Can we trade Kirilloff's injured wrist for Sano's good wrist and then send Sano down for a rehab assignment until June while Kirilloff takes over first base? it's still early - I would keep Sano in the lineup for at least the rest of this month but start planning for a possible replacement. This is really Sano's prove it year - he came in better shape - we have to hope something connects like the bat with the ball.

Sherry's Series Takes: Twins vs. Dodgers
wavedog replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I heard PETB - People for Ethical treatment of Bats has filed a complaint against Sano for breaking his bat. In a statement released by PETB "It was not the bats fault Sano can't swing and make contact and stood looking at strike 3 down the middle of the plate. There was no excuse and we are shocked and horrified for such a violent treatment against an innocent bat. Bats have feelings too."- 8 replies

Game Score: Dodgers 7, Twins 0
wavedog replied to Thiéres Rabelo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I was pretty much enjoying the season - outside of Duffey's blown save - until the 8th inning last night. Now I am having flashbacks to the 2021 Minnesota Twins. At least Shoemaker and Happ are no longer in our rotation. Here's hoping to brighter days ahead!- 42 replies

Grading the Twins Offseason
wavedog replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I will go with a C-/D+ with the grade saved by the Correa signing (perhaps only for one year) and the Sonny Gray trade. We did not sign one of the many top SP arms in Free Agency or pick up a top tier reliever. We still have and even added to the glut of position players who are best served as DH's - Sano, Sanchez, Arraez, Larnach, Rooker. We greatly weakened the Catcher position and did not address an OF platoon option that would allow Kepler to sit against LHP.- 34 replies

Wow! Correa was my dream choice for FA signing but never thought we could pull that off. Kudos to the FO for pulling it off. Our right-side of the infield suddenly looks tons better with Correa and Urshela.

Twins 2022 Position Analysis: Catcher
wavedog replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I will cheer for anyone in a Twins Uni but Gary Sanchez will really put that to a test. Realize all the moves are not done yet so I will put that caveat out there - but if you took all of our offseason blueprints and compared to where we stand today - I don't think anyone would have submitted this blueprint. Realize we have plenty of dollars in the budget to spend but we are running out of players to spend it on.- 34 replies

4 Things We Know After the Stunning Twins-Yankees Trade
wavedog replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Personally I would rather not overpay for Story in $ or years - I just don't see him as a Franchise type player to be the face of the franchise with a big contract. Since we have payroll flexibility I would rather see us swallow a bad 1 or 2 year contract in return for getting some additional players with longer term value and not surrendering any of our top prospects. Looking like this year is about player development and evaluation and maybe we can make a better push next year.- 120 replies

Generally an optimistic person but well I don't know what to think now - had the 24 hours of picturing Kiner-Falefa playing SS for us. Hopefully we find a SS. Also hoping Urshela performs but really would prefer not to see Sanchez play for the Twins but I guess we need someone to split catching duties with Jeffers.

Sorry to see Garver go, but this certainly does fill a gap we needed and keeps Polanco at 2B. Of course signing Story would have done the same thing and we would have kept Garver. Not sure what we will spend our remaining budget on. looks like we will be finishing in the draft lottery territory for 2023. One more thing on the trade, I live down here in Texas Ranger land and Kiner-Falefa was a fan favorite - plays with some fire something I think the team was lacking in last year - not sure that translates into any more wins but maybe more enjoyable to watch.

Second Deadline Passes, Still No Deal
wavedog replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
May not be 50/50, but I will blame both parties for not reaching a labor agreement. Solutions presented don't even really address pay versus performance inequities and the games themselves becoming less interesting to watch. I won't waste any more time discussing that subject - if they play I will watch if not I'll find something else to do. As long as the regular season is delayed/postponed/cancelled we can replace the cancelled games with game by game reviews of either the 1987 or 1991 seasons - instead of actual game #1 this year we replace with review of Game #1 of 1991 for example. At least that way we are guaranteed to win the World Series at the end of the season ? -
Thanks for the article - I have no recollection of Walter Bond - that was before my baseball following time. I don't remember Herman Hill playing either although I just double-checked and I have the baseball card of Herman that is shown in the article. Didn't realize he had died down in Venezuela. Bostock, I do remember and what a great hitter he was for the Twins. Was sorry to see him go to the Angels but then we would not pay much for players back then so it was not surprising. Sorry that all these men died so young.

He will fit right in with many of our other players who struggle making consistent contact with the ball both at the plate and in the field. I was actually hoping for the opposite - a RH hitting outfielder who can make contact, hit lefties and can field so they could mix and match with Kepler. Someone like the first-half season Refsnyder.

A Letter to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred
wavedog replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
On the owners side if they are not up for more of a revenue sharing plan then I would think they could lower the salary cap (while increasing penalties for going over) and raise the floor to lower the spending gap between teams. My suggestion on the player side would be a funding tax based on each teams payroll there the proceeds would be disbursed each year to the players that are outperforming their salary to help prop up the younger players earnings until they can get to free agency. The NFL has a smaller version of this. Using the current structure and if the players under the union proposal can reach free agency faster this is only going to help the large spending teams get the best players in more of their prime years so there needs to be a more broad solution. -
The Question: To Tender or Not To Tender

This is wonderful news to hear - kudos to Buxton for signing this deal and the Twins for getting it done. Since both signings were announced today would you rather have Buxton signing for 7 years and $100M (plus incentives) for his age 28-34 seasons or Marcus Simien signing for 7 years and $175M at his age 31-37 seasons?

Does Seiya Suzuki Fit in Minnesota?
wavedog replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
An outfielder who can hit and field? No we try to get rid of those types. We prefer them to only have one of those skills or neither as long as they are cheap we are good. Joking of course - yes we could use a right-hand hitting outfielder who can field but not sure we would allocate a portion of our budget for that. Would open the possibility of trading some of our other outfielders for pitching. -
He would not be my first choice or 2nd - but I can see it happening and I would not hate it. First try to sign one of the big guys (for me Correa would be my choice) then when that likely will fail - try for Galvis or Iglesias on a short-term deal. If that doesn't work out then Simmons. I know he made some head-scratching plays on defense but he also made difficult plays look easy and is our best defensive option. If he comes back you have to hope his hitting picks up and if not DFA him or trade him and trial some of our other young candidates who hopefully one of them will step up next year. His hitting was frustrating last year - could not even bunt well.
-
A nice thought provoking proposal. I am a little concerned with the hit to the defense by losing Donaldson and Buxton and Baez is probably not that good either. I might take the Baez money and sign a cheaper better defensive SS and flow the rest of the dollars to the bullpen and OF. I don't want to count on Larnach and Rooker as OF options next year - let them get some more AAA time. Also want to sit Kepler against lefties as well so need to roster an outfielder that can play CF and hit lefties - like Buxton - lol! I would keep him. In the bullpen maybe keep Rogers and add Iglesias

Twins Fans Living Vicariously Through Rosario
wavedog replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I feel it was the correct decision to let Eddie go for this season at what it would have cost and with Kirilloff, Larnach and Arraez to try in the OF which makes it that much easier to root for his success in the postseason this year. No bitterness. It is always entertaining to watch him play, the good and the bad but now the bad doesn't hurt as much and the good is enjoyable. -
I was rooting for Tampa Bay and San Francisco to go to the World Series so going to be tough to watch either of these series. The story in the AL - who can cheat better? Boston somehow plays "clutch" when Cora is managing and Baker always seems to have tough defeats in the playoffs so I will go with Boston winning in 7 although Houston should be favored. NLCS Atlanta vs LA Dodgers - another tough one to pick a team to root for as both teams have been in the playoffs a bunch. Atlanta has Eddie Rosario so I'll root for them although the Dodgers should be heavily favored and always seems to beat Atl. Dodgers in 5 seems about right.

Scouting Twins Prospects: Gilberto Celestino
wavedog replied to Lucas Seehafer PT's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Excited to see what Celestino can do next year. He was quite awful when brought up this year on both offense and defense fully considering the jump he made but I was encouraged how he performed in in AAA. I definately want to keep Buxton and I also favor keeping a good fielder with speed as the 4th OF over a plodding OF slugger that has difficulty making contact such as Rooker. It seems we could also use a RH platoon for Kepler - don't know how Celestino hits lefties. I should clarify that I feel the Twins could use an outfielder that can field well to backup all OF positions and hit lefties to spell Kepler and am hoping Celestino progresses to that role next year. Fine if he starts in AAA and earns his way up. Want to make sure he gets enough at-bats so he can continue to develop. -
Game Score: Twins 4, White Sox 3
wavedog replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
As bad as Monday nights game was - this one was wonderful to watch. Nice to see Jax come through with a good game and the bullpen also delivered. Kudos to Astudillo for the home run and nice defensive play. I thought it was a bit strange to pinch-hit for him in the 8th - I guess Polanco was coming in for defense anyway and prefer to have him hit than Astudillo - even after he homered and just made a nice defensive play? But after Polanco singled then Kepler came up facing the lefty and struck out so I guess we were hoping Polanco would have homered? Could have let Astudillo hit and have Polanco hit for Kepler if Astudillo got on which would have necessitated putting Larnach in the OF in the 9th weakening the OF defense. -
Game Score: Tigers 6, Twins 5
wavedog replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Bullpen blowing a 9th inning lead 2 nights in a row is such a 2021 Twins move. Both unbelievable but very believable at the same time At this point Robles and Colome just need to be let go and give some tryouts to prospects. I was also frustrated by the 10th inning at-bats of Kepler and Sano. Sano was swinging to hit a grand slam when all we needed was a soft single. Is anyone counseling the players on strategy or are they just not listening? In either case that is an issue that needs to be corrected. I also would have kept Gordon in the game rather than pinch-hitting Larnach - although both are struggling of late Gordon can make something happen with his speed. -
Game Recap: White Sox 4, Twins 1
wavedog replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Great pitching effort by Berrios - he did have the 2 walks in the 2nd but was not helped by the defense. The Jeffers error should have been charged to Simmons - Jeffers threw the ball to Simmons and I think Simmons thought he was playing soccer and couldn't use his hands. This game just continue the story of the season, untimely errors on defense, no clutch hitting - especially in the 2nd when we could have answered those 2 runs and in the 6th inning when we were gifted a couple of hits but struck out again stranding runners. Then the cherry on top is bringing Colome in and he gives up 2 runs with the help of another Simmons error. First pitch from Colome was a fat slow strike that was tagged for a double. -
I can see him potentially as a 4th outfielder/platoon ie upgrade over Cave. With our current OF situation he is our best defender outside of Buxton which has value.
