  • 3 Takeaways from the Minnesota Twins' First Weekend of Spring Training

    Matthew Taylor

The Minnesota Twins finished their first weekend of spring training. While we need to be careful forming opinions from three spring training games, there were a few things we learned from the first weekend of Twins baseball in Fort Myers.

    1. Early returns on José Berríos are strong

They say that first impressions can work wonders, and boy did Jose Berríos’s first impression work wonders today in his 2020 spring raining debut. In two innings today, Berríos faced the minimum six batters while striking out four. The right-hander was working all four of his pitches today, but what was most impressive was his fastball which struck out two and hit 95 MPH multiple times.

In a quote from Betsy Helfand’s post-game piece, Baldelli said of Berríos, “José looked great. His fastball command was great,” Baldelli said. “He even reached back at the end of some of these at-bats and gave us something extra. But he looked very comfortable. He had a plan, and he executed well. Again, another start you would want to see from one of your guys to start spring training.”

While the key for Berríos has never been his early season performance, seeing him look strong and in command to kick off his 2020 campaign after a rigourous offseason filled with tweaks and changes was certainly refreshing.

    2. Bullpen looking to pick up where it left off in 2019

Only the Tampa Bay Rays posted a higher team fWAR from their bullpen than the Minnesota Twins in 2019. After adding Tyler Clippard this offseason, hopes are high for the Twins bullpen heading in to 2020, confirmed by Rocco Baldelli saying at the 2019 Diamond Awards, “I think we have the best bullpen in baseball”.

While the first few games of spring training don’t mean much (let’s be real, they don’t mean anything), seeing the collection of arms pitch well in their first action of 2020 just reinforces the fact that hopes are high for the bullpen this season. Over the past two games, pitchers from the projected 2020 Twins bullpen (Zack Littell, Cody Stashak, Sergio Romo, Tyler Clippard, Taylor Rogers) put up a combined 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 H and 9 Ks.

Expectations for the Twins bullpen in 2020 are high, and there’s been nothing from the Twins first weekend of spring training to change those expectations.

    3. “Best shape of his life” may not be hyperbole for Miguel Sanó

After seeing all of the tweets about Miguel Sanó being in “the best shape of his life”, Twins fans were intrigued to see what Sanó would actually look like out on the baseball diamond. After seeing him play today they should be nothing but impressed. He looked trim in his new white Nike uniform and made some plays with his feet that I’m not sure Miguel Sanó of days past would have made. In a sequence of events you don’t see often, the Twins’ first run of the game was generated solely by Miguel Sanó’s legs. In the second inning of Sunday’s game, Miguel Sanó ran out a bloop single to first base, moved to second base on an Adrianza single, and then advanced to third and home on consecutive sacrifice flies.

While he didn’t have to make any difficult plays in his debut as a full time first-baseman, Sanó had a clean game and gave Twins fans a preview of what his connection with Josh Donaldson will look like when he cleanly snagged a throw from the Bringer of Rain off of a Brandon Drury grounder in the fourth inning of Sunday’s game.

It was great to see the Twins back in action with the guys who are locks on the 26 man roster showing a great deal of confidence and ability to a man.  I have one issue that I have to bring up about Sano.  In the second (of two) chances taking first on a ground ball, it looked like the foot that was supposed to go on the bag ended up on the foul side of the bag.  I thought to myself that this is a sure fire way to get injured.  Can we hope that either someone from the Twins brass will read this post and talk to Miguel, or that someone saw what I saw and will work with him on this issue PRONTO?

Yes, saw the same thing. I wouldn't be bragging him up at 1B yet. Sure he snagged a clean chest high throw from Bringer of the Rain. Big deal. Let's see him grab some short hops and wide throws before we give him the gold glove. And I didn't think he looked any too svelt. Looks like he is still carring plenty extra.

    It's a relative thing rv78.

For as big as Sano is, he looks very fit (don't forget he's north of 260 lbs).       Plus, he's still learning to be a full time 1B.       He'll make mistakes, it has to be expected some.

He doesn't need to be a platinum glover, he just needs to make the routine plays routinely.   He's athletic enough that the rest should come in time.

Just tossing this out there, but there's a neat article on the Twins website about Sano and Donaldson already creating a bond from day one. And let's not forget, Sano helped champion Donaldson joining the team via a video message he made. Sano has clearly been growing the last year or so from everything we have seen. I'd invite everyone to read the article.

And how about that Zander Wiel?? Too good for AAA, but no room on the Twins. What to do, what to do.

It'd be nice to have Zander continue to grow and excel.  He'd be much like a Jaylin Davis or Lewin Diaz come the trade deadline.  With Rooker, Kirilloff, and Larnach looking for a shot, it's going to be very difficult for Zander to punch through and stick.  He's made it this far, and I'd hate to see him sit in AAA because he has too much in front of him.  Tough with Jaylin Davis, since we gave him away for 11 innings and 9 earned runs, but hey who's counting (not to mention Kai-Wei Teng and his stunning ERA out of the pen in Low-A).  Jaylin was sent in part because he didn't have a chance behind our loaded outfield.  His HR's would've fit well.  Long story longer, there are many similarities with Zander Wiel.  He's already 27 to boot.  Let's get something for him and see if he can make something of himself elsewhere.

Sano looks great. I’ve seen him being worked and drilled at first base and I think he’ll be fine. But ‘ran out a bloop single’ ... were we at the same game? Heh. Yeah, a bloop hit to short left-center that dropped in where no one could get to it, nor make a play ... he wasn’t running hard and didn’t have to ‘run out’ anything. But, he did run well and hard in the following plays to score the first run of the game. He tagged up and ran from 2nd to 3rd on a fly to center. And when the fielder threw to 3rd base, it allowed Adrianza to tag up and get to 2nd. Good running moves.

    Takeaways...

1.) watching spring training is the best!

2.) Watching prospects play is awesome, especially when the announcers aren't sure who they are (but you have a Twins Prospect Handbook so you know who they are).

3.) Nothing on the field can be taken away from 3 games though...

Sell them one. Or better yet, give them one. Best advertisement ever.

I don’t have the stats on hand, but I believe his OPS+ was below average for AAA last year, as offense surged to a ridiculous degree with the new ball. It’s unlikely he’s going to be in the picture at any point.
