  1. They gave up a piece expected to be part of their major league bullpen. Prospect rank really doesn't matter at that point. Then you have one live arm with difficulty finding the strike zone and a gritty second baseman in the low minors with good pedigree. It was a pretty decent package of players to give up.
  2. They follow me on Twitter. I spent about 2.5 hours answering questions about the Twins system from Braves fans that have read me as a Braves writer for the last 4 years LOL I retweeted Seth's post that he had checked on the minor league lineups, which is I'm sure how that info got out as well. Matt got most of his info from me over the course of the night, though he's plenty knowledgeable in his own right on prospects.

  4. It's not a "read". It's talking with people inside the organization. The team's intention is to fill the rotation with young pitchers, hence needing an arm that handles multiple innings, not something in the current bullpen or something any of the relievers on the current 40-man can do. It's still an issue that the team is now using the option train to handle instead of having a long guy, having moved Akeel Morris up this week and optioned a starter down to get to the All-Star break. There are a lot of guys within the organization who loved Colon, and a lot that wanted him released without DFA'ing him, but the front office has turned DFA's into at least org filler gold in the past, so they attempted to do the same with Colon. They ended up having to release him due to no interest in him at his salary. The Braves handled things as classy as they could with a guy who didn't want to do what they were asking him to do in order to get the money they were paying him. Rather than have him be an issue, he was DFA'd and eventually released.
  5. Once again, the public story and the private story are two different stories...
  6. Well, publicly, yes. However, when he was asked to move to a non-starter role, that "mentor" role suddenly shifted significantly. That's what eventually led to his DFA, otherwise, he'd be the long man in Atlanta right now.
  7. As a Braves fan, sorry. I announced my resignation to my Tomahawk Take staff the day Colon was DFA'd. I started at Puckett's Pond the day he was officially released. I end my first week with the Pond with him signing. Lovely. LOL. He's been toast all year. I had the misfortune of watching him befuddle hitters often the last few years, but he's not the same guy this year. His movement isn't the same, he's actually struggling with consistency in his simple delivery, which is certainly adding to the walks.
  8. So, any idea on Yeltsin Encarnacion? 19 in DSL, but shown good walk rates previously. This year, he's hitting .388/.508/.653 with 4 triples and an 11/3 BB/K ratio. Scouting the stat line so far as I really don't have anyone I keep in touch with that works Twins DSL, so until they play the Braves I won't hear back on him. Any idea before then on him??
  9. I've finished both the new HoC and OiTNB seasons. I would say the HoC season is something that gives the story either a new start, or a logical conclusion. OiTNB was a cluster. I enjoy the characters, and I do like how they used one of the show's more popular characters for a possible change in the system, but that show is definitely set up for the next season with the ending. Both are shows that I enjoy the characters on, so I keep following, but there were HoC episodes this season that were tough to follow they got so bogged down in trying to create drama.
  10. I sure wish the park could be visited without dropping $20 apiece. I wanted to take my kiddos to see the stadium as the only night we'd have free (tomorrow night) was sold out, but my seats for Memorial Day in Target Field six rows from the field cost $5 less than a tour of the Saints stadium. That's rather odd to me.
  11. You've not noticed the black hole that is the Braves bench, have you? Julio Teheran pinch hit and pinch ran in back to back games between starts.
  12. Yes, though in fairness, the post 10th round stuff could be interesting when we get in June and official papers hit the league office on which high school players opt out of the draft. Hard to convince that long shot HS guy to leave his commitment with a $700K bonus in the 12th round if he's not allowed to be picked at all. That could determine better where the money is spent and allow for more of an intentional plan on the first few rounds, whereas the Braves even admitted that they didn't expect as many of their 11th-40th round guys to come to the table willing to deal as did, and it left them scrambling. Having better ideas there will help budgeting for a team looking to manipulate - or at least it should, in theory.
  13. On the first, it's a tough question to answer. It depends on the year. College talent in a draft can be low due to a number of the best high schoolers signing in a few drafts in a row or it can be very high due to the opposite reason. There are always some guys who develop in college, but there is also value in getting a guy out of high school and not having a college mess up his arm or swing as colleges are there to win while the minors don't really care if they lose a game 20-0 if there's something positive developmentally that can come out of it for the players involved. On your second question, that's huge. Especially with the flattening of the draft pools, the Twins have about as much ability to manipulate their draft as anyone could this season. The Braves used 3/40/44 last year to really use their large bonus pool to their advantage. Three top 50 picks is a huge advantage for sure.
  14. He's bold as heck on Carlson, and I love it. I'm a big fan, but I was surprised on that.
  15. But the industry had also zeroed in on Anthony Molina in last season's draft class early and Riley Pint and Jason Groome as freshmen/sophomores and those guys didn't go 1-1. In fact, I have a Braves Twitter follower who is a big draftnik, and he tracks the different mock drafts each major place puts out. The one out at each major place on the 25th of April had either Jason Groome or Kyle Lewis as 1-1 last year. Neither went top 10.
  16. Not Jeremy, but did have a chat with a couple scouts with NL teams this last week (not the Braves ones on this topic, interestingly), and they all pretty much assume he'll be a back-end first round guy. Pretty much late-teens on through CBA picks is expected range. Coming into the year, he was a guy most saw as a 3rd-5th round type of hitter.
  17. In all seriousness, is this any different than a guy like Christian McCaffrey (sp?) not doing any individual workouts for NFL teams leading up to the draft or skipping his bowl game?
  18. The draft flattened out a ton in the middle of the first round as well, with nowhere near the drop after the first 10 picks that there used to be either. There are likely to be less deals. Another thing to consider is that a player can completely opt-out of the draft process now - meaning no team is allowed to select him. That was a little one-line thing in the new CBA and likely won't affect a first round pick, but it could make a difference in saving money for 11th round and beyond. As I'm digging deeper into draft stuff for both sites, I'm finding a lot of interesting scouting differences on players. One guy I'm hearing a ton of helium in talking to guys in the game versus BA/Scout/MLB Pipeline/etc is outfielder Heliot Ramos. I've talked with two scouts in the top 5 that say he's in serious consideration for their team.
  19. And still...I love where they've gone with it, though I will say there could be ugly routes to go with this. I hope they don't go there, but the mental health worker for nearly a decade in me is absolutely enthralled right now.
  20. Playstation Vue is a lovely thing. Saved me a ton of money. And I get to watch great television like this...
  21. Wow has Legion been amazing. That is all.
  22. As a guy who has been the resident (by location) Braves fan on first the ESPN boards, then BYTO, and now TD, congrats on 5 years! Even though I don't wade into the Twins area all that frequently, I do enjoy multiple areas of the site and definitely enjoy the community created here!
