  • Report: Ryan Pressly Traded To Houston

    Seth Stohs

If you were wondering why Ryan Pressly was not used in the 10th inning of Friday night's loss to the Red Sox, well, there was a good reason.

Moments after the game, Ken Rosenthal reported that Pressly was traded to the Houston Astros.

    Twins Video

Per multiple reports, the Twins will receive RHP Jorge Alcala and CF Gilberto Celestino. Per MLB Pipeline, Alcala is (was?) the Astros #10 prospect while Celestino ranked #15.

Jorge Alcala will turn 23 tomorrow. The Dominican native has 82 strikeouts in 79 1/3 innings for the Astros High A and AA affilaites. He is the #8 Astros prospect per Baseball America. Some reports indicate he is another hard-thrower who can hit 100 mph.

Celestino is 19, also from the Dominican. He has played in the short-season New York/Penn League and played in three games at AA earlier this year. He has hit a combined .299 with eight doubles and four homers. Also 14 steals in 36 games.

Ryan Pressly was said to be the Twins player that almost all contending teams were asking about. His velocity and spin rate made him, along with having one more year of arbitration, made him intriguing to a lot of teams.

The former Twins Rule 5 pick has really made strides in 2018 after looking the part and showing glimpses over his years with the Twins.

Pressly is a Texas native, so he's kind of heading home and will fit into an already strong Astros bullpen.

I like the trade. Let's give Curtiss or Bard some innings and see if they figure it out. As an article on this site point out a week or so ago, we lost Rodriguez and Rosario without giving either a chance.

I thought Presley had talent but if we were ever in a playoff series and he came in to put out a fire i would've been very worried. Looks like selling high to me. I'm not sure this says anything about next year they took the time to evaluate him and here you are. That extra year just means more return.

Speaking of Rule 5, I wonder if Alcala would have been available in Rule 5 this winter if he had stayed with Houston. Obviously there is advantage to acquiring him without Rule 5 restrictions, but I am just wondering how that contributed to Houston making him available. (I theorized the same last year about Littell and Moya.)

I was thinking the exact same thing. Houston was probably going to lose him anyway.

I'm not knocking the acquisition with those thoughts because I have no idea how anybody down on the farm is going to perform until they reach the big club and just because a guy goes rule 5 doesn't mean you are going to get him.

I'm just assuming that if I was trying to make a trade... I'm going to try and give up the players I want to give up.

A guy about to reach rule 5 on a team like Houston with very little roster space would qualify as a guy that I would want or even need to give up.

However... none of these thoughts are reasons to assume that we got duped.

I wanted Pressly for next year and all I can do now is assume that the Twins scouts identified the players they wanted and felt that Houston overpaid enough for us to lose a 2019 player.

Does anyone know the age cutoff that defines the difference between needing 4 years or 5 years before being rule V eligible?

I know HS/international FAs require 5 years. College players are 4 years. If the cutoff is 19, then he needs to be added this season unless he was 18 when he signed.

He was born July 28, 1995 (GOD AM I OLD)

He was signed December 3, 2014.

The cutoff is 19... He was 19 when he signed.

A little shocked by the Escobar move. Really thought it would be Dozier, at least first. Hate losing Escobar as he was one of my favorite players. Hope they re-sign him next off season!

The Pressly move shocked me. I saw him closing next year and to end this year. I can't hate the return though, looks solid and perhaps even a little surprising. The second controllable year seems the obvious difference.

Less enthused with the return on Escobar, but seems pretty good for a 2 month rental to me.

I think the Twins look at Alcala and see his ceiling is a mid rotation starter and floor another Bullpen arm.  An arm that would have another 5 to 6 years of control and can be a part of wave 2.  On top of that you are getting a young hitter with above average hit, run, arm and fielding tools.  So his ceiling is starting outfielder and floor probably 4th outfielder.  I think that is tough to turn down for a year and a half of a potential dominant bullpen arm and the last half of this year he does us no good as we are out of it anyway.

The other thing is bullpen arms can be found in the off-season and wouldn't have to costs us prospects.  I think the FO made the right choice by trading as Presleys value would never be higher than it is right now at the deadline.

IMO - Pressly going to a team that values the Duece like no other team will be great for him and his spin-rate/swing&miss are awesome this season he has always looked a little too nervous in close/late situations for me

I guess if Charlie Morton can go from spot-starter/#4-5/long reliever to World Series stopper, Pressly should thrive

I wish him the best in the playoffs with the Astros...I will be interested in seeing where they use him

Thinking while writing this maybe we'd have been better off trading Pressly for Brent Strom

I think Berardino's source is correct, Alcala won't be Rule 5 eligible until next year. From the Cub Reporter:

    https://www.thecubreporter.com/book/export/html/3517

    RULE 5 DRAFT ELIGIBILITY

    1. A minor league player who was 18 or younger on the June 5th immediately prior to signing his first contract is eligible for selection starting with the 5th Rule 5 Draft following his first qualified season, and a minor league player who was 19 years or older on the June 5th immediately prior to signing his first contract becomes eligible for selection starting with the 4th Rule 5 Draft following his first qualified season.

    2. If a player signs his first contract after the conclusion of the season of the MLB or minor league club to which he is first assigned (even if he signs prior to the Rule 5 Draft), the next season is considered to be the player's "first qualified season" for Rule 5 eligibility purposes. (Depending on the minor league, the conclusion of a minor league club's season could be as early as the first week of August, or as late as the second week of September).

So while Alcala signed at age 19, he was only 18 on the preceding June 5th (his birthday is July 28 -- happy birthday, by the way!). And he signed after the conclusion on the 2014 season, so 2015 was his first qualifying season and this 2019 will be his 5th Rule 5 draft.

This is such lame logic. The Astros will be good for a long time. The Yankees and Red Sox will always be good. By this logic, we should trade everyone a curl up in a ball in the fetal position.

Not quite.  You just got to get the team in a position to be better than the Astros and the Yankees and the Red Sox and the Indians next season. And to do that the Twins need: a. 2 SPs better than Berrio, b. 2 RPs better than Rodney, plus c. at least one RH power bat and better 2.  Plenty of time to shed the bottom of the rotation and middle of the bullpen pieces, and the upcoming free agents, load with prospects and go get what you need this off-season.

That's planning and targeted asset divestiture and acquisition.  Not curling in the fetal position.  The TR years is a proof that half-assing it an living on a prayer never works.  Enough with that.

Dozier and/or Duke to Boston when the series is done?

More likely Duke.  Sounds like Boston isn't actively pursuing Dozier at the moment.  But maybe the Giants or Indians.

I was caught off guard by this trade. I knew teams were interested, but I thought the Twins would hang on since he is under control for another season.

    However, I was incorrect.

I trust the front office did their homework. The Twins got two of the Astros' top 20 prospects, which is saying something given that the Astros organization is absolutely stacked from top to bottom.

I hate to see them trade a viable bullpen arm for 2019, but I also can't fault them given the quality of the return.

    That shouldn’t be difficult.

I’d say they need 7 better than Rodney.

Both better prospects than any of the 3 they got for Escobar in my opinion.  I know rankings don't agree w/that, but whatever.  Only concern is they've now created another hole for next year.  But I suppose they can call up some data and sign the next Addison Reed and Fernando Rodney for next season.  My guess is Houston will get Pressly figured out and pitching better than he ever did here.  The stuff is there, just needs to be unlocked.

Might be good for him, a Texas guy, but not so much for Twins next year. Others can better say what’s in the pipeline, but he came of age this year and could have been groomed to close. Giving the meltdown yesterday, a 4-1 lead becoming a six run loss, I’m giving them another week and then I’m tuning outuntil winter trades. SAD! as a certain Washington man might say. I hope the players we received in return pan out, but that won’t be next year.

My question is are we punting on next year already? One of our best 2 relievers under control next year, and a guy that loved playing here that we could have resigned. Especially valuable with the struggles of Sano and impending departure of Dozier. I don't understand what we are doing here. And of course the obvious Why is belisle getting innings that the AAA guys deserve? I mean, it's great getting these single A guys that might never pan out as talented as they are, but what about next year?? I'm shaking my head at the 2 guys we dumped today. I'm all for getting rid of Rod, Duke, Dozier, Lynn, Santana.....but how things are moving, Gibby, our #2 starting pitcher is going to be next and I'm really against that. Go into next year with nothing but budget free agents and the AAA roster. Gives a person a lot to look forward to. Glad the farm will have profile to follow

It's called trading high. The core of 4, plus Rosario and Polanco are still alive and kicking.

As long as Sano and Buxton don't crap the bed again, we will make the playoffs next season. You may recognize them as TR's guys. I can't help but remember, you wanted to throw the towel in early last season when we were still in first place.
