Tonight the "so hot right now" Minnesota Twins host the Kansas City Royals.

Pop quiz (answer below): Is Kansas City in Missouri or Kansas?

Former supplemental first round pick Kris Bubic gets his 3rd start of the season for KC. The 23 year old lefty features, according to former Twins analyst Bert Blyleven, "all four pitches."

The Twins will counter with former Uber driver Randy Dobnak in his second start of 2021. The 26 year old Dobnak features a mustache.

KC is the team immediately above the Twins in the ALC, so this weekend presents an opportunity to move into thi... um, get closer to third place.

If some kind person, or one of the mods, could please post lineups when available, it'd be greatly appreciated. I'm on my phone, and that's just too much work.

Quiz answer: "Yes." Duh.

Hey, they can't get closer to first place without first getting closer to third place!  So, there's that!

It would also be a plus to get further away from 5th place.

...

4 pitches?! I knew pitch counts were restrictive, but this is a whole new level!

This is incorrect.  Let's say the Royals take 2 of 3 against the Twins, while the White Sox lose 2 of 3 against the O's, and the Indians take 2 of 3 against Toronto.  Then Monday-Wednesday next week, let's say the Twins take all 3 against the O's, the Royals go 2-0 against the Pirates, and the White Sox and Indians split their 4 game series.  Compare the top 4 in the AL Central;

Today

  • CWS --
  • CLE 1.5
  • KC 5.5
  • MIN 9

After Play June 2

  • CWS --
  • CLE 0.5
  • KC 3.5
  • MIN 8

As you can see, the Twins are actually further away from third place, but closer to first place.

First of all, this is a game thread.  Math is prohibited.

Secondly, it is correct in that they can't get to 1st place without passing the 3rd place team.  To do so, they have to get closer to, and then surpass, the 3rd place.  They'd also have to then pass the 2nd place team following the same procedures.

Sure, but you didn't say they can't get to 1st place without passing the 3rd place team.  You said can't get closer to 1st place without getting closer to 3rd place.  That's just not accurate.  Your issue is not with me, but with statistics my friend.

Randy Dobnak features much more than a moustache. He also sports a pair of Nerd Factor 10 corrective glasses, rumored stolen from a data entry technician. She is still angry about that... Okay, maybe she left them in the back of his Uber. Finders keepers.

Otherwise, Dobsie does have an interesting mix of pitches that duck and dive, mostly in the lower half of the zone. If the ump is generous down there, Dobs can have a very good outing. If he is forced higher, things can get kooky pretty quick.

Key for Dobnak: GET STRIKE ONE. You've got good infielders. Use 'em.

On the menu: charred animal, possibly mammalian. Main drink: margaritas. Side dish: jalapeno chips.

But do they also dodge, dip, and dodge?

Hey Game Threaders—I’m looking for volunteers to do introductions for Twins game threads in the month of June. A Google Doc has been posted in the pinned thread entitled “2021 Regular Season Game Threads”.

We’ve had several volunteers but it is never a bad thing to have more people involved. If you’re interested, send me a message and we can work out a date or several dates to do an intro. Here’s your chance to show your brilliance (and writing skills). Thanks in advance!

Not true.  Statistics have nothing to do with my comment, you brought in that context.  The 4 teams could all be one game apart, but the 4th place team is still the fourth place team if they have three teams ahead of them.

You took the comment far more seriously than it was intended.

Ok not statistics then.  How about spatial distancing.  In a liner system containing 4 objects where none of the 4 is tethered to any of the other 4, and are thus free to move backwards or forwards independently, an object can move closer to the "front" one or two objects while still maintaining equal or greater distance to the "third" object.  There is obviously a limit to this, that being if/when the third object moves in front of the second object, but until that moment, the fourth object can continue to reduce the distance between the first and second objects while simultaneously not reducing the distance to third object.

Pop quiz answer: "yes." I'll take the over for Perez. Also my pick to click tonight is Garlick against the lefty.

Like to see these threads become a father-son affair! :)
