  • Twins Claim Jordan Schafer from Braves

    Seth Stohs

The Minnesota Twins have claimed outfielder Jordan Schafer, according to LaVelle E. Neal from the Star Tribune (via twitter). In a tweet, Twins PR director Dustin Morse has confirmed.

Schafer, at his best, can be a good replacement for the recently departed Sam Fuld, who was traded to the Oakland A's at the trade deadline. He was DFA'd last week by the Atlanta Braves.

    Twins Video

Schafer is just 27-years-old. He debuted with the Houston Astros in 2009. He has spent the 2013 and 2014 seasons with the Atlanta Braves. In 2013, he hit .247/.331/.346 (.677) with eight doubles, three triples and three home runs in 94 games for the Braves. He stole 22 bases.

This year, he had just 93 plate appearances in 63 games for the Braves before being let go. He was hitting just .163, though he does have 15 stolen bases.

He has been a top prospect in the game earlier in his career. He actually turned himself in for taking hGH and served a 50-game suspension.

The Twins did well with Sam Fuld, and they are likely hoping that Schafer can provide outfield depth and speed for the remainder of the season. Chris Parmelee does not need to be the Twins backup centerfielder

The Twins had 39 players on their 40 man roster, so the roster is again full. The team will need to send someone down to Rochester to make room on the 25-man roster.

Schafer didn't have options, though, so he would have had to pass through the waivers.  That hurt his stock because if he did have options, he would have been highly desirable, but spending a year-plus on the MLB DL took away some options.

I know.  But he still had less than 3 years service time back then (meaning he could be outrighted once without his consent if he passed through waivers).

I am guessing that had his former drafting team not claimed him in Nov. 2012 (and at least 12 other NL teams passed on him), he may have entered the Alex Burnett / Liam Hendriks waiver vortex, where a few teams exchange claims on him and soon after try to pass him through waivers again so they can remove him from the roster but outright him to AAA.

My point has been that he's in an even worse spot now (from a team's perspective): not only is he without options, he can reject any outright assignment and become a free agent (not to mention he's 2 years older and no better on the field).  Teams hate to lock in guys like that to the 40-man roster if they don't have to, particularly if they are also arb-eligible.  Scott Diamond was in a similar spot this past winter but at least he was still pre-arb.  Emilio Bonifacio is a far more useful/valuable player and even he cleared waivers and signed a minor league deal last winter.

I'll drop it now, but suffice to say, barring a strong finish to 2014, I doubt Schafer gets claimed this winter.

    Oh my.

He's a fill in player to keep a bench spot warm for now after the Fuld trade. He costs nothing but money for the rest of the season...what's left of it.

He was a top prospect at one time. I've mentioned the Twins actually signing a quality CF/4th OF candidate for next season, along with a possible milb contract Rochester option for depth. Possibly not necessary with Hicks and Rosario any longer.

What if this kid actually hits, or is signed to a milb deal and does well at Rochester as a fill in player?

Again, this is just a flyer and fill-in player, not a big option.

I can't say this is a bad move because it might mean less SSs in the outfield.

Perhaps Schafer will click with our hitting coaches and bat a little better. If not, say goodbye and send him away.

He's stolen a lot of bases, so he'll be a great pinch-run option.

I do wonder who we'll send down to AAA. Colabello maybe?

Exactly. Schafer is a low-risk temp defensively in the OF. Excellent pinch runner, base stealer. And if Bruno can find the magic words to make him a .250 hitter, he could become a semi-regular player. Otherwise, he's gone next season after Hicks learns to have a plan at the plate, or if some other OF in AA or AAA can hit well enough to promote.

Meanwhile, Schafer clearly does NOT have a plan at the plate. Not a good one, anyway. I saw him stand there and get struck out on 3 pitches from Hahn. That was not a plan, that was a guy that had no idea what to do, so he just stood there. Heck, I could do that, except I'd be leaping backwards and crapping my pants with every pitch... Those guys throw hard!

I'm guessing that Schafer is a fallback option and won't get much in the way of playing time. He's the kind of guy you stash at the back of the bench and forget about until you need him, if you need him at all.

Small sample size, I know (2 games), but it appears Schaefer is our starting LF'er, not the guy described above.

Eh, Gardy wants to see what he has in Schafer. I expected him to get a few starts early on.

Is there any significance to his performance in a few games? Shouldn't there be enough games in which to see Schafer play? Shouldn't Gardy already know?

I don't doubt your reasoning Brock. I am only concerned that his play the last two months will somehow take precedence over the last 4 years. An OK 100 plate appearances might stop the Twins from looking for a different solution.

He didn't execute the bunt when we needed him to but I thought his swings looked pretty good last night, plus he can flat out fly. Wow. But yeah, if Santana is playing CF, where does he play? Anyway, I think he can be a pretty good 4th/5th OF and pinch runner. Way better than Mastroianni, maybe as good as Fuld, we'll see.

    Define "few."

Well, somewhat comically he has an OPS of ~.850 in his first 20 PAs with the team so I'd wager he's going to get a few more starts.

As long as Arcia doesn't sit at his expense - as he did today - I can't say I really care. I don't think Schafer is going to amount to anything but eh, whatever.

    Sitting Arcia against a righty.

    I just. I just...

    COME ON, GARDY.

    1. Arcia said he tweaked his lower back on a swing in Friday's game. But that it's feeling better and he's taking BP in the cages today.

Maybe just being cautious with him.

In postgame, Gardy said Arcia was unavailable to pinch hit today, and no decisions on the roster moves until tomorrow (but Mauer appears to be one of them, along with Milone).

In fairness, he was apparently the 41st best player for the Braves.  Might that be an upgrade for our 25-man?

Milone is already on the active roster (for Correia) amiright? Mauer for ? With the one-man bench game just completed, I hope the Twins trade, DFA, disable or option a pitcher. Sneaky pick--Samuel Deduno.

Sounds like Gardy is putting the botched bunt mostly on Nuñez: “It wasn’t a squeeze,” Gardenhire said. “There was no sign. He tried to drag bunt with Nunez at third. Nunez has to see the ball (go) down there.”

That said, the same article also mentions Schafer's near helplessness vs. LH pitching (1-18 w/ 8Ks). A fourth outfielder, who can't hit and isn't that great in the field isn't worth it. However, since coming to the Twins, Schafer is 5-16 and hasn't made any glaring misplays in the field.

I'm not ready to give him a starting spot next year or even guarantee him a spot on the active roster, but maybe the change of scenery is exactly what he needed. If he isn't keeping Arcia or Santana on the bench, I am fine with him playing. I also don't expect him to continue hitting, but hey, these things happen.

I like his base running. I hate his lack of bunting ability.

Welcome to Braves fans' misery.  Pinch hit for a pitcher to use Schafer to move a runner = Net loss from the pitcher hitting and bunting on his own.  Not many hitters who you can say that about.

In fairness to Schafer, he was no longer in the 25 best players, but he would have been in the 40.  He just didn't have options, and he wasn't in those top 25, so he had to be put through waivers to send him down.

Very good point, and yesterday I was inclined to just leave it at that, but I thought some more and the lack of options attached to a player reduces his value, both to his current team and to any teams thinking about acquiring him.  He might have been one of the 40 "best" players the Bravos had, maybe around #37 or lower, and they just couldn't keep him.  If he was #35 or above I would expect they'd find some other roster move to make.  But from a dollars and sense point of view he almost by definition was deemed by their front office to be #41 to keep.

We're both looking at it from a very fine-grain point of view.  And my main POV continues to be that I look forward to the day when acquiring even some good team's 26th best player doesn't improve our 25-man roster enough to justify the paperwork to acquire him.  We're not close to that yet, even if we see help coming on the horizon.

Completely get what you're saying, but I will tell you that there are three other outfielders, two of whom are center fielders, on the Braves' 40-man roster that are in AAA.  Acquiring Bonifacio, who would take really the only value that Schafer was providing to the 25-man - speed, made Schafer more dispensable than the other three on the 40-man, all three of whom I'd place below Schafer in organizational charting.  He's likely about the 27th active, and if he was an arm, they'd find a way to make it work, but there's more of him on their 40-man that makes him more removable in their particular case.

I will say that it was very fun yesterday watching Schafer, Santana and Nunez stealing bases and showing an element of speed in the lineup that we haven't seen in a while.  Jaso had no chance to throw any of them out.

I doubt Schafer is with the team next year but I'm all for having play quite a bit of center the rest of the way so Santana can get back to SS.  Santana is turning into the feel good story for the 2014 Twins.
