  • Twins Minor League Report (8/29): FSL Season Cancelled, Trevor Larnach Named Player of the Year

    Tom Froemming

With Hurricane Dorian looming, the Florida State League made the decision to cancel the rest of the regular season, and even the playoffs. Trevor Larnach was named the Florida State League Player of the Year this afternoon, then hit another home run for Pensacola this evening. Come see what else happened across the system Thursday night.

    TRANSACTIONS

Cedar Rapids activated LHP J.T. Perez from the seven-day IL.

IF Jake Hirabayashi assigned to the GCL roster from Cedar Rapids.

    RED WINGS REPORT

    Rochester 7, Buffalo 6

    Box Score

    Lewis Thorpe: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 6 K, 70.5% strikes (31 of 44 pitches)

HR: Willians Astudillo (5), Zander Wiel (23)

Multi-hit games: Alejandro De Aza (3-for-4, 3B, BB), Tomas Telis (3-for-5), Astudillo (2-for-4, HR, HBP), Ian Miller (2-for-5), Ronald Torreyes (2-for-5)

The Red Wings pulled out a victory to even their season record to 68-68 in a game in which many hopeful September callups shined.

Lewis Thorpe was excellent in a brief start, striking out six batters while giving up one run over three innings. Willians Astudillo hit his fourth home run in just the 13th game of his rehab assignment. Fernando Romero was perfect over the final two innings, protecting a one-run lead to earn the save.

Rochester entered the top of the eighth trailing, but Zander Wiel blasted his 23rd home run of the season, a two-run shot, to put the Wings up for good. Alejandro De Aza was 3-for-4 with a triple and a walk, boosting his OPS to 1.059 since signing with the Twins.

    BLUE WAHOO BITES

    Montgomery 5, Pensacola 2

    Box Score

    Jhoan Duran: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 6 K, 70.8% strikes (51 of 72 pitches)

    HR: Trevor Larnach (7)

    Multi-hit games: Larnach (3-for-5, HR), Alex Kirilloff (2-for-4, 2B, BB), Ryan Costello (2-for-3, 2B, BB), Travis Blankenhorn (2-for-5, 2B)

How’s that for a day at the office? Trevor Larnach was named the Florida State League Player of the Year, then went 3-for-5 with his seventh home run since being promoted up to Pensacola. In just 39 games, Larnach has already posted more homers in the Southern League than he had in 84 games in the FSL. That homer put the Blue Wahoos up 2-1, but it was all Biscuits from there.

Jhoan Duran turned in another encouraging start for Pensacola, striking out six batters over five innings of one-run ball. He’s managed to lower his Southern League ERA from 7.13 to 4.86 over his last two outings. Marcos Diplan surrendered the game-tying run in the sixth inning before Andrew Vasquez gave up the lead in the eighth.

    MIRACLE MATTERS

    Dunedin 3, Fort Myers 0

    Box Score

    Blayne Enlow: 4.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 K, 60.5% strikes (46 of 76 pitches)

    HR: None

    Multi-hit games: None

Blayne Enlow was cruising along, pitching a shutout through the first four innings, but was unable to pitch around a leadoff triple in the fifth inning. That runner eventually came around to score, Enlow was lifted in that inning and two of his runners who were inherited also scored.

That was it for the scoring in this one. The Miracle were only able to muster three hits in this game, a triple from Jacob Pearson and singles from Trey Cabbage and Yeltsin Encarnacion.

    KERNELS NUGGETS

Quad Cities 3, Cedar Rapids 2

    Box Score

    Tyler Palm: 5.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 0 K, 55.3% strikes (47 of 85 pitches)

    HR: Gabe Snyder 2 (18)

    Multi-hit games: Snyder (2-for-3, 2 HR, BB)

Gabe Snyder was a one-man wrecking crew, but unfortunately the rest of the Kernels struggled to provide any additional support. Snyder hit his 17th and 18th home runs of the season and also drew a walk.

Tyler Palm gave up three runs over the first five innings, but the Cedar Rapids bullpen was lights out from there. Austin Schulfer struck out three batters over two shutout innings before Rickey Ramirez finished things out with a pair of clean innings of his own.

The Kernels got a leadoff walk from Albee Weiss to open the eight inning, ended up loading the bases with two outs, but Wander Javier struck out swinging to end the threat. Matt Wallner then led off the ninth inning with a walk of his own, but was immediately erased by a double play.

    Okay I feel better.

I saw Diplan on the 40 man in a discussion earlier today. Then saw him on the recap tonight.

Me: I read every minor league update all year. How the F don’t I know this guy...

Me after two minutes of confusion: is he that dude we got from MIL

I’ve been pretty disappointed in Enlow. I thought he’d be quite a bit better considering his draft position and everything. I know he’s young for the league, but are there peripherals that would suggest good stuff for him? The k rate does not impress me and I wonder if he’s Kohl Stewart 2.0. Convince me otherwise.

Speaking of Kohl Stewart, I think it's about time for the Twins to let him go. He's been a disappointment throughout his minor and major league history. High WHIP, high ERA, low K/9. Clear the spot on the 40-man for a better prospect.

Is Romero going to be this years version of Buxton? A player who was expecting to be a September call-up but the Twins elect not to do so?

I understand the circumstance may be different with Service Times, etc., but maybe that is the kick in the pants Fernando needs to turn things around for next season.

Enlow has a better swinging strike rate than Jordan Balazovic (13.3% to 12.4%).

Larnach appears to be as good a hitter as Kirilloff.  His numbers are better this year than Alex's are although Alex was hurt early in the year so that impacts his numbers some for this year.  Last year Alex's numbers at high A would have beat Larnachs numbers this year by a mile and he did it while being two years younger but this year Larnach is having the better year.

Not to pick on the player of the year but I did think he was going to have a bit more HR power than he has shown so far.  Everything else he does should help him as he moves up.  His K rate is under 30% his walk rate is around 10% so a pretty good eye at the plate.  He can hit to the opposite field so shifting on him should be harder.  There is a lot to like about what he brings to the table.

We have two elite hitting outfielders now if we could just find a spot for them on the big league club.  I guess we have a little bit of time before we have to worry about that as they need to dominate AAA pitching yet but they both could push to be called up as early as next year.  I wouldn't bet against either of them as it looks like they have what it takes to get there.

Boy...an absolute miserable year in the state of Florida for baseball. Those three weeks in March make up for it in terms of revenue, I'm sure. But it's an awful place to be trying to get games and innings in to develop players. Or was it just worse than normal this year?

Great start for Thorpe.  Considering he won't be eligible to rejoin the Twins active roster until I believe next Wednesday, expect he will get back in a game on either Sunday or Monday...before travelling to Boston to rejoin the Twins.

Larnach has slightly better numbers at AA than Kirilloff, although a smaller sample.  Considering that Kirilloff battled injuries much of the first half of the season, or longer, still regard him as the better prospect.  But both should be very good MLB players beginning sometime late next year.  Only question is, where will they play?

Good seeing Schulfer have a very good outing after a couple clunkers.

I know it's just A Matter of Feeling, but I really like that Duran-Duran guy.

My reflex would be to say that in an ordinary world, he's an extraordinary player.  His ERA, FIP. and RIO all indicate he's one of the best young prospects on planet earth.  Another view, to kill two birds with one stone, so to speak, is that he could come up this fall and pitch out of the bullpen, and perhaps pick up a save.  A prayer, to be sure, but he has become notorious enough to warrant consideration, and his performance has certainly shown him to be hungry for a promotion.  Hungry, like the wolf, of course.

Im still on Team Kirilloff, but Larnach is definitely justifying his draft position. I suspect one of these two will be replacing Eddie Rosario in the OF, but you never know.

Blankenhorn is going to be an interesting player to watch next year. He took a step forward this year, but still has some work to do. He's unlocked some of his power potential, but his plate discipline really slipped at AA and unless he regains control of the strike zone he's not going to keep moving forward. mid-year he pushed into the top 20 prospect list here...not sure he'll stay there when everyone looks at the full season.

Enlow has some work to do, but still has real potential. Im happy that he got over 100 innings this year; I'm less thrilled that his K rate dropped back again at Ft. Myers. I'd also be happier if he could ever get his BB rate under 3. But there's still talent and time to develop. I think he starts back in Ft. Myers next season and moved up to AA fairly quickly.

I don't want to break any hearts, but Cron will be manning 1B to start next season, keeping it warm for Kirilloff. Larnach's appearance is dependent on the significant haul we receive for Rosario. There is no timetable for this move and a stop gap may be employed.

Regardless of what you may read, these FO guys are good and have large market team written all over them. Think what they could do with an owner who knew his way around a ballpark and didn't spend all his time counting pennies.

One or both OF will play in Minnesota next year. As will Jeffers.

    .

I'd bet on all three playing with the Twins at some point next year by ranking likelihood:

    3) Rocco loves platooning, a fully healthy Kiriloff ( career MiLB ~.900 OPS vs. RHP) works his way onto the team by mid-year, playing both 1B and occasional corner OF.

    2) Larnach was switched from RF to LF this year in anticipation of replacing Rosario at some point in 2020 or 2021. Is there a mid-year Rosario trade or do they trade him in the offseason and hire a stop gap FA as a bridge to Larnach?

    1) Jeffers, the physics major in college, will likely do the math- and calculate how to use his bat for best use of Newtonian mechanics of the juiced AAA baseball- and hit 20 HR and OPS > .825 in the first half of 2020, thereby forcing the issue by August 1, as he replaces Astudillo (or Castro?, Telis?), as the primary backup to Mitch Garver.
