  • Twins Minor League Report (7/10): Royce Rakes, Albee Blasts, Edwar Deals

    Ted Schwerzler

The longball was on display in wins for the Twins affiliates today while Edwar Colina turned in another impressive performance on the bump down in Fort Myers. With a few teams having the day off action could've been sparse, but that certainly wasn't the case thanks to some stand out performances.

    Schedule Day Off

    MIRACLE MATTERS

    Fort Myers 7, Daytona 6 (12 innings)

    Box Score

Edwar Colina started this marathon for the Miracle and was nothing short of lights out. He picked up eight punchies en route to seven shutout innings. Giving up only three hits and walking none, it was a low-stress outing for most of the day.

Royce Lewis has looked great in his brief return from the Futures Game and that was no different today. He got this one started stealing second, his 14th of the year, and an errant throw allowed him to come around and score. In the fifth Lewis blasted his eighth dinger on the season, and second in as many days. Trey Cabbage doubled in the eighth to put Fort Myers ahead 5-1.

In the top of the ninth the wheels began to fall off. Daytona pushed across four runs of their own to force extras. Each team scored a run in the 10th inning, and it wasn’t until the bottom of the 12th inning that Cabbage plated the winning run. A groundout turned into an error and Gabriel Maciel raced across the plate to secure the victory.

    KERNELS NUGGETS

Great Lakes 6, Cedar Rapids 2

    Box Score

Tyler Palm took the ball for the Kernels in this one and he left with the home team in a good spot. Twirling six innings of three-run ball (two earned), he struck out six allowing only three free passes.

Cedar Rapids jumped out to an early lead on a first inning triple from Gilberto Celestino. Trevor Casanova doubled the tally crushing his second dinger of the season. Unfortunately that's where the runs stopped for the Kernels. The Loons added runs in three separate frames to wipe away the deficit and take this one.

Having ridden an eight-game winning streak, Cedar Rapids will look to get back in the win column tomorrow night when these two do battle again.

    E-TWINS E-NOTES

    Elizabethton 8, Burlington 5

    Box Score

Tyler Benninghoff was the tasked starter for the E-Twins tonight and he was searching for his first win of the season. Throwing five innings of two-run baseball, he accomplished that thanks to a nice offensive output from the hometown lineup.

After getting behind 1-0 in the top of the first Elizabethton evened the score and then some in the bottom half. Albee Weiss cracked a grand slam and then Max Smith drove in Seth Gray to put five on the board. Weiss homered again in the bottom of the second, his sixth of the season, and the E-Twins had a nice five-run cushion. Yeremi De La Cruz doubled in Will Holland in the third, and Smith put up another RBI in the fifth.

Birmingham made this one interesting however. Trailing 8-2 after Smith's second RBI of the game, the Royals added runs in the sixth and seventh innings to draw within three. That was where the rally would end as Dylan Thomas slammed the door for a six out save.

    GCL TWINS TAKES

GCL Orioles 4, GCL Twins 3

    Box Score

Dakota Chalmers was on the bump for his second action of the season since returning from Tommy John surgery. He turned in three scoreless innings allowing just a single hit. The former Athletics prospect picked up six strikeouts and allowed three walks.

The Twins got out ahead scoring all three of their runs before the Orioles could push anything across. Bryson Gandy doubled in his first pro RBI, then was at the plate for a balk-induced run before another single drove in his second of the game.

In the eighth inning the wheels fell off for the away team. The Twins gave up three to part with the lead and then allowed a fielder’s choice to walk it off in the ninth.

When it comes to guys like Chalmers, who we got for Rodney, I feel like it's dropping millions of dollars down a wishing well.  Getting in return nothing but a wish/hope/roll of dice of someone doing well at a low-level of the minors, and continuing that success every year for 3-5 years.  Kind of a joke, but it is what it is.

Secondly, I'm really struggling with the "years of player control/40-man roster" stuff here.  Rooker deserves a shot.  However, he's not on the 40-man, so he's going to stay in AAA and continue to "polish up".  I know he's not going anywhere, and I really like our other options who ARE on the 40-man, but Rooker is the one pressing the issue.  The only one I could see getting the boot is Ryan Eades, but we can't afford that...so I guess I've talked myself into a box...

It seems like Javier has been in a slump - I feel like there have been a string of hitless days. I checked his MiLB line - .146 .250 .211 .461. (34 games)  I hope this changes soon, but as I mentioned in a previous post I do not see him as a top ten prospect at this time.

Great seeing Benninghoff have a very good start.  Has been a long road back from his TJ surgery immediately after being drafted and signed for way over slot.

Anthony Escobar didn't have a good day yesterday coming on in a relief appearance.  Checked if it was the first time he came on in relief in his year plus career...it was.

Nice clip of Rooker's double.  Have a feeling we may not be following him too much longer as the Twins work to finalize that big deal(s) for pitching.

Colina is back with a vengence.  Really like the way he attacks hitters.  He has a nice K rate and just as important a nice WHIP.  That tells me his stuff is tough to hit and with good control he is making the hitters work to get on base.  Won't know who he is for sure until AAA where things get tougher for pitchers.  He is someone to watch and hope he can continue to improve.

While Chalmers has Strike out stuff with the Walks he will never make it.  Need to be able to attack to make it. Nibble, nibble bites you in the end.  Nice to see the K's and hope the staff can help him gain some control as well.

My boy Escobar had a tough night.  I wonder if they had him working on a certain pitch or he just didn't have his best stuff.  He is young so likely more nights like that to come but I had loved the zeroes he was putting up early.

Don't know much Albee but that was a monster night at the plate.  Also nice to see Lewis hitting the ball better.

Lewis has been hitting really well for a week or two now... hopefully that continues.

Yep. In his past 10 games he's batting .325 on a very reasonable BABIP of .323, and he adds enough other goodies to the base hits to have an OPS of .931 in that span. CALL HIM UP! :)

Chalmers throws 95 to 97 mph. I don't think he nibbles. He just misses the zone a lot with his heater. I wonder how many of his Ks come because hitters swing at pitches out of the zone. If he can throw strikes consistently then he should move up quickly through the minors. Garvin Alston worked with him some while Chalmers was in the minors with the Oakland As. Alston was glowing in his praise for Chalmers in terms of stuff and competitiveness and ceiling

Except the A's are the ones that paid him millions. The Twins will likely spend about $20,000 over 3-5 years to see if a guy who throws in the upper-90s can figure out where the strike zone is. That's a pretty good risk.

The other alternative is for Rooker to spend the season playing twice a week behind Rosario, Cron and Cruz... I like the idea of him playing 6 games a week and getting better. They can call him up on August 30th to be a role player in September.

Can you expand on your paragraph regarding Chalmers? I don't understand what you mean by "millions of dollars"?

As he's not on the 40 man, he doesn't cost any more than anyone else would to fill that milb roster spot.

I am guessing Seth is referring to the $1.2M signing bonus the A's paid Chalmers.

What I was eluding to was us signing Fernando Rodney to a $4.5 million deal, then trading him away for a low-A guy who has struggled with injuries. Chalmers has a great K ratio, but it's reflective of only one year in Beloit.  When a team is considered a seller, we sell short sometimes.

With the 40-man, I was talking about how Rooker is not on it.  I want guys who deserve a shot to get it.  Not stay where they are because of technicalities.  If Rooker's hot, use him.  Especially with our depleted outfield/1B.

What did you expect to get for 2 months of Fernando Rodney?

They didn't sign him just so they could flip him, so the millions they paid Rodney has nothing to do with the return they got. In fact, they saved 2 months worth of salary ($1.5m) by trading him.
