    SAINTS SENTINEL

    Louisville 6, St. Paul 3

    Box Score

Tomas Telis hit a 3-run home run, but the Saints’ bats were largely quiet during their loss to the Bats Thursday night. They were only able to gather two hits as a team, the other being a double off the bat of Mark Contreras.

Additionally, Jhoan Duran - Twins Daily’s No. 5 prospect in the Twins system - looked like a mere mortal. He struggled with control all game, which resulted in him dishing out five walks and three hits in four innings of work. The good news was that the Saints stretched him out to 82 pitches, meaning he’s on pace for 95-100 in a week or so. The bad news was that he threw only 38 strikes; that’s a pretty putrid 46.3% strike rate.

Outings like what he displayed Thursday night is the biggest factor preventing Duran from appearing in the upper-half of the league’s top 100 prospects. He’ll have nights where he’s unhittable, but he’ll also have nights where he can’t located the zone at all.

That said, he was still pumping 101 mph and his ERA now registers at 3.27, so there is plenty to still be very excited about.

    WIND SURGE WISDOM

    Wichita 7, Arkansas 6

    Box Score

The Wind Surge won a wild one against the Travelers Thursday night in Wichita. The team led 5-1 heading into the seventh inning when the Wichita bullpen was touched for five runs across the final two frames. However, Jermaine Palacios played the hero, walking it off with a single to score Jose Miranda.

All nine of the Wind Surge’s hits were singles with Andrew Bechtold and Aaron Whitefield contributing the only multi-hit games. Whitefield and teammate BJ Boyd each drove in two runs.

Josh Winder took the mound for Wichita and, much like Duran, didn’t have his best showing. That said, he was still able to power through 6 ⅓ innings, even though it took him 83 pitches to do so. He struck out four and allowed a season-high three runs, elevating his ERA to 2.05. Yeah, he’s still doing just fine. Jovani Moran struck out two in his one inning of work out of the pen, lowering his ERA to 1.00 and giving him 27 strikeouts in 17 ⅔ innings. Could we see him in a Twins uniform before the end of the season?

    KERNELS NUGGETS

Fort Wayne 8, Cedar Rapids 6

    Box Score

The Kernels scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning to make this game appear as though it were closer than it actually was. Michael Helman led Cedar Rapids at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double as well as his fifth home run of the year, which earned him Minor League Hitter of the Day recognition. Seth Gray (4) and Leobaldo Cabrera (2) also contributed homers - Cabrera brought all four runs home in the ninth with a grand slam - but the remainder of the Kernels’ hits failed to produce any runs.

Cedar Rapids went with an all bullpen game on the mound, with four pitchers - Owen Griffith, Tyler Palm, Melvi Acosta, and Tyler Watson - combining to strike out five and walk six. Palm was saddled with the loss after he allowed six runs over his two innings, though only two were earned. Watson was arguably the most successful of the group, tossing three innings, striking out two, allowing one hit, and not surrendering any runs.

    MUSSEL MATTERS

Ft. Myers 7, St. Lucie 0

    Box Score

Louie Varland and the rest of the Ft. Myers’ squad lived up to their mascot’s namesake en route to shutting out the Mets. Varland earned Pitcher of the Day honors for his effort, as he struck out six and did not give up any runs over the span of six innings. (The game was called after eight innings due to rain.) You won’t find Varland’s name on the list of top Twins’ prospects, but thus far this season he’s accumulated 34 strikeouts in only 20 innings and owns a 3.15 ERA. He’s one to keep an eye on as the season progresses.

Keoni Cavaco had a promising day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with his first career triple. Yunior Severino also contributed a multi-hit game to improve his batting average to .211 and OPS to .637. While those numbers won’t jump off the page, he is trending in the right direction having registered at least one hit in six of his last 10 contests. Catcher Kyle Schmidt went 2-for-4 on the night including his first professional home run.

Duran... I know it is way more pressure that you deserve, but please understand that you represent at least 80% of the meager hope remaining in this organization....so starts like this are a bit of a gut punch ☹️

Well-said! Looking for a sliver of hope in a lumberyard at this point.

PS-Thanks Lucas for this. After a miserable performance in the so-called "top-tier," it was fun to watch a Twins affiliate walk-off with a win.

Hopefully Duran is just working on some stuff. He's got a bit of a track record with walking guys but it's not quite Alex Meyer levels of concern. Still, I worry about flamethrowers who struggle with command because that seems to be one of the hardest things to improve while maintaining the same effectiveness.

The way I see it .... If 2 of Duran / Balazovic / Winder  / Enlow / Canterino / Sands turn out to be better than mid-rotation SPs we are in good shape.  My hope is a couple top of the rotation guys and a couple other solid SPs or back of the BP guys.  Maybe that's unrealistic but we would be in great shape.  It all does not rest on Duran.

Louie did not have his typical strike two guys out per inning game but he was much more efficient walking no one and only allowing three hits for a 0.5 WHIP.  That is crazy dominant and pretty efficient too.  Speaking of efficient Winder almost made it 7 innings last night too but ran out of gas in that last inning and gave up some runs.  He didn't K as many guys as normal either but making it six and almost seven is probably a better outcome anyway.  They both pitched really well and Louie gives hope that they have another good hard throwing pitcher on the way up.

Palacios was having a tough night until his hit just barely made it past the centerfielder.  Had to feel great to get that the game winning run after not having a hit all night.  His bat has been a solid presence in that lineup so far this year and if he keeps it going another month I have to believe they will move him up.

Also nice to see Helman move back over the Mendoza line with his three hit night.  He has been a steaky hitter to start the year but if he takes off could be a good one.  The top of the order in High A have been in a big funk and it is affecting their ability to get rally's started and generate wins.  Hopefully they turn things around soon.

I too was bummed by Duran's night but he just started pitching this year and his body is getting used to the routine so his arm might not have been quite the same.  Let's give him a month and see if he settles in or if control is going to be a legitimate concern.  He still needs to master that third pitch to be truly effective at the MLB level so the Twins are likely more interested in getting him innings and refining that pitch than other outcomes anyway.

Not to be overly pessimistic but there are so many times we've said this about a group of prospects, assuming 2-3 out of 5 or 6 have to turn out. Often times only 1-2 of them even sticks in the majors.

I wonder if coaches have approached him to take a little bit off the velo to get better command?  I do not know if that is the issue, but if you cannot throw your 100 mph for a strike or near a strike it does not matter.  To make things worse if you miss up and in with one of those you can end a career simply because you cannot control your pitch.

I have no disagreement which is why I said it might not be realistic.  However, the point I was emphasizing is that our future does not rest with Duran.  How this group turns out is far more influential on the future of the team.  I don't remember a time when we had this many pitching prospect I thought had a chance to be impact (mid-rotation or better).  At this moment, I believe a couple of them are going to be really good SPs and a couple others will be solid contributors.

The prospect I see as most pivotal is Lewis.  He is going to play CF or SS.  We don't have other prospects for these positions that seem like they could be impact players.  Lewis losing this year really sucks.  I would be for trading Berrios if we received a really good SS or CF prospect.

Duran could end up being a closer.  That would be just fine is Balazovic and Winder are top of the rotation guys.  Then, if a couple of Canterino / Enlow / Sands / Valimont / Jax / Barnes / etc end up being solid MLB starters, we are going to be in a great position.  With all that cheap talent we would have a significant budget for some very good free agents.

Out of curiosity I looked back at an old prospect list, choosing 2014 since I remember a crop of promising players coming up around that time. Out of our top prospects there were several promising pitchers: Alex Meyer, Kohl Stewart, Berrios, Lewis Thorpe (holy cow he's been around a while), Trevor May, Felix Jorge, Stephen Gonsalves, Michael Tonkin, Fernando Romero, and J.T. Chargois. In 2015 guys like Tyler Duffey, Tyler Jay, Taylor Rogers, Jake Reed, Nick Burdi, Huascar Ynoa start showing up on the lists. A lot of these guys looked like sure things to at least make a bullpen or back of a rotation. That AAA to MLB jump is tough.

If his arm would have held up I believe Alex Meyer would have made the jump.  How good he would have been is hard to say but I think mid rotation would have been likely but in the end his arm couldn't take it so it didn't matter as he didn't make it.

Stewart's peripherals were never good.  It was always hope that he would develop.  His K rate pretty poor through most of the system but he did keep his ERA in check so there was always hope but again he did not work out.

Romero looked like a sure thing.  Floor was supposed to be elite reliever.  The K rate and everything looked good even a couple of games in MLB and then the wheels fell off.  He was never the same again and another one bites the dust.

Thorpe and Gonslaves had great numbers through the minors but they were never hard throwers.  K rates were good to great but I don't think the stuff is going to translate well for either of them. They were two guys I think a lot of us were banking on as sure things for at least a solid 5th starter role but they never worked out.

Jorge was another guy who was borderline as his peripherals showed issues but I believe he made the top 10 Twins prospects list and his floor appeared to be reliever but he never made it either.

I never liked May much as a prospect as his control was bad IMO but lots of other people liked him.  He made it to elite reliever so better than most on this list.  Duffy and Rogers have been pretty good as relievers but yeah we were hoping for starters but at least a level of success.  Chargios Burdi and Tonkin made it but wouldn't say they were difference makers.

Berrios stands alone as the only one to make a difference out of that group.  Ynoa might make it as well but will have to wait and see yet.

You are right there were a lot of guys to hope and dream on that didn't didn't hit their ceiling, some guys hit their floors and lots of them didn't make it or make a difference at all.  I agree with you that the jump from AAA to MLB is a tough one.  Playing against the best of the best leaves little room for error.   Call it blind hope or optimism but I do like the guys we have coming up better than your list above as the K rates are there.  The velocity is there.  The pitch mix is there.  I think this is the best group of quality pitchers we have had in the system in maybe ever.  I have to believe at least a couple of those guys work out.  If not then this team is in real trouble.

I didn't see the whole start but it looked like they were having him throw a lot of sliders, especially early in counts, and he was having trouble getting strikes with them, leading him to fall behind a lot.  He still needs to be able to get strikes with his third best pitch too, but I'm not too worried that he'll be able to throw strikes with his 4-seamer and "splinker" based on this start, or his previous starts where he was utilizing them a lot more.

There were several BP arms but not as many SPs.  I hated the Tyler Jay pick and I just did not see Stewart / Gonsalves / Thorpe as the same level prospect as Duran / Balazovic / Canterino / Winder.  I see a second group of Enlow / Jax / Ober / Sands / Rijo/ Raya as being more on par with Stewart / Gonsalves / Thorpe.  If nothing else the point is there are a lot of guys that look like they COULD play at the MLB level and quite a few that could be impact players.  I guess part of it is that it's a lot more fun the believe in the potential than it is to curse past failure.

Kohl Stewart made a start for the Cubs on Monday and beat the Padres 7-2. He went 5 innings for the win, only giving up 1 unearned run on 3 hits and a walk, striking out 2. He even made a dazzling behind-the-back look what I found catch of a hot grounder, throwing out the smiling batter at 1B. His sinker looked heavy and effective.

Appreciate the heads up.  If you look closer though he only had 2 K's so everyone was hitting his stuff which when it goes right to the defense is not a big deal but when it doesn't I'd say he gives up a big inning.  For comparison sake at AAA this year he and Barnes have about the same number of K's and Barnes has a ERA is better.  Mainly due to the fact that Kohl gave up 3 HR's (good contact).  My guess is his good game is short lived but nice to see him doing well.  He was under the microscope in MN because we needed pitching so badly, maybe time and little less pressure can help him stay in MLB.
