and '16--"What now?" More of the same that we have heard from 2012--"There! I 'fixed' things". Rinse, Lather, Repeat. Or, "Nuts, this ain't working". "We gotta try something new." -

The Twins don't need to trade for a mediocre relief pitcher. If the "veterans" Ryan bought are unacceptable, then start using the options on the minor leaguers. A platoon of RPs were drafted recently, (plus those already on hand) use these guys. Each has a total of three years of options--use them!

Article: Embracing Substance Over Style
Kwak replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Let's take a step back to last Spring--Santana was professed to be "not ready" and sent to the minors. Escobar was one of the guys from the Liriano trade--"or how the Twins SS problem was fixed". Back to 2006, Bartlett was deemed to be "not ready" (didn't "take charge" or something like that)--so the Twins started a mediocrity (a bit generous, but I'll be nice here) rather than promote Bartlett (who wasn't any Spring chicken). Enough was enough and the rookie was promoted in 2006 (only to be...it's too painful to continue). Returning to 2014, CF was a similar mess to '06's SS problem, so...promote somebody who has speed and a strong arm. Enter Santana. "Not Ready" to play SS, but somehow can be trusted in CF. Santana was a SS not a CF--but oh my did he hit way above expectations. He is still a SS and not a CF. The question to be answered: will the Twins develop the guy they had projected to be a starting SS or accept mediocrity to try to win a few more games this season (since I expect that CF will continue to be a bleeding ulcer)? As far as a trading one of them? I don't think the Twins were offered much (if anything) for either Santana or Escobar--else a trade would have happened by now.- 41 replies
