  • Twins Minor League Report (7/19): Enlow Debuts, Lookouts Launch, Lots of Offense

    Jeremy Nygaard

The Twins took a series from the New York Yankees for the first time in forever.

There were some rumors - that seem to have been shot down since - that Bartolo Colon was considering retirement after his next start.

LEN3 reported after the game that the Twins have signed RP Michael Kohn to a minor-league deal. He is still working his way back from Tommy John surgery, so he’ll begin his time in the organization on the disabled list.

Let’s check in on all of Wednesday’s games.

    RED WINGS REPORT

    Rochester 7, Charlotte 6

    Box Score

The Red Wings were walk-off winners on Wednesday night.

ByungHo Park was the offensive star. He went 3-4 with a home run and the game-winning walk-off RBI. He’s worked his batting average back up to .256. Mitch Garver went 2-4 with a two-run home run, his 13th on the season. (Call him up!) Kennys Vargas hit a home run in his first at-bat since being optioned.

Justin Haley got knocked around a bit in his rehab start. He allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits (two home runs) and two walks. He struck out four. Mason Melotakis pitched two scoreless innings, striking out one. Drew Rucinski gave up a run in 1 1/3 innings. Alan Busenitz picked up the win after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

The Red Wings are 54-41 but remain six and a half games out of their division and five games out of the wild card race.

    CHATTANOOGA CHATTER

    Chattanooga 12, Mobile 1

    Box Score

Stephen Gonsalves made the start and picked up the win. Exiting with two outs in the sixth inning, Gonsalves struck out eight, allowing one run on five hits and two walks.

Todd Van Steensel struck out two in 2 1/3 innings. Nick Anderson finished the game.

The powerful bats were the story of the game though. A pair of home runs by Jonathan Rodriguez led the six-home run charge. Nick Gordon, LaMonte Wade, Andy Wilkens and T.J. White also contributed. Wade was 4-5 with four RBI and a stolen base. Rodriguez and Carlos Paulino both had three hits. Rodriguez scored three times.

At 20-6, the Lookouts have a five-game lead in their division.

    MIRACLE MATTERS

    Fort Myers 4, Bradenton 3

    Box Score

Lewis Thorpe struck out seven in seven innings. He gave up two runs on six hits and a walk, but got a no decision. Tom Hackimer recorded five outs - and gave up a run - but improved his record to 3-0. Sam Clay got the one-out save.

The Miracle scored all four of their runs in the last two innings. Sean Miller hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning. Miller told Seth Stohs, “I wasn't looking to homer. They were shifting me pull side pretty good so I was honestly just looking to keep my swing short and hit a ball in the 4 hole. But he ran a fastball in and I just reacted to it. And I had a pretty good feeling it was gone off the bat!"

Mitch Kranson and Jaylin Davis drove in runs in the ninth inning. Kevin Garcia was the only player with a multi-hit game, going 2-4.

Brent Rooker went 0-3 with two strikeouts and a walk. Through two games he’s batting .000.

The 18-7 Miracle have a three-game lead in their division.

    KERNELS NUGGETS

Cedar Rapids 3, Great Lakes 8

    Box Score

Domenick Carlini got knocked around for nine hits in four innings, resulting in seven runs. But only three were earned as the Kernels committed four errors. Carlini struck out six, but also gave up two home runs.

Patrick McGuff got six outs, all by strikeout. Logan Lombana and Colton Davis put in scoreless outings.

Aaron Whitefield was 3-4 with two stolen bases and two runs scored. Gorge Munez got two hits, but also committed an error. Lewin Diaz got a hit and drove in a run… but committed two errors.

The playoff-bound Kernels dropped to 11-14 in the second half.

    E-TWINS E-NOTES

    Elizabethton 17, Bristol 8

    Box Score

The E-Twins spotted Bristol an early lead, but used a nine-run eighth inning - and 20 hits total! - to take the victory.

Offensively, every player hit. And every player scored. And all but one player drove in a run. Lots. Of. Offense.

Jordan Gore, Shane Carrier, Andrew Bechtold and T.J. Dixon all went 3-5. Carrier, Bechtold, and Dixon all doubled, as did Carson Crites. Dixon drove in four runs and stole a base. J.J. Robinson hit his fourth home run of the young season.

Melvi Acosta struggled, allowing seven runs (five earned) on six hits and three walks. He struck out four in four innings. Jovani Moran struck out four in three scoreless innings. He earned the win. Jared Finkel picked up the save.

    GCL TWINS TAKES

GCL Twins 4, GCL Rays 2 (Game one - completion of yesterday’s suspended game)

    Box Score

Pedro Garcia picked up the game where it left off - in the second inning - and pitched the next six innings to complete the game. He allowed two runs on three hits and two walks. He struck out six.

Offensively, Emmanuel Morel’s two-run double gave the club a four-run second inning. The squad managed only four hits, which included a Kerby Camacho double.

GCL Twins 4, GCL Rays 1 (Game two)

    Box Score

Blayne Enlow made his professional debut. He issued a walk and an unearned run over two innings. He struck out three. Enlow told Stohs, "Stepping on the field today is hopefully the first of many. Toeing the rubber today was the best feeling, and now it’s just a grind from here. I will continue to compete and work my hardest to be the best I can.”

Amilcar Cruz struck out four in the next four innings to pick up the win. Converted outfielder Zach Featherstone picked up the save with a scoreless inning.

Daniel Palka went 2-3 with a home run in his rehab start. Expect him to head north soon. Royce Lewis went 2-3 with a two-run home run, his third. Alex Robles hit his first professional home run and also went 2-3. Robles told Stohs, "I hit a fastball down and in and just tried put a good swing on it, the feeling of rounding the bases for the first time was awesome, just kind of put into perspective how cool it is to be able to play professional baseball and be able to compete at this level.”

The GCL Twins improve to 14-7.

Nick Gordon hit his seventh HR. He leads the Southern League in triples, is fourth in doubles, and has several more homers than expected. He also has 10 SBs. He's having a great year offensively, as one of the youngest players in the league, which is causing upward recalibration of his value.

Another good outing by Melotakis. I don't understand his being DFA'd and really don't understand why no one picked him up.

ByungHo Park seems to be putting it together. Could he have value to someone come the end of the month?

Great seeing Thorpe go 7 innings. Is that his longest outing of the year? Although I see he threw only 80 pitches, must have been very effective.

Melo just doesn't have the velocity that he did right after his return, but he's been pitching well. It was surprising when he was DFAd, and maybe more surprising that he wasn't claimed. Good deal for the Twins.

Park has been pretty good the last 34 games. He's hit .328/.366/.516 (.833) with 10 doubles, two triples and three homers. I can't imagine there'd be any trade value for the 31-year-old, but if they were offered pretty much anything for him, I'm sure they'd take it.

And yes, that was Thorpe's longest outing. Previous high was 5.2 innings. But you're right. 80 pitches in 7 innings is very efficient. He has thrown 84 pitches in 5 innings earlier, and a couple of starts ago, he threw 99 pitches in 5.2 innings.

The E-Twins were down 5-0 after 2 innings, and 7-2 in the 5th inning. A nine-run eighth innings made it a blowout. They did the same thing on Monday when I wrote the report... 0-0 game through 7 innings, they then scored 5 and 8 in the final two innings. They have some talent.

Hey Seth, that just made me think about Kiriloff and where he might slot next year when he returns from TJ.   Considering the season he had last year, I wonder if the FO starts him off E-Town to get re-acclimated or Cedar Rapids?

Of course a great amount would depend on how he responds to the surgery and rehab.

Nice night for Gonsalves as well as Thorpe. I'd like to see Romero and Gonsalves moved out of AA soon. I know it's not killing them to keep them there but at the same time, they seem to have figured out that level. Let's see them in AAA or (in Romero's case) our bullpen.

I wonder if Garver has some modest trade value - looking at what Buetera and Herrmann got, I think catchers are worth more than we do. If we're going to keep Giminez, why not move Garver for a AA future Mejia? Or move Giminez and bring up Garver.

I'd think they'd start him in Cedar Rapids. He should be doing some hitting soon, and by Instructs, he should be full go. So, by next spring, he should be fine.

Miinor league players are almost never traded for other minor league players. There are a lot of theories why, but it is what it is. So, I doubt we'll see Garver moved for a minor league player. Frankly, I'd have him in MN as utility guy/catcher/ph/dh vs lefities. But I have my doubts.

How much time are they giving Garver in the outfield and how is his defense?  If he is serviceable as a 4th outfielder, he would be a nice addition next year as back-up catcher / OFer and RH bat of the bench.  Might even consider trading Grossman at the deadline if we received a decent offer.

Mitch Garver's number are not a result of SSS.

His batting average has been on the rise seemingly all season, he has had an OPS of >.800 nearly all season and it currently sits at .915.

As Gimenez is a free agent at the end of the year, I cannot imagine that Garver wouldn't get an opportunity to join the club in September and would be penciled in as the backup catcher next spring.

OTOH, he's not a Falvine acquisition and I continue to wonder how much that plays into the opportunity a player might be given.

Not agreeing or disagreeing, but what about him indicates that he could move up fast?

Blylevan was here at 19, with his main pitch a 12 to 6 curve ball. From what I have read, Enlow has that type of curve ball, so if he can spot the fastball and use the curve ball, he would only need the third pitch to be really effective. That type of pitcher could rise quickly.

Haley only has 5 days of rehab left, then he will need to be activated...

oh, Gawd, I'd kind of forgotten about him.

That makes me kind of sad.

Watch them send down anybody but Breslow, Belisle, Pressly, or Buddy.

That would make me kind of mad.

Gonsalves needed a lot of pitches to strike out 8 in 5 2/3 innings.  Thorpe needed far fewer to K 7 in 7.  Just observing.

I think there is a lot to this. Gonsalves is a year and a half older too.

If he stays healthy the rest of the year, Thorpe is going to jump up lists. Perhaps the top pitching prospect in the Twins system.
