  • Ranking the Trade Value of Twins Corner Outfielders

    Cody Christie

Minnesota has a plethora of corner outfielders populating the roster. It seems logical for the Twins to trade from this group before spring training, but which players have the most trade value?

    Twins Video

Shortly before the calendar turned to 2023, the Twins finalized a one-year, $11 million deal for outfielder Joey Gallo. He is coming off a terrible season where he posted a 79 OPS+ in 126 games for the Yankees and the Dodgers. However, he was an All-Star in 2021 who led the AL in walks and posted a 121 OPS+. Minnesota hopes to get Gallo back on track, but the 40-man roster was already packed with corner outfield options before he arrived.

The team is likely looking to deal from an area of strength, so how do the team’s current corner outfielders stack up according to trade value? All trade values and availability are from Baseball Trade Values. The rankings below on based on their current median trade value. It is not a ranking of the likelihood of each player being traded, but availability is also included for your reference.

    5. Matt Wallner
    Median Trade Value: 7.3
    Availability: Medium

Wallner’s trade value might be at the highest of any point in his career. He was named the organization’s minor-league player of the year and made his big-league debut in 2022. Some of the other corner outfielders have recently dealt with injuries, so that Wallner might have more long-term value for the Twins. This offseason might be the best time to trade him If Minnesota wants to capitalize on his peak value.

    4. Austin Martin
    Median Trade Value: 7.5
    Availability: Medium

Martin’s future defensive home might not be in a corner outfield spot, but there’s undoubtedly an opportunity for the Twins to include him in a trade this winter. There’s no question that Martin’s value dropped in 2022 as he entered the year as one of baseball’s top 55 prospects. He battled through a wrist injury and posted a .685 OPS at Double-A. Martin rebuilt some of his value in the Arizona Fall League with a .936 OPS and ten steals in 21 games. Another organization might believe in the potential Martin has shown in the past.

    3. Max Kepler
    Median Trade Value: 7.6
    Availability: High

Kepler seems redundant on the Twins roster with Gallo’s addition. Kepler is under team control for the next two seasons if his $10 million option ($1 million buyout) is picked up for 2024. He provides little value on the offensive side, with an OPS+ below 100 over the last two seasons. On defense, he is among baseball’s best by ranking second among AL right fielders according to SABR’s Defensive Index. Twins fans have likely soured on Kepler, but he is a solid big-league regular and has value on the trade market.

    2. Alex Kirilloff
    Median Trade Value: 11.9
    Availability: Very Low

Kirilloff is returning from a unique wrist surgery, so teams will likely be interested in acquiring him once they know he is healthy. His wrist has caused issues over the last two seasons, so his availability is the lowest on this list. In 104 big-league games, he has hit .251/.295/.398 (.694) with 18 doubles and 11 home runs. Some of those numbers are skewed by him trying to play through his wrist injury. Kirilloff is a former top prospect, and Minnesota hopes he can put his injury woes behind him to reach his full potential.

    1. Trevor Larnach
    Median Trade Value: 14.6
    Availability: Low

Like Kirilloff, injuries have limited Larnach in his first two big-league seasons. Last year, he hit .231/.306/.406 (.712) with 13 doubles and five home runs in 51 games. Larnach has been streaky at the plate by looking like one of the best hitters in the Twins line-up and then struggling mightily. Nearly every player on this list has a higher defensive value than Larnach, but his bat has the potential to be a middle-of-the-order slugger for most of the next decade. His trade value can be even higher at the end of the 2023 season if he can compile a fully healthy campaign.

Do you agree with the trade value rankings? Besides Kepler, will any of the other corner outfielders be traded? Leave a COMMENT and start the discussion.

I understand that Kepler & Gallo bring many of the same things to the value table making moving him enticing.  However, one of those things each brings to the table is actually showing up at the  table.  Each of them has played more games the last two years than Larnach & Kirlloff combined.  The prospect of trading Kepler and having to run guys like Gordon, Garlick or Contreras out to the corner outfield spots is not appealing. Unless that goal is something other  than winning baseball games.

I think Kepler is the most likely to be tradded.  Walner is young and inexpensive right now.  Martin hits from the right side and has a fairly high cieling, so I wouldn't trade him at least not this year.  Kirilloff and Larnach have high cielings. That leaves a Kepler package for pitching or a right handed OF bat.  I don't see him being traded for another OF lefthanded bat.  That wouldn't make sense to me.  We have some very nice prospects that could be added in a package deal but I would hold firm on the other four outfielders for now.

While Kirilloff and and Larnach have more value they also haven't been much worse or better than Kepler at the plate and they have a lot more years of control left.  The Twins thing to do would be to move the higher salaried player IMO.  Also Keplers ceiling appears to be known while Kirilloff, Larnach and Wallner are somewhat unknowns at this point. Certainly they could trade anyone of those players for the right deal I just think Kepler makes the most sense.

BTV is interesting for fans. I wonder how it compares to the evaluations of a team. The oft-stated match between the Twins and Marlins or the Twins and Padres may be a myth if Miami and San Diego have zero interest in any of the players on the Twins roster or vice versa. We have seen the value of Martin, Kepler, Kirilloff, and Larnach totally crash on BTV in less than one year. Thus, I'm not sure there is any value whatsoever in these players until they show their skills and health are still relevant. It seems like Miami could use a talent like Trevor Larnach or Max Kepler and the Twins could benefit from a player like Edward Cabrera. San Diego seems like a match as well. However, there has not been anything tangible yet to emerge regarding the players from this post and I'm left feeling like these guys might still be Twins in June.

IMO the only player who makes the most sense right now is Wallner because I agree with you that his trade value is close to his ceiling and that always makes the most sense.

The other mentioned are at a low ebb of their trade value & I wouldn't trade any of them right now. Only possibility is if we can trade Kepler for front-line SP like Marquez (CO) or Montas (NYY) that'll bounce back. I'd never trade Kepler for a couple of poor players & or poor lotto tickets.

June we can trade Kepler & Gallo, hopefully for something.

In regards to values,  I think Kirilloff and Larnach are low due to their injuries.  Kepler is low due to his performance so these are accurate.  Wallner is about right.

As for trades, I like keeping potential with lots of control years remaining.  Therefore, I'd be for trading Kepler first as his value will probably not improve unless they feel he will take a jump with the shift changes.

I would not trade Kirilloff or Larnach and am open to trading Wallner.  Let's let Kirilloff and Larnach regain their value this year, assuming they are healthy, and then revisit them at the deadline.

If the Twins trade Kepler, who plays right? I guess that what spring training is all about.

Teams know the Twins have (currently) too many outfielders. What can they actually get for Kepler, compared to his worth to the team.

Sadly, barring breakout spring trainings, I would just as soon see Larnach, Celestino and Kiriloff start the season in St. Paul to get back up to speed and worry about Kepler (and maybe Gallo) shining enough to be seasonal trade bait.

Of course, we suddenly have a logjam at St. Paul. Wallner is also in the mix and would be nice to play him in the field instead of making him a permanent DH. And is Martin or Lewis an outfielder, or shortstop. Twins, make decisions on players and where you truly want them to play AND succeed. Going forth.

Kepler has the least amount of teams looking to deal for him.  No rebuilding team would give up much for him, as he would not fit their timeline.  That leaves playoff level teams, but they are less likely to deal from their MLB roster, outside of bullpen, or back of rotation guys.  Maybe, if they near MLB ready guy at a position of depth.  So if you are looking for someone to help out this year for Kepler, you will be limited to mid pen guys or back end rotation guys most likely.

For the other 4, all could be traded to either rebuild teams, or competing teams.  If they are for rebuild teams you could get someone ready to help now, but still not likely for ready to help now guys from teams looking to compete.

I get we have a ton of depth, and not enough playing time.  Kepler is most likely out the door, but do not expect much for him in my opinion.

If Larnach has that much value I would be looking for the teams or teams that believe it.  He doesn’t look anything special to me and I’m the same mold as the others, but plays the worst defense of them all.

I believe Kepler is going to thrive with the shift ban.  I’d actually like to see a Kepler Gallo and Buxton OF with Kirilloff and Gordon sprinkled in and Garlick against LHP

It would have looked neat had you put sprinkled after Garlick.  ?

I look at it like this, what good does it do to trade someone with no trade value?  So after looking at the trade values I'd trade Kirillof or Larnach.  I mean if you trade Larnach then you still have Kirillof; if you trade Kirillof then you still have Larnach.  They are worth the most, so then we'd get the most from them??  Kepler is still under contract for this year and next because of an option.  So you can go with Gallo, Buck, and Kepler in the OF with Kirillof/Larnach whoever stays splitting time in the OF, 1B, and DH and Gordon also splitting time between the OF and a little INF, and you have Garlick also sitting on the table.  Walner and Celestino are both strong depth pieces in AAA than can come up in case of injuries.  If they are going to trade someone, might as well trade someone that can actually bring something back??

Gallo is our new RF. Pretty sure Gordon starts 100 games in LF. Another 30 in CF.

Larnach will play some LF & will DH. Kirilof some LF but more at 1B & some DH. Walner may beat out Gallo by August.

Kepler - Pagan - López for a starter would be super!!

No, it's not. Compare their trade values on recent trades. Most of the mock trades are garbage.

nah, i still think it's pretty bad. the site says caleb thielbar and byron buxton have the same amount of trade value.

Agreed, letting Kepler go for little or nothing makes no sense. Can’t realistically think playing Kepler every day instead of Gordon every day in our outfield makes good sense offensively. Signing of Gallo (not thrilled about) means Kepler has to go - no question. I’d prefer to keep Kepler & have never heard of the Gallo signing!! Not real.

Celestino - Walner - Kepler - Sands - Winder - Pagan - López - Jeffers are all pieces we can put together for pitching or a RH bat or both.

I’d like to see Walner develop into a masher in MN - love to see Jeffers hit .245 & improve defensively in MN - Seeing any of these 4 pitchers become effective would be great in MN……….can’t all happen & probably none of it happens with guys in front of them.

Please use multiple trade pieces together so the return really has value!!!

I'm going to play devils advocate here.  Why is no one talking about the possibility that Gallo plays LF and Keper stays in RF?  Kiriloff and Larnach are going to have to prove they're healthy.  Gordon is a utility guy.  Kiriloff will play plenty of 1B if healthy.  I've also heard the FO thinks Gallo can be very good 1B.  I'm not sold that Kepler has one foot out the door.

Gordon starting 130 games in the outfield has the ring of another 78 win season.  Can't wait.

Kepler should be traded, Gallo might be shipped at the deadline if Larnach/Kirilloff/Gordon/Wallner are all healthy and major-league ready, I could see one of that foursome being shipped for pitching at the deadline or next off-season (most likely Larnach) but they should be kept until we see a full healthy season of each of them.

IMO Gordons playing time will be decided by how well he plays. Was last year a "career" year or the beginning of his turning into an above avg. hitter? Only time will tell.

He's and infielder masquerading as a corner outfielder--with limited power.  That's got disaster written all over it if you're expecting a hundred starts as such.

Is it just me, or did we have this conversation just a few years ago?  When we had Kepler, Buxton, and Rosario and Cave as the 4th, with plenty of prospects like Kirilloff, Larnach, Garlick, and Celestino chomping at the bit waiting for a chance.  Wasn't that the reason we felt we could let Rosario walk away for nothing?  We had more than enough prospective replacements?  And how many of those guys have taken the job and ran with it, establishing themselves as an integral part of the OF?  Now we have a new crop of great prospects coming up?  Do we really?  If so, why would we possibly need a Gallo to supplement the roster?  Or is this 2020/2021 all over again with the glut of outfielders and what do we do with them?  Just asking...........?

Our FO seems to build a roster with hope ,,, you can't succeed in building a team with hope that they can find away to make them perform differently  for us then they did with other teams ...

THE FANS ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT SHOULD HAVE THE HOPE ...

GALLO was not the right choice to add to the roster but if the front office  hopes he produces they can maybe trade him at deadline  ...

We got a catcher at a position of need  , we haven't fully filled the other holes the right way ...

We lost a few of our better hitters in trades or free agency so the younger players are going to have to stay healthy and produce ....

That's my story and I'm sticking to it  ....
