Interesting guestion, Nick. We were all both surprised and disappointed when Wes moved on mid-season. I wasn’t impressed when Maki got the promotion. But, I knew less than nothing about him. And how could he succeed, replacing a guy so many here and elsewhere were raving about. Reading your comments, it appears Maki was successful working with Pagan. So my question, is Maki better than we feared? Could he be more effective than Wes?

Minnesota Adds Farmer to Infield Mix
roger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Will begin by saying I like this move, actually both moves. But I have a couple questions. First, is his defense at short good? Second, is it possible that Legumina was added to the 40-man to complete this trade? Could a player have more value in a potential trade because he was added to the 40-man? As for what this means. Miranda is their 3B of the future, short, medium and long term. Farmer is their starting shortstop. When Lewis/Lee is healthy (Lewis) or more experienced (Lee), either becomes the Twins' starting shortstop with Farmer moving to the utility role that he seems well suited for and at a reasonable salary. This also means that most of us need to understand, what I suspect the FO already does, that Correa ain't signing with the Twins. I can live with that. Now let's see them move on to their pressing needs, a starting catcher and top bullpen arm. -
Twins Trade Gio Urshela to the Los Angeles Angels
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting, very! Count me among those who's eyes told me he was better defensively than some of the new numbers suggest. I thought he was fantastic. Also was pleasantly surprised at how well he hit. But this trade accomplishes a lot: 1) opens third base for Miranda, full time; 2) takes Miranda out of the mix at first, clearing it for Arraez, full time, or in some type of platoon with AK; 3) Takes another $9+M off the books; and 4) returns a young prospect who it appears doesn't require a 40-man spot, ie, opening another spot on the roster. That's the type of move many here appear to like, I sure as heck do. Should Miranda not be adequate at third, the Twins have both Lewis and Lee on the verge of taking that final step. Sure seems responsible for management to have one penciled in at short and the other at third, should Miranda not be entrenched there. I don't know what the future holds for the kid coming back. But he is young and hopefully, will contend for a spot in the rotation three or so years from now. Ranked at #22 at his young age must mean that he has some promise. But we Twins fans should also BEWARE! This is the type of move one would expect should the Front Office have decided to rebuild.- 108 replies

Many forget, however, that one of Eddie's numbers that was better were RBI. Some of us still believe those are important.

Love your proposal, Seth. Especially for a guy so many here consider to be worthless. I am confident he will return to the pitcher he was and be a valuable piece of a Twins rotation that is built to win games 2 thru 5.

I am puzzled, Sherry, every time I read a post saying the Twins should sign ACE pitcher X. Have never responded with the reasons why I believe it isn't needed. To sign any ACE free agent pitcher the Twins are going to get an aging starter who has performed well for at least a few years. They will likely need to pay top dollar for many years. Looking back at this type of pitcher signed over the recent past indicates many aren't all that great for their new team. Furthermore, there is a strong chance they will be mediocre over the later years of the contract. in reality, there are bloody few Jason Verlander's out there. And the truth of this Series win by the Astros is that their pitchers #2-#4 were the reason they won. And that is both my point and question. Aren't starting pitchers #2-#5 equally important as the #1? Assuming good health, which is both unpredictable and unlikely, winning games two and three of any three game series is as important as winning game one. Mathematically winning 2 of 3 is more important. So my position is to have a solid #1 starter, which the Twins have with Sonny Gray. Then I want the Twins to be able to have their starting pitcher be equal to or better than the opposition over the next four days. With Mahle, Maeda, Ryan and Ober, I expect the Twins just may have that. Add Paddack who should return late in the season and two young guns, Varland and SWR, and I see a starting rotation that I like a lot. And the good news is that they aren't paying $20M-$30M for five or more years to one guy who is close to the downside end of his career. Their starting rotations had a lot of problems over the past years. But trades for Maeda, Ryan, Gray, Mahle and Paddack together with their development pipeline beginning to arrive should make 2023 an exciting year.

Twins Add Four to their 40-Man Roster
roger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Maybe Seth or someone else knows the answer. What spot will the Twins be picking in this year's Rule 5 draft? I don't know if their adding Leguma makes it less likely or more that they will make a pick. Obviously, if they are picking early in the draft there may/should be some interesting prospects available. Heck, maybe even a solid catcher. But that may be a dumb comment as he wouldn't be experienced enough to be their 1A catcher and carrying 3 catchers for the entire year is tough.- 52 replies

Twins Add Four to their 40-Man Roster
roger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Like most I am surprised by Legumina. Fortunately, the Twins know a lot more about him than I. The roster is full. Should they want to pick someone in the Rule 5 they need to create a spot. They are also gonna have to create at least three spots for a catcher, shortstop and top reliever. And that would give them only two catchers on the roster. That seems unlikely. Will they begin the process Friday by non tendering someone? I look at their roster and see 8 outfielders, well 7 plus Gordon. Will there be some trades coming, hopefully soon.- 52 replies

Thanks so much for linking this, DJL44. Doubt the Twins have ever had two AFL all-stars, especially both middle infielders. I know the AFL isn't what it was awhile ago, but historically most of the stars of the league went on to have very good MLB careers.

Twins Spotlight: OF Mark Contreras
roger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Interesting, Seth. I like Contreras, a lot. I just don't know if the day you post this interview is the day he leaves the Twins. I expect they are going to need to manufacture at least one roster spot from their current outfielders. That decision for me would be easy, Garlick. So when I saw earlier today that he signed a one year contract, my thoughts turned to Contreras. I love his defense and believe he should remain with the team the next few years. If the Twins are going to add only two or three today before the Rule 5 deadline, they have those spots. But as soon as they need spots for that shortstop, a catcher or two and at least one bullpen guy, they are gonna have to open a couple spots. -
That sure looks exciting. I would flip Miranda with Lee at third base. Have the Twins had a good catcher since Mauer?

What Happens With Closing Time for the Twins
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agreed. Note, I didn’t suggest he be a late inning guy. If memory serves, there were several outings were he came into nearly impossible situations and got the job done. Don’t recall what inning those were, doubt they were late in the game.- 16 replies

What Happens With Closing Time for the Twins
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
All this discussion and nobody even mentions Thielbar. How many times did he come into tha t Fireman’s role and get the job done. Heck, often better than anyone would have hoped. I like Rogers, a lot, but not certain he is the guy they should try to sign. I want them to get the best available, whomever that is. And based on last year that ain’t Rogers.- 16 replies

Who Will the Twins Add to their 40-Man Roster?
roger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Great report, Seth. Thanks. The biggest shock to me is that the deadline is already tomorrow. Man, November is flying by. I see them taking Julien and Canterino, who I view as locks. Doubt they will take a lot more. Probably one more for a total of three, but I won't be shocked if is only two this year. After adding two you got to look at the 40-man and see who would need to be replaced. So when you are considering most of these other pitchers, are they viewed better than say Balazovic, Enlow, Pagan or Megill? Cause if you add more than two or three, someone else is going to have to go. Same goes for position players. That is why I am doubtful that Severino gets added. No question in my mind that Julien is both ahead of him and viewed by the Twins as a better prospect. With so many outfielders on the team, do they keep Urbina? If so, they need to part with Garlik or Contreras tomorrow. On the other hand, they are going to need to part with that duo sometime over the coming months to open spots for that shortstop and catcher. Subject to trades, there really isn't anyone else who could logically be moved to open spots.- 33 replies

Question, Nick. Shouldn’t the$4.5M spent on buy-outs be included innext year’s budget? Do you know how the Twins handle this? As for players leaving, will be shocked if they move on from Urshela. Seems that so many of you assume they will, yet I thought he was one of their best players.- 18 replies

Twins Spotlight: Catcher Patrick Winkel
roger replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Am looking forward to listening to this later today, Seth. Based on what you wrote, sounds like he could be a good prospect. I believe that the most important part of any catcher's game is his defense, blocking balls, throwing out runners and managing the pitching staff. Is he, or can he be, above average behind the plate? Provided he can hit a little, defense should be his ticket to the 'show.' -
Is a Splurge on Relief Worthwhile for Minnesota?
roger replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Has anyone else wondered if the Front Office and Manager talk about things such as pitcher use? Sure doesn't seem that way to me. A manager who takes his pitchers out of games by the 5th inning and a FO that doesn't invest in several experienced multi-inning pitchers to get those next couple innings seems to me to be an organization that is outta whack! As for help for next year's pen. I have said it several times in these past few days, I want QUALITY over QUANTITY. Go out and sign the best damn late inning reliever you can to go with Lopez and Duran. That just might give them what KC had back whenever. And if the manager is going to continue his 5 inning B.S., they had better make certain there are at least two multi-inning guys in that pen...whether signed as free agents or from within.- 23 replies

Twins AFL Report (Week 5): Julien and Martin Continue Hitting
roger replied to Steve Lein's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
There is one other aspect of both of these kids, Julien and Martin, games that isn't talked about enough. And that is speed. I want the Twins to begin running again. Put pressure on the other team's D and steal a lot of bases, especially with the bigger bags. Adding Lewis to this duo and I say bring the pirana's back. Loved watching those teams back whenever.- 34 replies

Will the Front Office Choose to Build a Better Bullpen?
roger replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Disagree on one point, Doc. There is another glaring hole, the biggest IMO. That is a starting catcher who is better than Jeffers, both behind the plate and with the bat. That catcher may also make a difference with the success of our pitching staff.- 40 replies

Will the Front Office Choose to Build a Better Bullpen?
roger replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I think I am in agreement with much of what you are saying. But this bullpen could be close to being one of the best. To get there they need to go out and sign the best damn late inning guy on the market. With Correa gone, they have a lot of money, use some of it for that guy. Get quality over quantity. With hopefully a healthy Alcala coming back along with improvement from Moran, a bullpen closed out by Signee X, Lopez and Duran could be like the KC bullpen that took them to the Series not so long ago. As for Canterino and Enlow, let them stay as starters while coming back from surgery. One other point is they are going to have to address the elephant in the room. That is how are they going to manage their starters in 2023? Are they all going to be limited to TTTO? If so, they need to have at least two relievers who pitch multiple innings every couple days.- 40 replies
