Nick I am firmly of the belief there is more coming. It will be some higher level prospects and players at the level of Headrick Prato and Isola. We will use some of the prospect capital we have built up. Nice trade on Lopez.

They may think they are selling high. It is also a situation, where they may think they still need to boost their minors. They will be competing in 2-3 years. Even still if I was a Baltimore fan, this trade seems rather light.

Well I loved waking up and seeing Ted's article saying the Twins intended to fail. It gave me a laugh. I am a fairly level headed individual but am willing to give the benefit of the doubt more than most people will. I made it very clear in June that I thought this team didn't have the pitching and that injuries would catch up to the team by the end of the summer. It was the statement that the players had outperformed expectations. Its not that the front office intended the Twins to fail, its that in their current cycle the Twins were not expected to even really be competing for a playoff spot. We were expected to be 3rd or 4th in our division at the beginning of the year. So if the Twins outperform suddenly its the front office's fault and they intended to fail? No offense I don't get the logic. I have contended the front office is trying to put the best product on the field every year, improving their depth at all levels trying to give themselves a shot over an extended time period because you never know when you can catch lightning in bottle like 87, 91 or the Braves last year. Honestly the Twins have shown some grit this year and show they have some talent. We have some younger pitchers and bats that will help keep us competitive for a while. The draft strategy of going for projectible bats at the corners, 2nd base and Outfield are starting to pay off and we are getting close to having a glut in the next year or two. It will also cause a problem with the 40 man. By my rough math we have the potential of losing 3-4 decent prospects this year if everything remains the same. The pitching pipeline actually has done fairly well this year. Ryan, Ober, Winder, and Duran have all shown they can be valuable pieces of a pitching staff. After that their is a little bit of a gap to our next set of arms coming up through the system but we are fairly well stacked and AA and down with arms that have the ability to continue to improve. This is the most young pitching we have had in the organization in over a decade. The draft strategy of looking for projectible arms at any point in the draft is really paying off and the coach at A ball on the pitching staff is doing wonders. Overall the minors system is well stacked with batters and pitchers, although the pitchers are probably about a year off before giving us another real shot at boosting the big league staff. By counting on so many young players/injury prone players - the results have been a ton of injuries. Lewis, Larnach, Kiriloff, Kepler, Buxton, Winder, Ober, Paddack is a lot of talent to lose off the team for either the rest of the season or for extended periods or giving regular rest in Buxton's case. Injuries can occur, taking on a player like Paddack was an injury waiting to happen. It was still the right decision in my decision. What I disagree with Falvey and Levine is completely ignoring the Relief Corps. I think the view Relief as an area you can always improve at the deadline if you are still in it. It doesn't mean I have to like the philosophy. Then we come down to the gift this year that was Correa that fell into Falvey and Levines laps. I stated early on in June with my expectations the Twins would struggle down the stretch and with Lewis is the wings that we should trade Correa. He was an asset that fell into our laps and we could maximize future talent by trading with Lewis ready to take over. That immediately changed with Lewis injury. If we are going to compete the rest of the year it will have to be with Correa. Correa for the most part has performed well for the Twins. Probably a few more errors than you would like an elite player, but he has been a great leader on this team. So we are at the trade deadline and up 1 game. What do we do. If all players are assets you are willing to maneuver if you can get better value for this year and future years and/or you are going to trade some players you expect to lose anyways in the rule 5 draft. I expect we will get 2 relievers today. Nothing spectacular, essential players like Romo from 2019 that can be had for 20's or lower prospect. Based on the fact we were informed we came up short in the Montas offering its clear we are still looking for a starter and a decent starter at that. However they will not overpay. Whatever you may think of the management they will come up with their values and stick to it and move onto Plan B, C or D. I think they see this as an opportunity to get a pennant but they are not going to put in a ton of resources unless they are going to get future value. Mahle and Lopez look like the primary targets, and we will be losing a decent prospect or two in those trades. If we want to compete that is the cost. The Twins organization is so much better than where it was 5 years ago. That many cannot recognize that or relish that we have had several years where we have competed for division titles without really a full deck from bottom to top in the organization boggles me. Maybe we were just spoiled with 2019 and it set too high of expectations. The minors had really minimal talent and that talent is getting much stronger at all levels. Lets see what happens and be glad we can still root for our team in August to try and win a pennant and hopefully the twins get a few reinforcements today.

If we need a pitcher, two relief pitchers, possibly outfielder or catcher yes it’s too much for 1 player. We can’t completely deplete the farm system,

Ashbury I loved everything you wrote until the last paragraph. This was a team that wasn’t supposed to be where they are at the beginning of the season. Say what you will but the front office gave us a competitive team. Isn’t that all we can ask for? They could have tanked this season and they didn’t. All levels of the minors are playing well this year but we are depleting depth with injuries at the MLB level. We are a MASH unit right now, outfield catcher, pitcher 1st base. It’s ugly. Maeda may come back in Sept and maybe some get healthy. As stated the Twins will not overpay, so that is where today comes in. I expect no less than 3 trades today possibly 4. Could be buyer and seller situation, I have no idea but I think they will be creative and the Twins fans will be semi satisfied. I hope we get some reinforcements.

Game Thread: Tigers @ Twins 6:40 8/1/2022

Isn’t the goal to have a hitting and pitching pipeline? Compared to 4 years ago we have so much more pitching depth than we did back then. We will have a lot of pitching options for next year. Obviously the bullpen will need help. -

And as much as people like to bag on this front office, their draft strategy is starting to pay off. We are starting to have a pipeline of bats at the mlb doorstep. Steer Wallner, CES plus others. Now we just need a little more help on the pitching side. Let’s see what the trade deadline brings. -
That is the difference of getting players that are MLB players and at higher levels, vs players rated high but in A or high A ball. I If you trade prospects from the lower levels they don't have the same value as MLB level players or AAA players because they have a higher level of flaming out. Actually these packages are closer than you think based on that.

Ober would be in comparison to Sears both MLB pitchers that have had some success. Balazovic has been a top 100 prospect similar to Waldichuck. Medina and Varland both top 12 prospects in organization have some upside. Bowman is a second baseman their number 22 prospect. Seems to line up fairly well with Julien.
-
Can we get one of Mahle or Lopez, that is the goal.
-
Just for comparison sake, it would be like trading Ober, Balazovic, Varland and Julien. No offense that is way to rich for Montas.
-
The Yankees are acquiring Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino from the Athletics, per Jack Curry of YES Network. In exchange, the Athletics will receive pitchers JP Sears, Ken Waldichuk and Luis Medina, as well as second baseman Cooper Bowman, also from Curry.

I think its fairly evident the Twins liked Priellip much more than the rest of MLB. Could be our relationship with the program, could be we are projecting him much higher than most. We paid him overslot, but not crazy overslot money. Even still I think we can comfortably say he was likely the highest rated pitcher they had on their board from what we can gather. As to how good he will be that is comes down to how healthy he is and can he perform even close to his first season in college. If so we have a pretty dynamic arm. It is a high upside gamble on an injured arm. We have plenty of those throughout the system.

My evolving opinion on where the Twins stand

San Diego gave up quite a bit. Rogers seems more of a throw in at this point. -

Well we are still actively buyers, told we were runner ups in Montas trade. Rogers being traded again is interesting. -

The interesting part of this, the Twins were still in on Montas. Tells you they still plan to compete this year, and there are moves forthcoming. -

Mike, I guess I can look at it as management is going to have a tougher decision on their hands than I expected this season. I expected we would be sellers. So the dilemma becomes based off what you described is should they sell? We have excess prospects so we have to trade some for some relief possibly starting pitching. We have to get rid of 2-3 prospects minimum. Also like the Braves last year, you can find some cheap bats. Where it gets more expensive is pitching. You would need at least one more starting pitcher to take a realistic shot at this which would get expensive. I like the reliever we picked up last week. I think he will be on the big team shortly. Prices will come down tomorrow. We will see what they do. -
An ESPN writer suggested Twins trade for Ohtani
bunsen82 replied to Loosey's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
We won't trade for 1 year and 2 months of Ohtani. -
There is only one theoretical way the Twins could even pull this off and I am not advocating they do it. I have long said that management primarily looks at the players as assets. So hypothetically if you could do a 3 way trade that included trading away Correa plus prospects it could make sense for the longterm. But you would create a gaping hole at SS for this year. Correa equates to essentially 1 high level prospect. I still don't think we would have the assets to pull it off. I also think any assets should be put into pitching rather than hitters.
-
My guess is he decided he would be better off immediately going to the twins organization to get healthy and get stronger for next year. He is one heck of a lottery pick.

So here are my thoughts. The Twins obviously liked their first 2 draft picks as they very rarely go overslot on their early picks they are usually trying to gain money to use later in the draft. 2. Someone posted Priellip was closer to 48 than 28. Base on the contract I think that is a fair assessment. It’s not to say he doesn’t have high upside, but due to his injury he was lower on peoples boards than many of us anticipated and he commanded much less dollars to sign. 3. This is another year where the day 2 signings are more interesting to me than the day 2. On day 2 currently only the knuckleball pitcher and the volts 2nd baseman look like they have a reasonable shot at the MLB. We are also getting a couple high school athletes as lottery tickets. This was one hell of a draft.
