  • Trade Deadline Thread: The Rumor Mill is Working Overtime

    Andrew Thares

We are now just two days away from the 2019 MLB Trade Deadline. That means the rumor mill is off the charts right now with countless rumors of Team X being interested in Player Y. With the Minnesota Twins right in the tick of a postseason push, and a clear need to upgrade their pitching staff, they find themselves right in the thick of things as far as trade rumors go. It could make it quite difficult to keep up with everything, and everyone the Twins are interested in. Don't worry, we have you covered with all the latest up to date rumors surrounding the Twins.

Sometimes these rumors can seem like they are just that, rumors. It is no surprise that the Twins are doing their due diligence and checking in on each and every player they are interested in potentially trading for. While most of the time these don't end up amounting to anything, it is still important to keep track of, because it can give you a good idea what the Twins are thinking, and who they might be about ready to trade for. Just take Sergio Romo for example. On Saturday morning it was reported that the Twins were interested in Romo, and by the end of the day he was the newest member of the Minnesota Twins. Things can happen that quickly. So, let's take a look at some of the rumors currently circulating around the Twins.

    Noah Syndergaard

The New York Mets have done a fine job stirring the pot of late. They have been linked to being sellers, which would make players like Noah Syndergaard, Zach Wheeler and Edwin Diaz all available. However, on Sunday they then went out and acquired Marcus Stroman. Yet they are still saying they are interested in moving Syndergaard. This one is a real head scratch, and it is anyones guess on what the Mets will do before Wednesday, because quite frankly I don't think they know what they are going to do. LaVelle Neal of the Star Tribune reported that the Mets were interested in a package for Syndergaard that included both Royce Lewis and Alex Kirilloff. It is unlikely that the Twins would even consider moving both of them for Noah Syndergaard, but you can't really blame the Mets for starting the negotiations by asking high.

    Robbie Ray

    https://twitter.com/jonmorosi/status/1155159228069187585

Jon Morosi of MLB Network posted this tweet on Saturday, siting that the Twins were among the list of teams who had inquired about Robbie Ray. There hasn't been much follow up to this over the past couple of days, so it could have very well just been the Twins asking about his price. If the Twins were to acquire Ray they would be getting a one of the top strikeout heavy starting pitchers in the game. However, what's different between Ray and other elite strikeout throwers like Max Scherzer or Justin Verlander, is Ray has a terrible time with control. Ray could be a real wildcard for the Twins if they could trade for him and the remaining year and a half left before he hits free agency.

    Mike Minor

    https://twitter.com/jonmorosi/status/1155281262564663296

Much like Robbie Ray, the Twins were reported to be one of the teams looking to trade for Mike Minor. With Marcus Stroman off the table, and no real clarity on the Noah Syndergaard front, Minor might very well be the best starting pitcher available on the trade market. It wouldn't surprise me if the Twins are in on the Rangers lefty, especially given Thad Levine's ties to the Rangers organization.

    Ken Giles & Kirby Yates

A few weeks back it was reported that the Twins had checked in on both Ken Giles and Kirby Yates, but there hasn't been much headway on those fronts in the time since. These could be two relievers to keep an eye on in the coming days if the Twins were to pull off a trade for a big name reliever.

    Jason Vargas

    https://twitter.com/martinonyc/status/1155942953115774976

Interesting development this afternoon. Still not clear who that the other team is, but could make sense as an acquisition for the Twins, so stay tuned.

    *Update*

Vargas is reportedly heading to the Phillies, so cross his name off the list of potential Twins bullpen acquisitions.

We’re 48 hours from the deadline and Stroman is the only big name to move.

Can anyone remember a deadline coming together this slowly?

This one hard deadline sucks. Let's move it back to August 30th if it's that difficult to know whether you're a buyer or seller 60% of the way through a season.

I think it’s just an odd year, especially with the Mets being crazy and San Diego considering getting in on the fun, too.

The Twins don't just need pitching this year. Losing two of your top three pitching prospects, who both have the potential to be better than Ray and cost controlled for six years, is a steep price. I wouldn't pay that for 1.5 years of much more expensive pitching. I don't think a few starts in the playoffs by Ray instead of Pineda is worth losing the potential for sustained success. Young pitchers with high-end upside are very hard to find. If the Twins' window is going to be extended past next year, it's going to take several of those young pitchers panning out. Neither is a sure thing but you've got to have some dice to roll and those guys have a realistic chance to be 40% of a playoff rotation.

The problem with this is that those guys likely not the ground running when they hit MLB. You've got to factor that development time in as well. I think you probably keep the best the option there, but I could definitely see them moving one of our top 3 pitching prospects for help that will be here longer than this year. Sure... you don't move them all, but for the right guy, you move one.

This is going to be a silly post, but my Twins ticket representative Dave, said the Twins are not getting Noah Syndegaard. Shouldn't probably even mention it. Not sure if he was serious or just joking around because i said I wasn't going to add any more ticket plans unless the Twins traded for Noah Syndegaard(I was also not serious). It is almost like how as a ticket representative do you know they are not getting Syndegaard.

My two cent's my speculation after the laughing ended, is I don't think the Met's will back down on the ask for Syndegaard from the Twins in wanting both Royce Lewis and Alex Kirloff. Hopefully we get Minor from Texas or Ray from Arizona, would really like to see the Twins add a lefty from outside the organization and move Perez as the additional lefty in the bullpen.

Did I miss a report that said they wanted them both? I remember seeing something about one of them headlining a deal... but not both.

My guess is Dave has less intel on the subject than everyone on this board, unless he follows this site, MLBTR, the beat writers and national pundits, in which case he only has exactly as much intel on the subject as the rest of us.

My further guess is that statistically speaking the odds that he is right are high, which is probably why he feels safe making such grand declarations.

I read that one as well, but of course that's what they'd ask for. I'm sure they also asked for every team's top two prospects, or a young stud arm that's already up.

I think if you put Migual Sano as part of a deal you land an ace.  Sano, Martin Perez and Nick Gordon.  Whatya get for that...

Not an ace, maybe not even an MLB player. Most teams trade established players for prospects, not other MLB players and guys in Triple A.

But ... the Mets. So, you never know, I guess.

Personally, I'd rather get Edwin Diaz if I've got to give up Kiriloff. He's dominant & he's under control through 2022. Imagine him & Rogers at the back end of the bullpen the next 2-4 years.

    Tick Tock FO.....

Are we going to hoard assets to be a one (insert game or series) and out playoff team 3-4 times over the next 7-8 years or are we going to sacrifice some extended above average-ness for taking a WS shot!

Business answer is probably the former....Baseball fan answer is probably the latter. Will be fun to find out if money or desire for history wins out!

I would be uber focused on another RP and call it a day at this point.

I know a lot of people don't want to hear that, but not only is it the biggest need, but the market itself is showing teams are either not selling, or being crazy in their demands.

The Mets are just...IDK....the Mets. Despite looking like a dumpster fire losing team they have acquired the first big name viable arm on the market. Are they crazy like a fox with a plan nobody can see, or are they just crazy?

We can talk all day long about the Twins rotation. And we can point to successes and failures, highs and lows, etc. (Guys have good and bad streaks. Its a long season)! And I know playoff baseball can be different than the season. But tbe truth is the Twins not only have tbe best rotation they have had in YEARS, but they also have one of the deepest, most productive rotations available.

Pitching still wins games. But in this new era, we have also seen where a deep and quality pen can trump a rotation at times. This team needs a stud arm for the pen to go along with Rogers, Romo, and what we have on hand. The Twins still have 2 months to sort through their pen and make final decisions on who and what sticks for the playoffs. At least one SP will slide to the pen that happens. It also happens, later than I wished it would have happened, we have some arms who are starting to look ready.

Looking at MLB Trade Rumors a few minutes ago.....and nobody is moving yet. So far, I think the Twins move to get Romo is as big a move as anyone. There will be activity today (it's past midnight!) and tomorrow, I'm sure, but so far trades have been few and far between.

Greinke has Twins on no trade list, but that was probably from when they looked bad, it may pay to checkout if his stance is willing to change and what it would take to get it to change.  If you pickup up all the money in the contract, prospect return might not be out of site, but 2 prospects in the 7 - 15 range.  That to me would be doable.

I think the twins will look at any trade open to them.  Here is what I do know, they will not overpay, they will do deals that are beneficial to the overall organization, if there is a truce ace available at a reasonable cost they will do it.  However, this year, it just isn't.  I loved the deal for Sergio, gives us another reliable reliever, flips a bat that we would have struggled to keep or lost him or someone else to rule 5 eligibility, and was able to get a pitcher that is now one of our top 10 pitching prospects, plus a lotto ticket.  Yes we gave up Diaz but we have other bats above him, it was a good deal for both teams.  Ultimately based on the june article of the 40 man crunch for next year, I think we will see another trade or two, just to flip assets that we will no longer have control of at the end of this year.  Ultimately most should be happy.

This is the start of a window for us, there is no reason to throw away assets unless you are fairly certain you can win it all.  This year, I am not sure even with an ace and another elite closer you can beat the astros if they also trade for players.  You also still have the Yankees and and Dodgers.  Even if we got those 2 players I would put the odds of the twins winning the title at 15%, in the current form I think the twins are maybe 5-7% chance of winning it all and with some additional relievers, pushing 10%.  There is no reason to blow our wad this year for minimally moving the needle.  In the next year or two, will be the years to strike is my guess, plus our prospects will be closer to mlb ready and ultimately more valuable if they can keep up their performances.

Any team can come off Greinke's no-trade list at the right price for an extension. I'm not sure I'm interested in that price.

I'm guessing that call has been made. Would love it if this was in the works.

I really doubt this. Stroman doesn't have any leverage in the matter.

He can throw tantrums. That's a form of leverage.

His reaction (resulting in a closed clubhouse) to being traded to the Mets instead of his beloved Yankees exemplifies why I didn't have huge interest in him, and might have played into why the Twins didn't go hard for him either; you look at the signings of guys like Cruz and Marwin and they seem to be good clubhouse guys. Whereas Stroman's had a certain reputation for a while now, even if the insiders don't speak openly.

After that long-toss toward the outfield the other day, Bauer's another guy I don't expect to see in a Twins uniform for similar reasons, though clearly that's become a discussion more for the off-season than this deadline.

He also has the Yankees, Red Sox and Phillies on his no trade list. I don't think it's safe to assume he only put the Twins on there because he didn't think they are a contender

Great teams win pennants but good teams can win the world series.

The point is that the playoffs will always be a crapshoot.  Your odds of winning it all increase greatly if your in the mix year after year.  A mid market team like the twins cannot and should not go all in on a particular year.  There are positions of strength they can and will deal from but at a certain point, the cost is just not worth it for some of the names that are available.  This FO has a short reputation of making prudent moves and I would think that will continue to remain true through this deadline.

That said, I'd certainly like to see them fortify the relief corp.  Greinke and a reliever or two would be a good get and wouldn't kill the bottom line.

So now we're 23 hours from the deadline and after a quick scan of MLBTR, still absolutely nothing of note.

    Come on, this is boring...

I hope im wrong but i feel like this is going to be an underwhelming deadline..Certainly not going out on a limb there!

Be a baseball fan! Where teams don't sign free agents, don't make trades, and generally just want to be competitive... But not too competitive!

I'm holding out for a flurry of deals in the last 8-10 hours but with NOTHING coming in, sure seems like it's going to be underwhelming.
