Twins 2023 Position Analysis: Third Base
umterp23 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Right now, nothing to judge him on really since he can't throw the ball. Hopefully he is taking reps on fielding the ball with no throws to get further settled at the fielding piece. Negative for me is sore arm for S/T. We don't know what we will get until he truly is on the field. Same for Buxton and Polanco. Walking wounded and slow ramp up is not a spot to be in for anyone- 14 replies

Twins 2023 Position Analysis: Catcher
umterp23 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Article makes Jeffers look like he is always on the IL but one stint because of a freak wild pitch in the dirt during a warmup session breaks his thumb. He played through such break for almost 2 weeks and was hot with the bat at the time plus trying to throw a ball. So one stint and people think he is buxton part 2. Jeffers is playing pretty well in S/T and has out-performed Vasquez the anointed the savior the position. Now the arguments from readers will be that it is only S/T performance and Jeffers still is awful. Well, if it is only S/T then Vasquez who was "sick" to start game play and has masterfully hit .077 thus far. Twins have depth with these two guys and Farmer as emergency, so we are good for now. Let's not forget that Jeffers self taught himself to be a catcher and didn't have a dedicated coach till getting drafted. The twins don't seem to be to worried about throwing guys out, when you put the guy in such an awkward catching position that is flexible with blocking balls or throwing runners out. He did throw someone out yesterday so maybe seeing his confidence will grow seeing him get a guy. 25 years old, calls a good game, solid receiver and guys like to pitch to him. Mgmt will play the guys equally and not tax either one. If Jeffers we aren't stuck when he plays unlike what most readers think. -
Celestino Injured—Possible 40-man vacancy
umterp23 replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Celestino isn't on target to make the 26 man roster, destined to AAA, so there is no concern, outfield depth is already established and he really needs to play everyday at AAA. He is break the glass emergency player and if we break the glass then our OF is in shambles and we are out of contention. Sucks he got injured, but he has plenty of time to have an extended spring training and rehab to get back to AAA. -
Kyle Farmer Can Be a Crucial Fit for the Twins
umterp23 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Will always root for the guy who loves the game 24/7. Farmer seems to be that type of guy. Position flexibility, will do what is asked when asked, prepares for any situation and is healthy. Is he the front line star? No, but he doesn't have to be and he knows that. Pencil his name in the lineup and I won't be disappointed. -
Twins Add Infield Depth, Sign Veteran Donovan Solano
umterp23 replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is a solid move for multiple reasons: Austin, Lee, Julien and Lewis won't be on opening day roster for various reasons: still coming back from injury, haven't played above AA, everyday at bats at AAA are needed vs once a week at bats in bigs. Solano isn't blocking the youth as some seem to speculate. Larnach and Kiriloff most likely will be at AAA to start the season, as I don't believe Kiriloff will be able to ramp up without a setback (hate to think it but not sold on his wrist, especially if he has stated he is still working on getting comfortable). Celestino isn't in the mix for 4th or even 5th OF. If Kiriloff isn't ready, Miranda will be back at 1st and Farmer/Solano will rotate at 3b. Paddack to 60 day IL shortly as he may not be back till late summer at best. -
What no Pagan? Worst 10 pitches list would be interesting to see.

Ranking the Most Improved AL Central Teams for 2023
umterp23 replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
On paper means nothing, on field results dictates everything. Injuries will happen, how do the Twins respond? Buxton's value is playing CF and not every other day DH role. If he plays 80 games or less in the field, than we have problems. We have plenty of guys to get DH at bats, so Buxton needs to be "the Man" in the OF they way everybody believe he is today. Solid up the middle if Buxton, Correa and Polanco give us 120+ games in the field together. We have a solid 2-man Catching tandem so I'm good there. Farmer, Gordon, Gallo/Kepler off the bench depending on the days is a decent group. Gordon has a chance to be a cornerstone guy for next couple years if he can replicate last year. Team doesn't have to all hit for power to win games, unlike many who believe each guy needs to belt 20+ HR's. Timely HR's are more effective. Base hits, hit and run, Sb's, move the guys over, apply pressure on opposing teams defense wins games more often that a ooh-ahh 440' upper deck solo HR. But, hey I'm an old school guy Pitching, still a little luke warm on BP and how many arms we will need to go innings 6-9 on a daily basis. Rotation looks to be stable. Let the games begin- 29 replies

Pagan and low leverage situations was the mantra last year after he blew lead after lead vs Cleveland. Pagan in mop up duty in potential blowouts is the maximum exposure we should be seeing him in. Sure hope he proves me wrong, just don't see it happening.

Realistic Goals for Twins Hitters in 2023
umterp23 commented on Harrison Smith's blog entry in Harrison Smith’s Blog
Buxton's value is not playing 80 games in CF, it's playing 100-120 games in CF and an occasional DH role. We keep hearing how great a defender he is and he has shown that skill set but he isn't top 10 in the league guy playing 33% of his games at DH. -
The Twins Forgotten Center Fielder
umterp23 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Saying Celestino is an Elite CF, makes me laugh as a joint reference with Taylor. Night and day difference from a fielding perspective. If he has value, you move him to get something back. With the potential that other almost here prospects may switch to OF and potentially CF, then Celestino at best is 5th OF on the roster. Needs more aging at AAA and not sure he should even be called up during the year. Young sure, but Elite not so fast. -
The Twins Need to be Realistic With Max Kepler
umterp23 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree on win now mode but living in Pittsburgh, the Pirates are never in win now mode, they like to gather young assets and preach to the masses that they are building for the future. What they build in grooming assets to then trade them away for younger assets, thus the never ending 5 year plan to competitiveness. That's why it is always Steelers Country, then Penguins, the Pirates on Firework Night and when they host really good teams- 70 replies

The Twins Need to be Realistic With Max Kepler
umterp23 replied to Cody Pirkl's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would still move him and send him to Pirates who start their 5-year plan over each year. Kepler is at best a 4th OF on the team vs Lefties and maybe a 3rd OF vs Righties and that's a strong maybe in my opinion.- 70 replies

Who Leads Off for the 2023 Minnesota Twins?
umterp23 replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Buxton isn't a 3, 4, 5 hole hitter as he is pretty dreadful with RISP. I would put him in the 1 hole to start and see how it works. Gallo in the 1 hole is very tempting for two reasons: 1 he is no longer a Yankee/Dodger where the pressure to perform for WS contender was damning to his success. I think a change of scenery will be very beneficial for him to relax, enjoy the game, no pressure to be the guy so to speak. 2nd is that he does have a knack to get on base and I'd be surprised if his K rate is as higher or higher because of reason #1. Rooting for the guy to succeed and I think he will. Go Twins!- 29 replies

Who Will Be the Twins' Opening Day DH?
umterp23 replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There have been multiple negatives that Miranda isn't good on defense and is a bat-first young kid and that Lewis, Lee, etc are better. They might very well be. With that being said why not go back to the Marlins and offer the following below. Farmer can play 3rd and we can dump Pagan at the same time.- 60 replies

I'd take a swing with Profar to give us a switch hitting LF. With Arraez gone in the 3 for 1 trade which I like, the trade does free us up for player balance and ab's across the IF. I would package Kepler, Celestino and any other high end AAA prospect to get one more Pitching arm. OF: Profar, Buxton, Gallo and Gordon IF: Farmer, Correa, Polanco, Miranda C: Vasquez, Jeffers 3 bench players: Larnach, Kiriloff and a spring training surprise to fill out the roster. Granted this has us banking on Kiriloff being healthy along with Larnach finding his stroke. Kepler if he is traded, will need to bring back a pitching arm but not sure he gets moved at this point. I can hear the TD fan base screaming where is the power with Profar and OF. Power game is overrated, not all guys on roster need to blast 20 HR's to be considered worthy of a roster spot. Fundamental baseball is backbone to a good team along with quality/consistent pitching. 2022 playoff teams: Tampa Bay 139 HR's (25th ranked) and Guardians 127 (29th ranked) and Padres 151 (21st ranked). On the flip side those three teams with pitching, focused on ERA: Tampa Bay 3.41 (4th Ranked), Guardians 3.47 (6th ranked) and Padres 3.81 (11th ranked). Pitching & Defense. HR's are sexy and create ooh-aah moments but not mandatory to win. Granted Houston had it all last year ranked 4th in HR's and 2nd in ERA. Go Twins

Celestino just because he is a righty swinger shouldn't be considered a roster spot/lock at the big level. He is a light hitting righty who plays marginal defense. Gordon and Farmer are you utility guys and Gordon gets playing time in OF.

Cant wait for the MLBPA to get involved and complain about one of theirs not getting the best deal agreed to. They will talk the narrative that the owners are starting a collusion tactic. Boras will point to himself as the agent of all agents and they are just screwing me. Good times, happy money for Boras and Correa and they still are waiting.
-
Another week and another correa would of, could of, should of story. The rinse cycle repeat is old. At this point, there is no way I would even come close to offer anything beyond 5 years for a contract. 5/$142.5 with Correa having an opt out after year 3 and Twins have trade no trade through 3 years and can have limited trade options in year 4 and full trade if he doesn't opt out. That takes to what age 33. You can structure the annual numbers to allow him to make more money in the first 3 years and reduced rate for final two. Opt out has to have some performance values added in so that he just doesn't walk because he wants to walk. Boras will never go with it but buyer beware since Correa chose to move on after year one. If he had stayed through his 3 years, he would be sitting pretty if Mets/Giants truly do walk away. Move on - Go Twins

Again? The Twins Lose Carlos Correa to the Mets.
umterp23 replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Twins didn't lose out to Correa again per the title of this article. Correa and Boras had a plan that didn't involve the Twins this year or any future year. Twins aren't WS contenders and Correa wants more ring opportunities and a really big contract to boot. Twins can't provide the complete package. Correa said all the right things about the Twins to leave on a warm and fuzzy feeling. Twins on the other hand really needed to move on from Correa sooner than later and be "aggressive" in the market. Twins and FA spending aggressive can always be debated. Mets have an aggressive owner who will spend no matter what and doesn't give a you know what about luxury tax, truly means nothing to the ownership group. They are 2nd fiddle to the Yankees and now they want to buy their way to being top dog in the Big Apple. Good for them and Correa, the move is comical and just shows how broken MLB system is. Big dogs will almost always be big dogs and on occasion the lower end markets will catch lightning in a bottle and give the big F.U. to the big spenders at year end. Happy Holidays and my Xmas wish is now please move on from Correa articles. -
Maybe it isn't physical but a chemical issue. Privacy concerns won't be released so to speak but would be very interesting if he "accidentally" took something he shouldn't during his fall/winter workouts to get ready for next year. He could then hang out the Tatis Jr and share stories on how they got caught. Happy Holidays
-
He isn't worth the money for that length of a contract. Boras and Carlos got what they wanted and it was never the Twins that would give it to him. He isn't worth the payday that he got, so no big loss. He wasn't going to resign here so all good. Twins FO will use the money as they see fit whether it's what we want.

Byron Buxton Did the Twins a Favor
umterp23 replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Very fair deal for Buxton and the Twins. He is an outfielder and needs to be in the OF 80% of his playing time at a minimum. DH on occasion is a bonus. His true worth for the twins has be more defense the what we got this year and limit the Celestino impact. Gordon helps in other spots but Celestino doesn't warrant a full time roster spot at the Bigs level -
Judge contract = ceiling for Correa deal?
umterp23 replied to VivaBomboRivera!'s topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I live in Pittsburgh and the Pirates are a minor league caliber team playing in a major league stadium. Owner cares about bottom line as a business and has no desire to invest in the team for a championship level competitor. Hell he really doesn't care if they play .500 baseball as long as he makes his money. The Pirates Fan has a window of mid-June to late July each year where a fan may care (Hockey if the Penguins are in playoffs covers the start of the season and Steeler with training camp and actual season covers the backend). Fun stadium to watch a baseball game when a really good team comes to town. Other than that, $16 for a 16 oz beer and $5 hotdog aren't worth it. The seats prices are pretty fair and they run some specials, but they only get maybe 1/3rd in attendance each night. Each year the running joke is they start a new 5 year plan on competitiveness. They never make it to year 2 of the plan.
