Article: 10 Relievers Minnesota Could Target
SomeGuy replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I like Stroman too, a little bit of an injury history but I'm on board. Toronto is in an interesting position though with that extra year of control. They have hardly any financial commitments and the clock is started on Vlad Jr. Would they already be looking at 2020 to make some noise with Vlad Jr and possibly Bo Bichette? 2021 is probably more realistic but they might have something to think about. -

They are very likely to move him but it sounds like its going to take a big overpay to get him. It is telling that even the Yankees with a clear need for starting pitching "might not be enamored enough with him to pay the necessary price" according to MLB.com. The Giants are saying that they aren't going to settle for an offer they don't like. They don't absolutely have to move him either. Easy Qualifying Offer candidate, could re-sign him too since he is "their guy". San Fran has needed a large scale rebuild for a few years now and they have been dead set on buying their way out of it, re-signing him isn't that far-fetched. Maybe the new GM will operate differently or maybe its the owners that keep saying fix the team we have. -

The Diamondbacks have the 3rd best run differential in the NL. Plus no team in MLB has played more games against teams above .500 than them. A wild card seems well within their sights especially if their schedule evens out. I think they need to go for it unless things change drastically. -

Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic on Bumgarner's asking price. “From what industry sources are telling me, Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi already has had a dialogue with some contenders, including the New York Yankees, and he made it clear the Giants will not treat Bumgarner as a yard-sale item that must be cleared off the driveway before moving day,” Baggarly writes. “The Giants will get the value they are seeking or they won’t move him.” -

Article: Craig Kimbrel and Risk Tolerance
SomeGuy replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Pressly was pretty good at times with the Twins but not in the same ballpark as he has been at all times with Houston. Pressly himself credits Houston with unlocking his potential. Its a night and day difference. Hopefully the Twins analytics gets there and this case seems to have amplified our efforts to catch up to these teams. The newest Astro was open to input. With the Twins, he had wondered, “Why is it not clicking for me?” Now someone was offering answers. And it wasn’t just anyone; it was the Astros, who had won the World Series the year before and had a history of acquiring and improving much more accomplished pitchers, including former Tigers ace Justin Verlander, the best AL pitcher of his era. “I was just curious to see if this works. … It’s like, maybe I should pay attention over here,” Pressly says. -

Houston made Pressly into the elite pitcher he is now. He would not be performing at this level if he was still with us. His track record with us 2016 3.70 ERA 3.74 FIP 2017 4.70 ERA 4.36 FIP 2018 3.40 ERA 2.95 FIP with Houston 2018 0.70 ERA 1.49 FIP 2019 0.93 ERA 2.25 FIP No more than fifteen minutes after he finished unpacking in the clubhouse, Pressly was summoned into a meeting. In attendance were Astros pitching coach Brent Strom, bullpen coach Doug White, and multiple analysts from the front office. The Astros, Pressly learned, had a plan for him to be better, and the analysts launched into the details. “They sat me down and they put up all these x, y charts and all this other stuff,” Pressly says. “It almost sounded like they were speaking in a different language. https://www.theringer.com/mlb/2019/6/3/18644512/mvp-machine-how-houston-astros-became-great-scouting -
Article: Miguel Sano: A Fading Superstar
SomeGuy replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Not even a mention of the injury that ended his all star season. He is still recovering from the fallout of that metal rod in his leg and the long inactive recovery period. Not a mention of the injury that cost him the beginning of this season. Then the blog brushes aside his strong season line of .250/.348/.625 as if it is only decent and he is in decline. His stat line is currently better than his career line and his all star 2017 season. I guess some people just want to write him off. He is performing extremely well and I don't think we have seen his best yet.- 114 replies

Article: The Best Twins Team Since...
SomeGuy replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The easy schedule should be pointed out. 20 of our 54 games (37%) have been against teams with a record of .500 or better. We are currently 10-10 in those games (7-8 excluding the Indians). That and how early it is, I would say it is only safe to say the best team since 2010. -
It seems like OBP is an area he could address. He leads the team in chase%. Until he takes more pitches, the strategy should be to throw him junk and watch him make weak contact. He is also last on the team in exit velocity so it is probably unlikely that power or BABIP are coming. I think its a glaring weakness in his game right now and a AAA stint would probably do him good.

Throw in the fact that the one that is statistically worse is the only one with options remaining. How can Astudillo ever hope to compete in stats like OBP and OPS when he is not going to draw any walks? It should be obvious that he will continue to be a low OBP/OPS guy going forward.

A 50-50 split should keep both plenty fresh for the entire season. Astudillo is a utility bench guy on a team with 2 other utility bench guys. Compared to the other utility bench guys, Astudillos value is at catcher and not IF/OF. We don't need to roster 3 catchers just like we don't need 3 utility bench players.

Just the nickname implying that he has the speed of a turtle should tell you how capable he is in the field. I will give him props he has stepped into any position we asked and not been a liability but he isn't the best choice at any of the positions. He could field these positions if needed and right now with the way he is hitting plus our other options probably having more range at the same positions, it is not needed. Hasn't most of his "versatility" come from us trying to fit his bat into the lineup. Right now there is no need to find him at bats. Gonzalez and Adrianza should be viewed as the superior defenders (and hitters).

They won't need to carry 3 catchers. Castro can step into a bigger role if needed. Garver shouldn't be activated if he can't physically handle at least a backup role as catcher. Astudillo is worse with the bat than Adrianza, and Gonzalez plus they offer plenty of defensive versatility themselves. No brainer IMO.

Adrianza .231/.333/.397 (.731OPS) 96 wRC+ Astudillo .264/.276/.396 (.671 OPS) 70 wRC+ (worst OPS and wRC+ on team, only Twins hitter with negative WAR) Once/if the Twins are fully healthy I think the roster pinch solution is pretty obvious. Astudillo is currently the worst hitter on the roster. Whether he is reluctant to take a pitch or just that bad at pitch recognition, he needs to make some changes. Once Garver is activated (possibly this weekend), I would send Astudillo down and continue to give Arraez as many at bats as possible from a bench role.

He is still feeling it in his wrist and they would rather let him get to 100%. Do-Hyoung Park Nelson Cruz, whose left wrist is still sore but improving, continues to be cautious with his recovery and noted that the Twins' current success at the plate helps him avoid pushing his recovery timeline. The Twins did not plan to have Cruz hit again on Saturday or Sunday. "I don't want it to be something I'm dealing with all year long," Cruz said. "I want to make sure when I go out there it's 100 percent. Only when I'm swinging."

Twins Get Their First Taste of What Playoff Baseball Feels Like

A Scherzer deal would be something like Royce Lewis, 2 others from our top 30 prospects, we pay full salary for Max, and probably more still. A 1 for 1 would be accepted 0 of 100 times from Washington's perspective. You dont trade 2.5 years of the best pitcher in baseball for 1 low minors prospect. Vlad jr wouldn't get Max 1 for 1. But Scherzer is not for sale and wont be at any point this season.

Wheeler, Grienke, Ray, Gray and amazingly Minor are all on competing teams. Stroman is the lone player from a team in a selling position at this point. I would also argue they have been as good or worse than Perez/Odorizzi so far since Odorizzi has the best ERA of the bunch, Perez is 4th (Wheeler's ERA is almost 5). But they do project to be better going forward and probably will be. And I doubt Sonny Gray is available even if Cincy does sell. They didn't sign him to an additional 3 years to trade him. Alex Wood, Tanner Roark and Jose Iglesias might be available. I believe we are on Grienke's no-trade clause as well. Not sure if he has the kind where he picks the teams every year but we were on it at one point. He would have to want to come here which might not be an issue. He has previously said he wants to be in the National League so he can bat.

I don't see Washington going into a full rebuild or seriously considering a trade for any of their core pitchers. They might sell the expiring contracts of guys like Rendon, Dozier, Kendrick and probably Doolittle (who the Twins could use). With Rendon as the only good player that they lose after this season, they will probably just regroup and try again next season. They should have at least 30M coming off the books, decline Zimmerman's option and its 50M. They could build a good team with that, especially since they won't have many glaring needs. Replace or resign Rendon and do something about the bullpen. Since their best offensive player, Trea Turner, returned from injury their offense is ranked 11th in WAR and wRC+. On the season they are 10th in pitching WAR. This is a great team on paper and might not even be out of the race this season. They have the makings to be a great team next season too, no need to blow things up.

SomeGuy replied to Andrew Gebo's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would rather have Kepler batting about 6th. Either Buxton, Polanco at 1 and 2 or just Polanco at 1. Castro can be moved way up the lineup from his usual 8th too, he has an OBP of .370 behind only Polanco and Garver. Sano should be given a long leash, like at least 2 months of poor production without any signs of a turnaround before making a move. We could bat him at the bottom of the lineup or move him to a part time role but I think he is up for the long haul now. I'm not very worried about Sano.- 39 replies

Comparing 3 games for Pineda's swinging strike% to everyone else's full season is a little misleading. But he is still very good in the category for the year(21st in MLB). Blake Snell is 19.3% compared to Pineda's 12.3% so there is a good bit of separation between the two. Pineda's best game of the year was lower than Snell's season average. I wouldn't say Pineda has Snell-like swing and miss stuff but he is similar to the Shane Bieber and Trevor Bauer marks. Interestingly enough Kyle Gibson ranks 20th in the same category with 12.4%. They are both among some elite names in the top 25. Wouldn't have expected Berrios to be 4th on our staff in swstr% (52nd in MLB, Odorizzi 34th).
