  • Welcome to the New Twins Daily

    John Bonnes

    Aaaanndd, welcome back!

Twins Daily looks a little different today. Our upgraded software platform understands mobile phones and social media exist in the world. For the most part, it works the same, but now is a good time to remind us all that Twins Daily is more than just daily news about the Twins. It’s a community built on three pillars: read, react and write. You need not participate in all three, but they’re available, and if you’re willing to reach out, you’ll find a far richer experience. So let’s talk about them.

    Twins Video

    Read
Obviously, there are the stories. The site was founded by four bloggers, all of whom understood the value of providing unique coverage of the Twins. Non-traditional voices - whether they are sabermetric, prospect news, mechanical break analysis, cynical, hopeful, satirical, whimsical – are the core of what we are. We want to be a place where coverage of baseball is expanded in new ways. And we try to foster that organically, by encouraging our readers to….

    React
At the end of every story, you’ll find a comment area where you can react to our stories, provided you register. But we want you to be in the driver’s see, too, so we also have our forums, where you can ask your own questions, post your own opinions, and explore your own topics. The rules are pretty simple: don’t be an a-hole. Our moderators work hard to keep it civil and our community works hard to keep them welcoming. We want you to find your voice, because we want some of you to…

    Write
Our blog area provides a place for those called to write to further develop their writing style. Any member can start their own blogs and post when and how they want. It’s a little like playing in the minors – the crowds are smaller, but that also means it’s a good place to make mistakes or try a writing style that might be out of your comfort zone. The comments are generally encouraging, and when we think you’re ready, you’ll be invited to contribute regularly to the front page, where we pay for your work.

Twins Daily goes beyond the traditional publish-only model that corporate media embraces because we’re trying to do something a little different. We’re trying to develop a community that can gather, share and ultimately support itself. You, just be reading this, are already part of that community. We hope you’ll continue exploring and reaching out to other Minnesota baseball fans. We’re glad you’ve joined us.

For even more about what the new site can do, we encourage you to stop by our new help page.

Yes, how do we get to the first unread post. Also, how can we tell if there are any unread comments on a post before we click.

.... and now, in this new world..... we aren't "friends" anymore:( ;)

The new system has a "follow" feature, which makes more sense when you examine it. It's like a Twitter follow and you can set notifications when people you follow post, you can filter to people you follow in the activity stream from the menu, etc. Lots of stuff you can do in the new system that makes following a much more sensical approach.

    Yikes.

Took three attempts to log on.

Color scheme is nuts on my eyes, as in quite literally hurting my eyes, even with my computer glasses on.

Then a tutorial just to use the site to have conversation. I've been chatting with many on this forum for more than 20 years. Suppose all good things must come to an end.

Because, after changing forum platforms four times over 15 years and getting the same questions every time, I finally learned my lesson and got out in front of those questions by writing guides how to use the ridiculous number of features included in the software package.

If you actually read any of the tutorials, you'll notice they primarily talk about underlying site features and assume you know how to do things like... type a message.

First of all, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you John.

Second, most of the changes seem really positive, IMO. I, like everyone else, just need to read and play and get used to the changes. My phone already seems to like the new format, LOL.

But the one complaint I have to make is the color choices used. Look, I'm a TD fan and follower and devotee and will continue to be one. I believe I've been one since fall of about 2013. I've been here through the good and the bad. And I've been a Twins fan and follower for more than 50yrs through TV, radio, and print media. But the Twins, with all their varient uniform style changes have ALWAYS been red and blue and white with gray mixed in. There has NEVER been any sort ORANGE included.

Please keep growing the site, but also, please make changes to  this new site that is Twins-centric in regards to presentation! Sorry, but the orange color just doesn't make sense.

Various versions of red, white and blue with new gold fit. Orange doesn't.

When I heard about the change I was skeptical.  Too many times sites ruin it with their changes.  However, this is a major upgrade.  Well done.  One complaint I have now though is the amount of ads on mobile. Never saw ads before and now they seem all over the place

The orange you see is just one of the color choices for banner announcements. Once everyone is more or less acclimated, those orange line items will go away ... however, they may be replaced with other announcements from time to time in green or blue :)

Thankfully, our tools are much more robust now and while spam will never go away entirely (spammers even slip through the filters of Facebook on a regular basis), it has already decreased considerably and I'm implementing more filters and ways to thwart them as we determine the new software's leakiest bits.

By the way, please let me know how speed is for you today.

This is the first day of "regular" traffic on the site and for all of yesterday, the server was using a small amount of resources to run background tasks like reindexing the search engine.

Speed should be good under normal circumstances but I'd like to hear of any difficulties you're having.

The orange is for announcements and we have several color options available to us. You see a lot of orange right now because I'm trying to draw attention to key components of the new site to ease the transition for some of the more confusing aspects for long-time users. Once launch dies down, expect to see orange banners rather infrequently.

(you may have noticed one of them is already gone)

Nice job to all. I like the red and white but miss seeing some blue.

Oh, you'll see blue from time to time when we post announcements ...

Has anyone else been having issues today with the homepage only showing posts from Randball's Stu? It was like that for me for several hours this morning, but I think it may be back to normal now. I couldn't figure out if I had some sort of filter turned on or if the site was glitching out somehow. I love Stu's posts as much as the next guy, but I don't mind some real news mixed in too ?

Overall, nice job on the new site! I'm looking forward to seeing what it's capable of!

Someone let me know about it ~30 minutes ago. I changed some group settings this morning, which sent the article permissions into panic mode for whatever reason.

    It should be fixed now.

Blue will be introduced in time but some of the key features that I expect to use blue more prominently weren't part of the launch goal.

Suggestion - put a link to the top of the page and to the front page on the bottom of the comment area.  Otherwise I like the format.

There's a red tab with a white up arrow that appears as you scroll down the page (left side near bottom of screen). Tapping/clicking that will scroll you back to the top of the page.

Sounds good. I think one of the best parts of the new site is how clean and uncluttered it looks. Can't wait for you to get rid of that orange bar, it definitely catches your eye and serves it purpose but for some reason it just "grates" on me. Have a great day.

Strange, that’s not how it works for me. OS and browser?
