Second Base Is Twins Most Intriguing Position in 2023

Recommended Posts

I'd like to see a solid vet at second base who can hit 275 with 30+ homers. Oh wait we have one. Polanco should slot in at the third spot in the lineup and maybe lead the team in rbi's and have an ops over 800. He should get meaningful time off this year before he breaks down which would help him avoid any long down time.

Polonaise is one of the few players we have worth a front line starter  we are losing at least two at the end of this season.  Just a thought.
I prefer pests with speed and high on base percentage so if one of the youngsters pans out, time to move him.

you also forgot Salas who could also rocket through the system.

I can't see any way Polanco is still a Twin this time next year.  He likely won't get that many at bats to vest his option.  His $10M salary isn't worth it when we have so many younger, cheaper guys waiting in the wings.  I would expect that IF he starts off well, and IF the prospects also do well in the minors, we could have a mid season trade of Polanco to someone who needs a 2nd or SS to bring one of the younger guys up and hopefully get a return for Polanco.  If the younger guys are doing well - I would support this kind of move.  Can't keep everyone and need a place for the younger guys to play.

If we’re in 1st or 2nd place in July & Polanco is contributing, he’s not going anywhere in ‘23.

Polanco started the All-star game in ‘21…..hit 33 HR’s ……got MVP votes. These things happen to 2-3 guys across the leagues in the same year. Having prospects pounding AA & Fall League pitching is very encouraging but it doesn’t mean we have plug & play & succeed guys in our Farm System just because that’s what we’d like to think.

Lee - Lewis - Martin were all recognized early as big talents - I do think a couple of them will shine at some point! Not every guy that gets ranked as a high prospect should be on the club by the Trade Deadline or spring of ‘24 though.

Polanco has real MLB home run power, and precious few of the kids are expected to bring that any time soon. I expect him to be starting at 2b the rest of this season and next year when camp opens too.  They can try to seize the job then, but this lineup isn't the 2019 squad and you do want a couple guys that can jog the bases 20-25 times a year. Right now Buxton will hit when he plays, Correa and Miranda are both in that 20 HR area, and then it gets dicey. Polanco has a huge role in this offense and won't be traded away lightly.

What does this mean? That Correa is telling the FO who stays and who goes and who should be signed?

The FO asks Correa for player input on what he wants playing with him. Much like Tom Brady and AAron Rogers in the nfl.
