The First Big Twins Trade: Vic Power, April 2, 1962
stringer bell commented on Michael (ClassicMNTwins)'s blog entry in Classic Minnesota Twins
Power was a Puerto Rican and I remember the announcers calling him "flashy". He solidified the defense in the infield for sure, but Harmon had to play left field. Stigman was a Minnesota native, from tiny Nimrod in northern Minnesota. He had a couple good years with the Twins. -
In the traditional view of steroid users, I think Ervin Santana would be an unlikely candidate to be a steroid user. My brother and I both commented about how slight he is (in person), which is not the typical view of steroid user (Bonds, A-Rod etc). On closer examination, and considering the properties of the steroid he used, it makes more sense that a 30-something pitcher with a UCL injury might use something to deal with recovery from stress on the UCL. I agree that 100% of the blame needs to be laid on the doorstep of the abuser. It has become the accepted response to issue a non-denial denial or more accurately an non-admission admission of guilt. I wish he would just tell the truth, but there is acceptance of such statements.

There are plenty of unanswered questions in the Santana case. Probably the least likely thing is that he unknowingly took steroids. The biggest question going forward is whether this drug was used to deal with his UCL injury. If it was, the chances that he will be able to pitch well without surgery would take a dramatic drop.

I think stability will improve the OF defense. The Twins must have had at least eight guys start more than ten games in the outfield. Many of them didn't belong.

I wrote a long time ago that this spring Pelfrey is both fully healthy and fully recovered from TJ surgery and I don't think that is really a redundancy. He has spent two wasted years with the Twins and he could be a serviceable starter, perhaps as much as a #3. The problem is that so much of the team is populated with low-upside long shots. Some may pan out, but the net gain is small especially for the dollars expended.
-
What a mess. Let me first comment on Santana. There is no excuse! The sliver of good news is that he is denied more than $6M, as it should be. Regarding Pelfrey: Put up or shut up. He is healthy, well-paid, and has contributed next to nothing for the past two years. Third and last chance with the Twins. If he doesn't perform well, he will have no one to blame but himself. Personally, I like Pelfrey and wish him the best, but the leash should be really short. Thompson or Thielbar? Burger King or McDonalds. Neither is fine dining or ever will be. I have bowed to Mr. Ryan's knowledge on a many topics, but each unexplainable decision has eroded my confidence to the point that I have to wonder if the game has passed him by. He doesn't share more than he has to, nor does he have to, but this continuing series of low-upside older players is very hard to defend.

There is a possibility Shane is right when Pinto is 100%. Nuñez could go and Herrmann could stay. Herrmann has an option remaining, so he could move back and forth freely, while Nuñez does not. At this point, Nuñez is pretty redundant to Robinson/Escobar, but one injury moves Escobar into regular status and makes Nuñez a pretty important bench player. Beyond Nuñez, the next best utility infielder is.............Doug Bernier? Despite his flaws, I think Nuñez needs to stay on the roster.

I agree that taken as a group, the decisions don't figure to build enthusiasm. As you know, I totally concurred with the Hicks decision, but would have liked to have better alternatives. I thought the bullpen should have been blown up and rebuilt with young arms. Reusse's column yesterday really hit the nail on the head about the whole roster.

On Dozier's SBs--I don't know if I can look it up, but most came early in the year when he hit leadoff. He ran considerably less when hitting in front of Mauer (perhaps to give him the 2b-1b hole?) and IIRC many of his steals from the #2 spot were double steals with Santana. Just checked BBRef, and he stole 13 bases when batting leadoff, only 7 batting second in 81 games.

I've been thinking that the Twins needed help from the left side since the offseason started. Duensing isn't ideal, but he is the best the Twins have.

I wouldn't mind Aaron Hicks doing a Glen Perkins imitation. Perk was thought to be a lost cause after being sent to the minors. He came back and became an All-Star. I have been of the opinion that Hicks had to be sent to the minors and it has come to that. Now I can hope that he figures out how to use his tools to become a standout baseball player. Many are complaining that the rebuilding Twins are using zero rookies. Remember Vargas and Santana didn't start 2014 with the club and Arcia was sent down briefly. They are now considered the first wave of what could be something very exciting. One of Rosario, Hicks or Buxton will man center field at some point this season and Miguel Sano will undoubtedly make some noise starting in Chattanooga. Pitching and young fleet outfielders will make this club much better pretty soon. I hope it is this year, but it will be soon.

While I don't disagree with the comments above, there are differences between last year and this. First and foremost, there is a new manager and pitching coach. Secondly, beyond Pelfrey, the young pitchers most of us are calling for are in line. I can't even remember the names of the guys who got starts, but they are all out of the way now. Will it make a difference? Time will tell.

Article: Twins Make Cuts, Name Starters
stringer bell replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Actually, if Hicks or Rosario push someone out, I'm guessing it will be Schafer. I would expect Robinson to get most starts vs. lefties. That would be a little more consistent than what he saw with the Cards. I don't expect miracles, but I don't expect him to be an embarrassment either.- 71 replies

Article: Twins Make Cuts, Name Starters
stringer bell replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Because, on average, he will start between one and two games a week in center. Shane Robinson is a role player with the 2015 Twins. He'll start against most left handers in center, pinch run and be a late-inning defensive replacement. If you want Rosario or Hicks for that role, you are sacrificing their future development and adding service time while they mostly sit on the bench.- 71 replies

Twins Reduce Clarity With Roster Cuts
stringer bell commented on Ted Schwerzler's blog entry in Off The Baggy
Hicks springboarded back to the majors and hit .348/.300/.648, which told me that he still had work to do offensively to be a major league regular. His time in winter ball and this spring have yielded similar numbers. If any move would sound like "scholarship", it would be to anoint Hicks as the regular center fielder with the results he has put up. If we are talking about bringing Hicks north instead of Robinson, with the assumption that he platoons in center, then the questions are whether Hicks is a good fit for the role and what it will do for his development as a player. IMHO, Robinson definitely fits the role better, despite not having nearly the tools of Aaron Hicks. -
Today the posts have mostly been negative with three young players optioned to AAA. Many have pointed out that the rebuilding Twins won't have a single rookie from their system on the 25-man roster going north. The average age of the team won't be considerably different. Despite all of this, I'm optimistic that the Twins will improve. The next wave is very close and they could provide a real boost. I have predicted/advocated for Hicks to be demoted since the end of the regular season and while Schafer/Robinson isn't optimum, the better of Hicks or Rosario should be ready before mid-season. The pitching rotation will be better. Any regression from Hughes should be matched by regression for Nolasco. I think Gibson will be really good and Santana will be the best #4 starter the Twins have had since the 90s. I hope the leash isn't long for the bullpen. I have predicted 85 wins, really against all odds. I think there is enough talent there to improve even though the division will be tough. It will take filling of inside straights and rolling sevens, but I'm sticking with 85 wins, with or without Meyer, May, Rosario or Hicks and a bunch of relievers.
