  • Twins Minor League Report (7/22): Berrios Baffles and Diaz Delivers

    Seth Stohs

Kyle Gibson was terrific, but Brandon Kintzler had to pull a Houdini Act to give the Twins a 2-1 lead on Friday night in Boston. The biggest play was a bases-loaded 4-2-3 double play off the bat of David Ortiz. Our hitter of the day for Friday night in the minor leagues is a guy who was compared to Ortiz when he was signed as a 16-year-old three years ago.

Oh, and Jose Berrios was back on the mound for Rochester on Friday night. Like Gibson, Berrios gave up a first-inning run. How did he respond?

    RED WINGS REPORT

    Rochester 3, Syracuse 1

    Box Score

Jose Berrios made another AAA start on Friday night. He gave up a run in the first inning, and that was about it. The red-hot right-hander gave up just the one run on three hits and a walk over eight innings. He struck out nine. Berrios improved to 10-4 and reduced his AAA ERA to just 2.31.

Sean Burnett got the save with a perfect ninth inning. It was his second save for the Red Wings.

Tommy Field continues to play well. He went 2-3 with his eighth home run. Byung Ho Park was 1-3 and homered for the second straight game. It was his fourth with the Red Wings.

    CHATTANOOGA CHATTER

    Chattanooga 2, Jackson 3

    Box Score

Omar Bencomo was on the mound for the Lookouts on Friday night. The right-hander gave up three runs on six hits in the first five innings. He walked one and struck out one. Tyler Jay came out of the bullpen for the first time this year. The lefty gave up one hit in a scoreless inning. Zack Jones gave up two hits - but no runs - in his inning. Trevor Hildenberger struck out two in his perfect inning.

Niko Goodrum went 2-4 with his second stolen base. Ryan Walker was 2-4. Mitch Garver was also 2-4. Shannon Wilkerson had the lone extra-base hit, his 10th double of the season.

    MIRACLE MATTERS

    Ft. Myers 0, Clearwater 5 (6-rain)

    Box Score

The rains came and cut this game short, and maybe that was a good thing. The Miracle bats managed just three hits in the game. LaMonte Wade had two of the hits including his fourth double. He’s hitting .369 since joining the Miracle. Reynaldo Rodriguez went 1-1 with two walks.

On the positive, the Miracle got a complete game from their starter. Lefty Sam Clay went all six innings. He gave up five runs (just two earned) on eight hits. He struck out one and didn’t walk a batter.

    KERNELS NUGGETS

Cedar Rapids 8, Bowling Green 2

    Box Score

The Kernels played a very nice game all around on Friday night. Maybe it was because they knew Jeremy Nygaard was in the stands watching.

Sam Gibbons had his best start of the year. The Australian right-hander gave up two runs on four hits in seven innings. Both runs came on solo home runs. He walked one and struck out two. Michael Cederoth and Tom Hackimer each threw a scoreless inning.

The offense showed up. Jaylin Davis led the way. The outfielder went 2-4 with his fifth double and fourth home run. Manuel Guzman had his best game with the Kernels this year. He went 3-4 with his first double and also had his first stolen base. Christian Cavaness went 2-3. Sean Miller went 2-5 and drove in two runs. Luis Arraez added his 23rd double.

    E-TWINS E-NOTES

    Elizabethton 12, Johnson City 8

    Box Score

For the second straight game, the E-Twins posted double-digit runs, and they again needed it. The Twins scored seven runs over the first three innings but when they came to bat in the bottom of the 4th inning, they were down 8-7. They got a big blast in the sixth inning and piled on some more.

Lewin Diaz had a tremendous game. The powerful, David Ortiz look-a-like went 3-4 with his tenth double, his fifth home run and six RBIs. His home run came in the sixth inning and with the bases loaded. He is now hitting .315 on the short-season. Brandon Lopez led off and went 3-4 with a walk and his first triple. He’s hitting .382. Travis Blankenhorn is hitting .304 after a 3-5 game. Alex Kirilloff went 3-5 and is hitting .360. He hit his third home run. Mitchell Kranson went 2-5 with his fifth double. Roberto Gonzalez added his first home run of the season.

Alex Schik was back on the mound. He gave up eight runs on ten hits in just 3.2 innings. He walked one and struck out six. Hector Lujan gave up just two hits over 3.1 shutout innings. He struck out two. Colton Davis struck out four (and walked one) over two scoreless, hitless innings.

    GCL TWINS TAKES

GCL Twins 5, GCL Red Sox 5 (suspended after 9 innings)

    Box Score

Earlier in the week, the GCL Twins played a 15 inning game. On Friday, they played nine innings before the rains came. The game was suspended after nine innings and the rest of the game will be played on Saturday as part of a doubleheader. More will be written on this game tomorrow but there were a couple of highlights from the nine innings that were played. For instance, Brady Anderson started and threw six shutout innings. Jordan Balazovic made his professional debut and threw two shutout innings in relief. Aaron Whitefield and Jorge Andrade each had two hits. Roni Tapia was 1-3 with his first home run which increased his batting average to .067.

If on 8/1 Berrios is not at least on a plane headed to Mpls, then only one of two assumptions can be made. The Twins are convinced he is a AAAA pitcher, or they are incompetent. BF nothing's gonna happen until a move in the SP rotation is made. If they don't do that, then I have no idea what they are going to do.

I pretty much agree with what's said above.  I don't know how Berrios will do in the majors, but he's learned all he can in AAA.  At some point, the only way you learn how to get major league batters out is to pitch against major league batters.  Let's get Berrios started doing that.

Some of the younger hitters are putting up nice stats. Lamonte Wade looks really good at the plate from the video I've seen of him. Kirilloff and Jaylin Davis seem to be taking to pro ball. And what's the word on Arraez?  Is he a serious prospect?

E'town's pitching staff has been pretty dismal. Perhaps Brady Anderson could help them out. Is there a good reason why the 23-year old is in the GCL?

Also, with Wander Javier not playing in the DSL, Victor Tademo has caught my box score watching attention. The recently turned 17-year old hit his first home run yesterday and is slashing .320/.383/.476 through 30 games. He's drawn 10 walks to 9 strikeouts and is perfect in 8 stolen base attempts.

Berrios's next start simply has to be with the Twins.

A little disappointed Jay came out of the pen. I hope this doesn't mean he's done starting for the year. I understand limiting his innings, but they aren't very high at this point either. I'd think he could make a few more starts before switching to the pen for the remainder of the season.

Seth, there's some strong hitting performances at E-Town from a few youngsters, including Kirilloff. What are the chances a couple of these guys moving up to Cedar Rapids to close out the year?

Duffey may make a Berrios promotion happen very soon.  He's not been very good.

I had that same thought. Berrios needs X number of starts to be ready for the start of 2017, he doesn't need X+2 or X+3. No doubt TR, Antony, and our new GM would look at it the same way. The most important thing is to keep winning.

My thoughts... (and I've written at least three articles in the last year saying Berrios is ready and needs to be up)

Berrios would make one more start before the trade deadline, and the Twins are likely hoping that they can get anything for one of two of their starters and then call him up. Same for Chargois and Polanco I'd assume. All three should be up on August 2nd.

I'm honestly not sure what to make of Arraez. He can hit, and he takes good plate appearances. Obviously the numbers speak for themselves. I mean, he's hitting .340. He's not fast. He's not a great athlete. He can play 2B, but he DHs a lot with the Kernels. In my mind, he's easily a Top 20 prospect, but I don't know how much higher I'll be able to move him.

Interesting, especially coming from you as you tend to be more bullish on prospects than most.

I'm working on my list and I think he's in my top 10 right now.  What he's doing at his age relative to the league is rather impressive on it's own merit.  The kids 3 years younger than the league and absolutely destroying it.  He may not be an athlete, but unless there was some fudging going on with his identification, he's got to be in consideration.

Brady Anderson was a non-drafted free agent. Teams draft and then look at their rosters and see where they have needs. The Twins needed some pitching for the GCL. Now, the only players willing to sign at that point are college seniors with no eligibility left, guys just looking for a chance. I don't want to say they're "organizational filler" but that's kind of exactly what it is.

Then again, there have been plenty of non-drafted free agents who have made the big leagues. The Twins have had a couple in Rob Delaney and Cole DeVries. Those guys took full advantage of their opportunity.

39th round pick, senior pitcher Patrick McGuff has already been moved up to Elizabethton. If the E-Twins starters continue to struggle, we could see Anderson move up.

I don't recall the Twins signing so many non-drafted guys right after the draft before though. But they are able to have like 35 players on the two rookie league rosters so they fill them.

Kiriloff has had a heck of a first month.  Wow.  Lots of good news in these reports, thanks.

yeah, if you remember, Buxton wasn't that good in rookie ball.  He started in the GCL and got promoted, though his overall line was pretty MEH.  It wasn't until low A that Buxton broke out.  Kirilloff on the other hand... that kid can hit. I was hoping they'd have grabbed one of the pitchers. Right now it looks like I was wrong.

I agree. These are the only 3 additional players our favorite team needs ready by day one of 2017. Any additional are pie in the sky, although I'm hoping we get a 4th in a deadline trade.

Does this ETon lineup remind you of the crew they had with Rosario, Sano and others, Seth?  That team had better pitching, but this team is putting up a lot of runs.

Interesting to see Jay come out of the bullpen last night.  Had been expecting this.  Would rather he keep pitching the rest of the year out of the pen, rather than make another start or two and then sitting.

    Shades of Altuve?

    (without the athleticism)

His continued evolution as a player has rendered moot what was initially the central theme of stories about him, his 5-6 height.

    Arraez=Uribe?

When Polanco and Walker finally graduate sometime later this year (along with Palka), the current wave of hitting prospects will have all passed through the system.  Great to see a new crop emerging in the lower minors.  Would love it if Wander was a part of it, but Kiriloff, Blankenhorn, and Diaz, and maybe Minier, along with Arraez, Davis, and Wade constitute some pretty decent prospects to watch for the next few years.  And I know I am missing some.

I'm not really down on him as much as I'm really curious to see how he grows and develops in the next couple of years. Obviously in baseball, you don't have to be a great athlete, but I think he should stay in Cedar Rapids the rest of the year and keep working on some things. I know he spent time in Ft. Myers last offseason at a strength camp. It'd be good for him to do the same this coming year.

I'll be shocked if Walker and Palka get close to "graduating" this year, but I agree with the point that there is another nice wave of players coming in the lower levels.

I am just not big on Walker. His power is great but his SO rate will just go up in the the big leagues and we don't need another prospect to come up to SO.  I only project Walker as a NL pitch hitter or part time player.   Palka maybe a Sept call up to give him a taste before a better chance next year but I would rather wait to give him his shot next year.  But I will say that Palka trade is looking like a steal so far.

To be fair, Palka still strikes out too much as well, just not quite as bad as ABW.
