  1. I think it's wise to let him reach Free Agency. If they decide they want him beyond this year after the season, I doubt his value will increase greatly. With our impending middle infield depth, it's worth the gamble.
  2. Sounds like his BB rate, fly ball rate & launch angle all jumped significantly last season, leading to the power surge. If this truly signals a philosophical change that he can stick to, perhaps he can sustain his production. An OPS of .868 is nothing to sneeze at.
  3. Except for the March 27th opt out date, I would assume this would be a move to give Gordon a chance to repeat at least the beginning of the season @ AA. Not sure if Aybar would accept assignment to Rochester though.
  4. I get your point, truly I do. But even if he is trending downward, he still has a long way to fall to be on par with our current #3, Kyle Gibson. Don't know why the Rays took the deal, but am sure excited that they did.
  5. Can't believe the number of people ho-humming this deal. Odorizzi is the most polished, in-his-prime starting pitcher we've acquired since Ervin. He's averaged 30-starts and 165-innings over four years, while consistently keeping his team in games. He cost us our #4 prospect at SS, not our #4 overall. Is he a lock-down #1 starter? Obviously not, but realistically we're gonna have to develop that for ourselves, like almost everyone else. At worst, this allows the Twins time to continue to polish the next wave like Gonsalves, Romero, Slegers, Jose, Littel & yes even Stewart. Patience paid off, Falvine. Good job!
  6. I think it would be pointless for the Twins to spend millions in dollars or prospects for anyone who doesn't slot in as staff ace. I only see three possibilities to do that now. Chris Archer - Would definitely cost Kepler and at least a couple high-value prospects. Not ideal. Jake Arietta - Maybe for a high dollar 1-year deal to prove his value, but I think there's a reason the Cubs have barely spoken to him and gave his money to Darvish. Zach Greinke - Owed $138.5mil over the next four years, I think the Twins would have to commit to at least 100 of that but he could probably be had for a less than expected return. Maybe Gordon and a lesser prospect. Otherwise they're probably better off taking a chance on someone like Tillman on the cheap and seeing what the new regime's changes to our pitching development operations can produce in year #2.
  7. I'm warming up to this idea. What's Kemp's health like? He's supposed to be a defensive liability, but has only played 14 career games at DH. Maybe keeping the glove in his locker would boost his bat a bit. The Twins were allegedly enamored with Alvarez and Lux of the Dodgers in the failed Dozier talks. Would eating the $35mil or so he's owed over the next two years net one of them in return? A risk? Sure but what isn't these days.
  8. Was wondering if MIguel Cabrera was a potential salary dump pick-up for a DH/RH Bat candidate, until I saw he has a minimum 6-years and $184mil remaining on his contract. OUCH!!!
  9. I can't speak to the intangibles like leadership qualities, but I'd save the money and go with Kennys, Granite & Grossman to start the season. Save the dollars for an in-season upgrade, if necessary.
  10. No chance I'm giving up Sano yet. Admittedly, it's looking less and less likely that he'll ever make the real commitment needed to become the elite player that he has the potential of becoming. But because of that potential, he's still untouchable in my book.
  11. If the Twins whiff on Darvish, would it make sense to see how badly other clubs want to unload cumbersome remaining contracts on established pitchers rather than go $100mil or more on guys like Arrietta, Cobb or Lynn? Samardja & Cueto would be slighty over $20mil /season for 3 & 4 years respectively. Greinke would run about $30 for four years. I'm sure the DBacks & Giants would pick up some of that, depending on the return. The Tigers got three very good, but very young prospects for Verlander during the pennant drive and are still paying nearly a third of his remaining salary. I'm just wondering with Yu & Arietta expected to net deals in the 5/$150 range and Cobb & Lynn around 5/$100, would it make more sense to limit our commitment duration by assuming an existing pact?
  12. I'm not so sure. $20mil is the high end for his two arb years. $20-28 for the two years that follow would be low, assuming he continues to pitch at or above his current level. However, if he has a Rotator Cuff injury, a UCL tear or Thoracic Outlet Syndrome occur in the next two years, he could only dream of that kind of money. Archer sold his arb & early FA years for a lot less than that.
  13. I do Cole for Gordon, Jay & Granite in a heartbeat. Offer Cole a deal in the 4-year / $40-48mil range and buy out his remaining remaining two arb years & first two years of FA. The guy could be a horse.
  14. MLB had Pearson rated #6 on the Angels prospect board and Banuelos #10 for the Mariners. Though both are still years away, it seems like a hell of a haul, which came at essentially no cost to the Twins. If I understand correctly, the Twins merely gave up the rights to spend $2mil, not the actual money right? We end up getting two players who received a combined $1.3mil in bonuses just 6 months ago for nada. If someone offered me the opportunity to either buy a $2mil home or have a $1.3mil abode for free, I think I know which option I'd choose.
  15. Agreed. I don't care what kind of positive influence he is in the clubhouse. As a whole, our shabby pitching staff is worse when he catches & he is once again below the Mendoza Line at the plate. It makes zero sense to leave a 26-year old Mitch Garver languishing in AAA in favor of Gimenez. He needs to get his feet wet now in order to serve as our RH half of a catching platoon for next year and beyond.
  16. Deal Kintzler for the best offer and get Curtiss up to close right now. He's hot and we need to see what he's got. A veteran closer is a luxury we can't afford right now, particularly one who will be a FA in two months.
  17. Bottom line is we flipped a 19-year old Rookie league arm and about $4mil for two pitchers who will compete for MLB roster spots next spring. Ennis may get a shot this year. Perhaps he's a been a bit old at each level that he's pitched, but his career MiLB ERA is 1.89, with more than 1 K/Inn. Conversely, Little has always been on the young side, but has gotten better with every step up the ladder. At this point, I think it's all about adding better quality depth at the upper levels. These two are definitely a step in that direction.
  18. Would Polanco & a lower-tier pitcher be enough to rent Cozart? If he likes it here and does well, he might re-sign fairly reasonably. The FA demand for SS's this winter doesn't look too ripe. I like the idea of moving Gordon in a bigger off-season deal and using Cozart as a bridge to Palacios, Javier, Lewis or whomever.
  19. I'm fine with Palka. He's been playing rehab in the Gulf League, and perhaps clearing him medically is what is holding this deal up.
  20. Strictly a guess, but I'll say Alex Robinson or Sam Clay. I think Andrew Vasquez (who we'd better keep) has made either of these loogie relievers expendable.
  21. How about Vargas for Bautista? Hell, take on Liriano's salary as well. Maybe a homecoming would be just what he needs. Show's the team and fans that we're willing to bring in veterans who've had success to help lead the youngsters forward through 2017. No long term commitment, and we might catch lightning in a bottle.
  22. According to Lewis, he was shocked when he heard his name first. Now it's possible the Twins had an agreement in place with his agent, but wouldn't he have cleared it with Lewis and his family first?
  23. I'm very encouraged by Stewart's run since returning from the DL. 17-innings with only 2 earned runs , a WHIP under 1.00 and a 3:1 K/BB ratio. Not holding my breath, but it's a start.
