  • Twins Minor League Report (7/4): Rijo, Poppen Dominate on Mounds

    Seth Stohs

We certainly hope you had a fantastic Fourth of July, and maybe you were even able to catch a ball game. It was a busy game day in the Twins farm system. Not as busy as Friday night will be (due to two doubleheaders) but busy nonetheless. Luis Rijo and Sean Poppen were really good on the mound. The Red Wings offense all showed up. There were extra innings for Pensacola. Jared Akins powered the Kernels to a win. A couple of transactions. And, a partridge in a pear tree. Enjoy tonight’s Minor League Report.

    BLUE WAHOO BITES

Griffin Jax started and gave up four runs on eight hits over the game’s first six innings. His ERA jumped to 2.04 on the season. Ben Gross made the start. The Duke right-hander gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits over the first six innings. He walked one and struck out four batters. Stephen Cruz struck out two batters over his two scoreless innings, and Nathan Hadley struck out two in the ninth inning.

Two different names, another two great starts.  Seems to be the case every day with Poppen and Rijo getting it done yesterday.  Gotta think there is someone in Rochester from among Smeltzer, Poppen and Thorpe that can step in next year.  But we thought that last year with Stewart, Gonsalves and De Jong, etc.

Jax wasn't his sterling self, but not too bad either.

Hope you enjoyed your Holiday also, Seth.

I worry that somehow we messed with Andrew Vasquez who was going well enough that we jumped him to the majors and now he is struggling.  Add him to Fernando Romero and we have to ask what the strategy of our pitching brain trust was.  These two have way to much talent to be wasted or washed up.

Gordon seems to be performing well, which over his career he seems to take awhile to adjust to a league.  I wonder if Twins will give him time, or if another team will have interest in him.  Not sure what he has shown defense wise, but sure a team will take him if he can play at SS, but if not his value drops a lot.  With way other prospects are jumping Gordon he is expendable.

I am still waiting on that Twins make trade with Giants headline.  I hope by end of break we have 2 new pitchers 1 starter and 1 bullpen. Would take 3 players with 2 bullpen.

I would guess some of their struggles

have to do more with the juiced ball in AAA rather than making it to the majors too early. Both are having some major control issues... the Twins have struggled with developing pitchers for a long time now.

I think Vasquez just doesn’t have good enough stuff for the Majors.

I'm still wondering about Hackimer. Is it top secret stuff? Is it disciplinary?

You may have missed a few days ago an occasional TD poster who is from Pensacola offered this unofficial insight:

    http://twinsdaily.com/topic/33738-article-twins-minor-league-report-627-enlow-caught-in-pitcher’s-duel/?p=871959

"Pretty sure the reason Hackimer was suspended has something to do with his public display of anger at the manager (Borrego) on the field. My husband was at the game. I can't describe it further than this as I was not there."

So, an instance of minor insubordination, that is being handled. If I was running a business in the public eye, I'd probably handle a personnel matter like this similarly. It has nothing to do with the player's on-field performance, so it's really no one else's business, IMO.

Not... that I don't appreciate learning jamisea's insight. I'm not above gossip. :)
