  1. Buxton's ceiling is absolutely higher, however unless his bat improves tremendously it won't play at the corner outfield positions in his later years. Sano could be a productive DH/1b OPS'ing over .900 for many more years than Buck might be in the league. No idea who ends up having the better Twins career. If I had to guess, I'd guess neither will have long Twins careers. Completely unrelated, but speaking of long careers, Trout could end up in the top ten in career WAR.
  2. I wouldn't be upset. Maybe a little surprised, but if that last spot is down to Gibby, Perez, and Thorpe, then I'd get the rationale. I think I'd personally take Perez over Thorpe, but not sure between Gibby and Thorpe. Gibby has pitched really well in Yankee stadium before. He has strikeout stuff. If they determine he can give us an inning or two, I like his chances over Thorpe's.
  3. Gibson is the longest tenured Minnesota Twin, and I love the guy. He's a terrific person, teammate, and great with the media, and he has perspective that most 31 year olds don't possess. I'll be rooting for him in the future, whether that means signing with the Twins, somewhere else, or retiring from baseball to focus on things that are more important than baseball. Regarding his pace, he works faster than Pineda and I don't hear anyone stating we shouldn't resign Pineda because he is painful to watch. I'd rather watch Gibby strike out guys slowly than watch Perez, when I turn my head and blink the other team has scored six runs.
  4. There is a correlation to max pitch speed and average pitch speed and tommy john surgeries/innings pitched. Basically, the higher the delta between a pitcher's avg fastball and his fastest fastball, the healthier that pitcher is likely to be. The best example is Verlander, who can throw 101 but seldom does and has not had TJ. Obviously JV has been incredibly durable and will be in the HOF. https://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/05/tommy-john-surgery-james-andrews-amsi-recommendations-mlb
  5. Without PED's his injury problems will be even worse. Hard pass. Plus, there's the fact that we paid him for two years and got one half a year of help.
  6. Absolutely I'm listening on Rosario for a starting pitcher. But after spending some time looking around at young controllable starters, I don't see any beneficial practical deals out there for the Twins, so the reality is that it won't happen. Free agents? Sign Pineda. Gerrit Cole, Hyun Jim Ryu, Kluber-we will be outbid. Sure, for a 1-2-3 year deal: Madbum, Zack Wheeler, Brett Anderson, Gio Gonzalez, Wade Miley, Tanner Roark Pass: Keuchel, Porcello, Hamels, Wacha, Wood Actually Keuchel or Wood on a one year deal would be okay but I don't think they'll be looking for a one year deal.
  7. I have relatives in Houston who are Astros fans and they seem to think the 'stros are pretty popular. The Astros were 6th in MLB revenue last year, behind the Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs and Giants.
  8. I personally am happy with the two deadline deals. At the beginning of the year, I thought we were 2 pen arms away from being a legitimate playoff series contender. I would have rather had Kimbrel, but Dyson and Romo are solid pieces and it does look like one or more of the AAA guys, or May, can be a shut down 6th-7th inning guy. Making a huge splash is fun, but nobody expected the Twins to do that and I'm not sure I would want the Twins to do the Greinke deal the Astros did.
  9. The Dbacks look like they did very well, depending on return for Greinke. Losing Davis hurts a little but I like this trade for the Twins. At least we did something, unlike NYY.
  10. This earlier deadline sucks. Teams are too risk averse. Mets, Giants, Dbacks all think they're buyers.
  11. Falvey and Levine hoping for significant injuries to Astros, Yankees, Indians and A's in order to be competitive this year.
  12. Farm systems don't win championships. Why are the Yankees or Twins not getting Wheeler?
  13. As surprised as I am that we don't have more pen help yet, I'm even more surprised the yankees haven't added a starter.
  14. Kinda surprised the Reds are apparently keeping Bauer. I thought they might flip him.
  15. One would certainly think so but it's the Marlins, so nothing they do makes sense.
  16. I haven't been either. But I have a feeling we'll add someone else and there will be a bunch of trades in the final hour. Otherwise I would be getting work done right now instead of writing this post...
  17. Completely unrelated from the thread, but I have mowed my lawn after dark with a headlamp before. I have also walked across the street to get my neighbor's mower and mowed my lawn with his mower (we're long time friends). Sometimes you need to get things done, so you do.
  18. We're not creating the market all by ourselves here because there are so many other buyers who need pitching too. The Cubs, Yankees, Astros, Dodgers, Red Sox, all need pitching help as well. At least we've added somebody. Yankees rotation is bad. Think about how scary good they'd be if they'd added Stroman, Thor, or Ray.
  19. Count me as one who isn't sure the Indians got better from this deal. Puig would have the lowest OPS in the Twins lineup and Reyes is basically a DH who has been worth .4 WAR this year and has Sano-like injury concerns. This will expose the Indians pen even more and their pen is not very good.
  20. I'm flabbergasted the Yankees haven't added starting pitching yet. Their rotation sucks and there are few holes in the rest of their team. I'm happy with this deadline if I'm a Mets fan. They got Stroman for hardly anything and clearly there is a lot of demand for Thor and Wheeler. They also rid themselves of Jason Vargas.
  21. Please no. I don't want him for two more years after 2019. Hard pass.
  22. Totally agree. I'd even do Lewis or Kiriloff plus anyone else (including Graterol) in the organization for Thor. But not both. The pitching scenario you describe would work in September when the roster expands, but it's hard to carry that many "starting pitchers" now. Especially with Adrianza and Gonzalez and Arraez and Schoop all on the 25 man.
