Article: Trevor May To Start On Saturday

Recommended Posts

A big congrats to May!  Hopefully he comes up and continues what he is doing at Rochester (with some regression) and sets himself up nicely to be a part of next season's rotation!

Also, a big congrats to Seth for the scoop!

There's more to pitching well than a handful of stats. In the minds of the staff who watches him every day, Meyer most likely hasn't pitched as well as his statistics. But if you have to hang your hat on numbers and are honestly trying to figure out why he hasn't been promoted, perhaps his pitch counts are telling.

Seldom is a competition on purely equal footing. This is a case in point. May and Meyer are both 24-yo RH pitchers acquired for Twins' center fielders. Yet, there are differences that make May's promotion the easy call and delay Meyer, possibly until next year. 1) Meyer has been on a pitch and innings limit. The boundaries aren't exact, but Meyer will likely be shut down while May should be good to go through September. 2) Meyer is not on the 40-man roster and the 40-man is full. While the loss would only be something like Pedro Florimon, the Twins are reluctant to add Meyer this late in the year and perhaps burn an option on him, as well. I'd love to see the 6'9" kid pitch for the Twins this year, but I'm happy that May will be getting his shot, with Milone waiting in the wings.

Glad to see it, but kinda surprised the Twins would announce it this early...in affect tipping their hand and them being able to prep their hitters more than they would should he had been a 'day before' callup type of scenario.

I mean in most cases they would have the guy up the game before regardless, just so he could get "used" to the big lights, settled in, get a good nights sleep etc before his first major league start the following night.

I think you are reading to much into it, I don't think the A's hitters are exactly prepping for a rookie making his first start today (as they face Gibson) and they would have known by tomorrow morning regardless (as May would not have been in Rochester tonight)

Great job Seth, you are definitely wired in and finally, we have one of our big two promoted Twins gave up assets to get these guys and it's about time we get to see Trevor. This guy is big, standing next to these guys in Spring Training, he looks like a NFL tight end, strong arm to boot. Congrats Trevor, hope you're up for a long time.

"He was Philadelphia's 4th Round Draft Pick in 2008... ." What? There is major league talent past the second Round? That's not what we have been hearing for years. Well, Good Luck Trevor! The Twins sure need help.

Like Dozier?

For all the angst and complaining the Twins called up May right on the schedule that made sense considering his injury and rain out. Pretty much exactly as they said.

Sure, if you thought "Early August" made sense before the season started.

If, on the other hand, you thought "why are they wasting him on the futures game," then none of this makes sense.  He should've been called up before "the injury and rain out" were factors.

Great news! Exciting! And deserved. I just don't think you can doubt that he would have pitched the Futures Game and just stayed in Minnesota if it hadn't been for his calf injury.

He needed to pitch a couple games after his DL stink to get back in the groove and get his legs under him. Shorter leash the first time out made sense. I had commented somewhere before that if his next start was an effective 90+ pitches or so, he'd probably make his next start for the Twins. When he wasn't as sharp as hoped for, I figured he'd get a third start before promotion.

Guess the powers that be just wanted to see pitch count, and weren't as concerned with it being a so-so performance. I sure am glad to be wrong.

I'd forget Berrios for 2015 at this point. Not that he isn't a stud. But with other options, he youth and somewhat limited time at AA this year, with more to come soon I hope, he's probably late 2015 at best.

But we are looking at Hughes, Gibson, Nolasco, May, Meyer and Milone as 6, with a possible spot for Pelfrey, even temporary, if fully sound next year. Pino has shown just enough that I'd keep him around for Rochester, a possible pen role, and depth should anyone go down.

Deduno and Johnson...hmmm...thinking Deduno might be brought back for the same reasons listed for Pino. Not sure about Johnson though. Especially with the listed depth, plus Gilmartin and Berrios on the way.

The Future's Game is a red herring. It wouldn't have stopped a promotion if he didn't get hurt.

As for the other point I disagree. There was no need for a call up before Pino and that ended up being a scramble and May couldn't be called up because he just pitched. Pino pitched well so he got a second start and May was hurt. I absolutely believe they were setting him up to start then and the timing bears that out.

I disagree.  It was absolutely going to interfere with a promotion, or they wouldn't have announced it.  The injury came after the announcement, so that's a non factor for that time frame.

As for Pino, if May was the choice, they could have made it work with a spot start from Swarzak, as they later did.  There is always a way to get talent to the big leagues, if that's the goal.  Just like there is always an excuse not to, if that is the goal.

But Pino was the spot start. And pitched well enough to get a second.

Two days after walking 7 hitters in 2 innings, Trevor May throws a No Hitter (in AAA)...has to be some sort of MLB history there.

It was a combined No hitter with Logan Darnell.

Box:

All the more impressive that he did it while still on the MLB roster! :)
