    Eric Pleiss

Brent Rooker hit two homers for Chattanooga, Nick Gordon cracked a couple of doubles for Rochester and neither Stephen Gonsalves nor Blayne Enlow gave up an earned run in their starts. Keep reading for more information on the night that was across the minor league system

    RED WINGS REPORT

    Rochester 2, Lehigh Valley 0

    Box Score

On back-to-back RBIs through the first five innings, the Rochester Red Wings scored the only runs of the night in the top of the sixth inning on a Kennys Vargas RBI double followed by a Brock Stassi RBI single. Overall the Wings were fairly hapless with men in scoring position, hitting just 2-for-12. Nick Gordon was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored, and continues to hit well since his AAA call-up.

Stephen Gonsalves earned his fourth win of the year to move to 4-1 with five full innings of scoreless baseball. Gonsalves struck out five and walked four, throwing 54 of his 86 pitches for strikes. Tyler Duffey pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, giving up just one hit, while walking and striking out two. Gabriel Moya earned his second save of the year retiring all four batters he faced in 1 1/3 innings.

    CHATTANOOGA CHATTER

    Montgomery 10, Chattanooga 6

    Box Score

Kohl Stewart ran into a buzzsaw, giving up six earned runs in just 1 1/3 innings, and the Montgomery Biscuits stayed hot even after Stewart was out of the game, scoring three more runs against Sam Clay in just an inning of work to take a 9-2 lead midway through the third inning. Tyler Jay gave the Lookouts 2 2/3 innings of scoreless one-hit baseball to put the team back on track, but the damage was already done. Ryan Eades gave up a run in two innings of work. And then Casey Crosby and Zack Jones each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game.

Despite scoring six runs, the Lookouts left nine men on base. Brent Rooker had a big day at the plate going 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs and three RBIs. Zandier Wiel had a three-hit night, going 3-for-5 with a double. Edgar Corcino had a home run as well, a solo shot.

    MIRACLE MATTERS

    Charlotte 1, Fort Myers 0

    Box Score

Fort Myers had just six hits and put only three men into scoring position on a night where they fell 1-0. Mitchell Kranson and Jaylin Davis each had a pair of hits, but the rest of the team managed only two more hits.

The lack of run support squandered a solid start from Andro Cutura, who dropped to 2-1 with the loss despite seven innings of one run (unearned) ball. He gave up just three hits, walked two and struck out five. Kevin Marnon pitched the eighth, retiring all three batters he faced.

    KERNELS NUGGETS

Kane County 3, Cedar Rapids 2

    Box Score

Cedar Rapids looked to steal a game on the road against Kane County, leading 2-0 after eight and a half innings but Kane County got to the Kernels bullpen for three runs in the bottom of the ninth, walking off on a single to right field.

Starter Blayne Enlow gave the Kernels six innings of one-hit baseball. He struck out four and walked six. He was replaced by Calvin Faucher who added two more scoreless innings. Jared Finkel came on for the ninth with that two-run lead and gave up three runs on four hits before recording a single out.

Despite the pitching woes, the Kernels should have scored more runs, going 0-for-9 with men in scoring position and stranding six base runners. Ben Rortvedt was the only hitter with more than one hit, and he had just two singles. The Kernels scored both of their runs on a two-run home run from Shane Carrier in the sixth inning.

Nice game for Rooker, who now has 6 home runs.  Seems like he has begun settling in at AA.  And Wiel just keeps hitting really well!

Checked the box score for Cedar Rapids, Eric.  I think you flipped Enlow's walks (4) and strikeouts (6) in the write up above.  Great seeing Enlow have a game like this.

And Gonsalves is probably ready for a move up after back-to-back shutout games.  But when will a spot open up?  Maybe July if they have excess starters and can move one?  Or will they have to move two to make room for Gonsalves?  If so, who?  The Twins may be in position to pick up several nice young prospects in July.  Otherwise, probably won't see him until September.

But they have to get Gonsalves up some time to confirm that he should be one of their starters next year and beyond.  Knowing that will affect what they do with Santana, Gibson and Lynn in the offseason.

Is it possible to add a season long stat to the top prospect summary so we can quickly see how they've been doing? OPS for hitters and ERA for pitchers?

I'd like to see more season stats posted too. I'm too lazy to go to other sources for that information. If TD could include more of those stats with these minor league wrap-ups and articles that would be terrific.

Thanks for the feedback. We just added that top 20 prospect summary into these this season, it does add some more work. These reports can already be a handful as is, especially once the short season leagues start (which is in less than a month!). I'm really hesitant about piling on anything, even something small, to the workload for these.

But, there have been some other really good ideas offered up by readers this week about things they'd like to see on a regular basis in concerns to the top prospects. I'm thinking it might make sense to roll out a top prospect update post each week with some of those year-to-date numbers/trends.

Would that be something you'd be interest in reading each week?

Tom, that is a great idea and I would enjoy that.

All of us, I'm sure, appreciate the hard work you all put into these summaries. Adding to that burden, or maybe a labor of love, doesn't make the process any easier. Again thanks to all the contributors.

Gonsalves still has some control issues. 4 walks in 5 innings pitched...

I was going to ask if he was getting squeezed a bit. 54 strikes out of 86 pitches is 63% strikes. That isn't bad, and certainly not a performance that typically leads to 4 walks.

It's probably worth noting that their adopt a prospect page is updated fairly regularly. As well, there are articles on how they are doing every month or so. Keep coming back :)
