Article: Today's Official Trade Deadline Discussion

Recommended Posts

Do people feel any different about a Suzuki extension now than they did a week ago when it appeared the Twins might be able to get the Cardinals and Orioles in a bidding war? Not that things a looking a bit more grim, why not plug that hole for a couple of years?

Would anyone out there object to a 2 year/$15M deal for him right now if that came down? I wouldn't.

I think that 2/15 would be an overpay for Suzuki.

Also, Suzuki has to agree to it.  It sounds like he wants more than that anyway.

I agree, it probably would be an overpay.  But, the Twins are probably not going to be spending much money elsewhere during that time, so is there any problem with overpaying a bit?

Joel Sherman from MLB saying that Price will be traded by the deadline.  Makes me wonder about the Rays commitment level to this year if they're gonna let him go.  They've been pretty hot since mid-June, though they could use a bat or two to get them even further up the standings.

I think it'd be a good deal for him. Isn't 1 WAR worth about 5 Mil on the FA market? All they'd need is for Suzuki to be worth 3 WAR over 2 years. I'd like to see him backup more and Pinto or whoever start more, but that seems pretty cheap.

Perhaps an overpay but does it matter if the twins spend an extra couple million? Do we think they're going to make a big splash this offseason that 3 million would push over the top?

Pino the catcher would kill the Twins starters if they can't trust that low breaking balls will be blocked or that runners will not be thrown out or that close pitches will not be framed properly.

What will the Twins do for a catcher in 2015 ?

I've got news for you John: there is another trade deadline of August 31st!   :)

Yeah, but this deadline has been very active and fun.

The August trade deadline is usually a little more low key.

Well, there is the possibility that Suzuki wants more money to stay in Minnesota because the team around him is bad.  He doesn't have to take the offer.

If the Twins offer 2/$15, and Suzuki's camp comes back with 3/$24, do you still do it?

The Braves are also out on Andrew Miller.  Maybe they have TR on the phone talking about Duensing right now?

I know, not the same level of pitcher, but Atlanta needs a LHR and are probably looking for a cheaper option.

I would be fine as high as 2/18 as long as it is only two years.  I just think they really want three years at 8 million to do an extension otherwise they are likely inclined to see what the market brings them.  Based on last year he should be able to get 3 years for 21 mil pretty easy I would think.  Coupled with the lack of available catchers he could go 3/24.  I have to believe it's the years that will be sticking point and to extend you typically have to overpay to make a deal.

IMO they should trade him and overpay in FA makes it a win, win that way.

No.  I wouldn't give him a 3rd year unless it was a team option.

Pino can catch too? Love the versatility!

Hasn't this been covered?

Most likely Milone is only in AAA because

a) he was already in AAA for Oakland

b.) the SP whom he will be replacing on the 25 man roster is scheduled to start before Milone is available to pitch (since he pitched 2 days ago).

Darnell pitches on Friday and Pino pitches on Saturday. Presumably Milone isn't available until Sunday.

Pfft Facts, it's much more easy and fun to bash the Twins front office for not knowing how to work a 25 man roster ;)

I would go 3 years if the AAV isn't bad.

3/18 I would be ok with, I'd also be ok with 2/14 or 2/15. 3/24? Pass.

I suppose 3/18 isn't actually bad.  I would probably give him that too.  At that salary, he could be a trade candidate at the end of that deal as well, and the pay is low enough that you could justify him being a backup at that point.

I would say that Milone and May replace Pino and Darnell in the rotation, perhaps not this turn, but by the next time through.
