  1. The problem is, the Twins have historically just created other log jams when Ryan (or Smith, who was just a Ryan clone with Ryan as his advisor) used this method in the past. The Ponsons and Lambs and Boones and Hernadezes and Walters and Diamonds etc etc etc.... and it just doesn't work. The few prospects/players they finally culture and get to The Show, Ryan has traded for more prospects (like Span for Meyers) just when they are useful, and the team never happens. Folks on this list are always calling for the same thing.... like sell high on Plouffe just as he has become the player fans had always hoped he would. The Marlins cleaned house between the 2012 an 2013 season, took payroll down to 30 million something I think (not sure the number but it was very low)..... and two years later, they are ready to compete. Two years. Terry Ryan may be a nice guy - I don't know and have never met him - but his ship has sailed years ago.
  2. Pelfrey, Darnell, Stauffer...... and that is supposed to be comforting and make one breathe easier?
  3. Here's to Phil having a good April, which is rare. Last year's April was forgettable, and you have to go back to 2010 I think to find a good April. Last year.... horrible April, great May, poor June and July, very fine August and September.
  4. The genius of Terry Ryan. And he continues to keep his job. "Nunnie"??? I threw up on that one. More of the same. What Molitor said about Milone is very depressing. I thought Paulie would be different.
  5. Always fun to read, but forg you. Forg it all. Very annoying.
  6. In regards to "still learning"........ the player in the majors (or the minors) that isn't still learning is a player that will soon be out of a job. Everyone that is successful in this game is always still learning and adjusting, even from pitch to pitch and game to game. If not, the end is near.
  7. Why not just trade Meyer for a centerfielder? The Twins don't want to promote him anyway. I hear he can be traded for a pretty fine center fielder.
  8. While I am in agreement with you on center and the 5th starter, I think Shane Robinson deserves to be considered a major leaguer. He has always been a fine sub/replacement player in his time with the Cardinals, and he hit .429 (3/7) in 3 games (2 as a pinch hitter and a start in game 6) in the 2013 NLCS. He hit a Major League pinch-hit solo homer against the Dodgers (Howell) in the 7th inning of game 4 for an insurance run and a 4-2 lead and the final scoring, and had two singles off Kershaw in his first two at bats in the clinching game 6, tagging Kershaw with the bases loaded and two outs for a couple more RBI in the third. He may not be the answer for the Twins in center, but he should definitely be considered a major leaguer. I feel the bullpen will be a major problem until they get some help, hopefully from Burdi and Reed.
  9. Don't you have to plan for the 40 to 50 games that Mauer will be out because of injuries?
  10. To demote Vargas after last season for his recent spring training at bats is maddening. This team appears to be in a lot of trouble. To have Pinto get hit in the head 3 times in the same at bat is crazy. I didn't see the game..... did he move back? After the first time, why would anyone let him be close? Was the dugout asleep? Was Pinto nuts? How many times has Adam Jones hit someone in the head with that extended follow through? I can remember several, and I really don't follow him.
  11. This is a bit off topic, but I see this claim a lot, and it needs to be addressed. This still doesn't appear to be true. Just as the Metrodome was bigger in virtually all dimensions than Target Field..... (but is commonly and wrongly referred to as more spacious............) http://www.ballparkmagic.com/PlayingField.html .....other than just down the left field foul line and maybe the first 20-25 feet in, new Yankee Stadium is more spacious in left field than Target. http://www.andrewclem.com/Baseball/YankeeStadium_II.html
  12. “Out of the stretch, he started elevating. He got the strikeout on the high fastball but his pitches were changing,” said Molitor. Bumgarner sure looked good elevating and then elevating more against the royals in game 7. Exactly what is wrong with elevating if the result is a strikeout?
  13. If the Twins don't want to give Meyer a shot, I hear he can be traded for a pretty darn good major league center fielder. Do the Twins need a center fielder?
  14. Except......... Meyer has been given no starts in spring training. Not a one. He has been used in relief for all his innings.
  15. Perkins says "wear-down", but he looks soft and chubby and not in shape, and he gained that chub througout last year. I hope he is ready, but my real hopes lie with Burdi and Reed in the second half of the year as Perkins' soft body wears down more. It didn't surprise me at all that he strained muscles that weren't ready to pitch.
  16. Nunez did make me cringe the other day when he totally took a bad route in left field and misplayed the fly/drive that dropped in as he flailed on his butt slide and missed it in the 8th inning with 2 outs. Ouch. Just one play, but it looked like Delmon Young was back. http://m.mlb.com/stl/video/topic/8877482/v46957483/stlmin-easley-delivers-rbi-single-to-left-field/?c_id=stl Nunez did keep it in front of him, though.....
  17. Maybe I have missed it, but what velocity is Milone's fastball coming in at in Spring Training so far? I was always concerned that the difference in his fastball and change was about 7 mph last year. So far, the only pitchers that have actually received starts this spring training are Gibson, Hughes, Santana, Nolasco, and Milone. Meyer, May, Berrios, and Pelfrey all came in after the starters. Does that mean anything?
  18. ".........Would he (Santana) remain in center field, where he excelled last year and where the Twins have no clear frontrunner......." I never felt that Santana excelled in center field. I would call it adequate to poor defense. I am looking forward to seeing what he does at short. If he proves to be a liability, and he is still hitting and center field is still a problem waiting for buxton, then he can try to get better in center and take over for a spell, I guess, but that would make the outfield defense just horrible.
  19. As long as the Twins continue to stockpile replacement players that are 29-34 years old in AAA (many we now see playing in the Spring Training games in the second half of the games), the real prospects that will actually make the major league team will continue to jump from AA to the show. There has been plenty written on this site, and other fine articles elsewhere, about the lack of need for many to play in AAA at all. I think they will be just fine with Doug managing them in Chattanooga. More than fine. I think that is the best place for the group.
  20. The only way one truly knows how to pronounce a name is to ask the source. To rely on announcers as the definitive source of pronunciations will get you a lot of wrong versions. The current adventure in college basketball is J.P. Tokoto (TOE-ka-toe), forward for North Carolina. I have been hearing many wrong versions all year, and even more tonight on the ESPN website highlight reels from the woman that narrated it. The home team announcers, hopefully, will get it right, though. Maybe one of the TDers in camp right now can ask Berrios directly?
  21. Prior would probably have washed out in the minors while playing for the Red Wings for yet another season to correct his walk ratio and save another year of Twins' control. I think a world series championship is always worth it. That is the reason the game is played. All speculation that it may have happened, but fun to think about.
  22. The Twins should just have Graham tank spring training, pitch horribly, and then the Braves will trade for a lower level prospect, and situation solved. Graham can then get ready, if he can, at Rochester, and have a chance to be called up when Fien or Stauffer or Duensing or Thielbar tank. I would love to see the pen being rocked by Reed and Burdi by mid-season. Let's get on with it. "......and the most troubling part is that he saw no performance boost after moving to the bullpen in the final two months, allowing a .378 batting average with seven strikeouts and five walks in eight appearances." This is just not encouraging. There is a reason the savvy Braves, who develop great pitching, didn't protect him.
  23. Maybe Joe should take bunting lessons from Carew and bunt into the shift. He has good speed of foot. Take those outside edge pitches down the empty third base line with the shift on. A single is a single, whether you bunt or get it through the infield. Puckett adapted. I think that is the key, here. If one just always tries to be who they used to be, the pitchers and the defense adjust, and you find yourself a shell of what you once were and not who you would like to be. Puckett became who he wanted to be because he made changes and adapted. Someone with the athleticism of Joe Mauer should be a great candidate for adapting to keep the edge on his side instead of the opponents, whether that be power, or bunting, or hitting it where the defense isn't.
