Article: Today's Official Trade Deadline Discussion

Recommended Posts

The Trade Deadline has passed... let's see if anything surfaces for the Twins.

I was just thinking that there may be a few more trades that get announced after the deadline passed.  Anything involving a Twins player is going to take a backseat to this Price deal.

It appears the dust has settled, and Nick Franklin is the closest thing to a prospect in this deal

DET gets David Price

SEA gets Austin Jackson

TB gets Drew Smyly and Nick Franklin

Not crazy about it from the Mariner's perspective.  Depending on how you view Franklin, seems kind of low-upside for the Rays considering that Price is still controlled through 2015 (although as I mentioned previously, this return keeps them in the 2014 race more than prospects would have, if that is still a consideration).

I thought Seattle was getting Smyly?

Pretty disappointing if the only trade the Twins make is Fuld.

Meh, to be honest, pretty much every player that got moved today with the exception of the Fuld trade involved some really, really good players:

Cabrera, Lackey, Price, Lester, Zobrist, Stephen Drew (ok not that good), etc

Mis-reported originally on mlbtraderumors.  When I refreshed again they switched it to Smyly to Rays.

Trade deadline has passed. We'll see if anything is announced late.

FWIW, this has been really fun and kind of watershed moment for me personally. When we started the forums on Twins Daily back in 2012, I was really hoping we would find a great place for a community to weigh in on events like this and today everyone came through. What a great way to share the day.

That's a significant accomplishment and is the result of a lot of hard work by moderators and members who have had to adjust to a forum that is a bit different than what finds elsewhere. Thank you everyone for making it happen. Today was personally very rewarding.

(Now let's hope the Twins did something rewarding, too.)

There has to be more to it. That would be a really terrible haul for Price.

There was ZERO buzz surrounding the Twins as the deadline approached. Either they played their cards very close to the vest (and something is coming)...or they just didn't play at all. If Suzuki isn't signed to an extension before season's end, this will have been a mighty failure by the front office.

When it was first reported, the other team wasn't listed.  It now looks like he was acquired by the Nationals.

Cabrera and cash to cover his remaining salary for a questionable SS prospect, #12 in the Nats system. Does not appear to be a sellers market, at least for mid-level or worse position players. Not surprising the Twins weren't able to do more, if this is all you can get.

Yankess likely out on Price. What does NYY have if the Twins packaged Willingham and Correia to them? Any lower level prospects that look interesting?

Here's their top 20. I was interested in several of their C+ guys personally. Some of them might be had for Hammer/KC

True. This confirms mostly what I've been saying: nobody wants to add a Kevin Correia type at the July 31 deadline.  (Although I was a bit surprised that someone wanted to add a Sam Fuld at the deadline. :) )

Mediocre position players are easier to trade -- usually they offer some kind of positional flexibility (Drew) if not upside.  Although Willingham and Suzuki have very limited positional flexibility... in any case, KC level mediocre pitchers are more likely to move in August if someone is desperate (for minimal/no return, of course).

No Twins trade would generate enough buzz to get through all the buzz of every other trade that just happened in the past two hours today.

I wouldn't be surprised if something happened and hasn't been announced yet.  I also wouldn't be surprised if the Twins didn't move anyone else besides Fuld.

Again, no.  If they really wanted a bat, maybe we'd fetch one of those guys for Willingham, but KC would be a detriment to that deal.

Can you imagine the (well-deserved) riot among any contending team's fanbase if they added career 83 ERA+ (peak 97, current 79) "I don't want to pitch out of the bullpen" Kevin Correia?  Particularly NY.  Maybe a more fringe contender will take him out of desperation in August, but the Twins will get virtually nothing in return but salary relief, mark my words.

This used to happen (see my Mientkiewicz example from 2004), but I am pretty sure with tweeting and live blogging, anything that gets to the league office by the deadline is getting to the public within minutes too.

Thinking about the Price deal....would people have been interested in the Twins sending a package to the Rays for Price?  They would have had plenty of time to work out an extension.  If that wouldn't be possible he might push us into conention next season or if not he'd be a great chip next deadline too. At the very least you extend the qualifying offer in 2016.  The Smyly & Franklin package (assuming there aren't more pieces involved) isn't that much for a player of Prices' caliber.  Perhaps Berrios, Polanco and one of our A-ball/rookie pitchers?

I'm not sure where I stand on that package myself....
