Article: Today's Official Trade Deadline Discussion

Recommended Posts

This used to happen (see my Mientkiewicz example from 2004), but I am pretty sure with tweeting and live blogging, anything that gets to the league office by the deadline is getting to the public within minutes too.

True, but there was so much going on today that I could see the talking heads ignoring it until after the big name trades were official.  That's all.

You're right though.  I'm leaning towards no other trades were made by the Twins today.

Other than Suzuki (who apparently got extended) all the other players we fans would like to see gone are exactly the type to be traded in August.

Yep. The real action was going to be Suzuki. The rest are marginal-to-worthless and scream "waiver wire deal".

All in all, I'd give Ryan a B+ for this deadline, pending announcement of Suzuki's terms. Great move with Fuld, decent move locking up Suzuki. Not gonna ding him much for failing to move roster fodder.

Two years with a vesting option according to Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports

I have zero problem with this. The Twins have plenty of money and this extension will not prevent them from doing anything in the offseason. Hopefully Suzuki will be a back-up for much of that time, while also being a mentor to Pinto and an insurance policy.

The Twins are aware the July 31st deadline was for trades, not extensions, right?   :)

Jokes aside, it does seem like a weird time to extend a player.  Have there been other contract extensions announced on July 31st in past seasons?  I don't recall any....

Usually they seem to have the extension wrapped up around mid-July. It sounds like these negotiations just drug on longer.

I can't believe all the Rays got for David Price was Smyly and Franklin... I like the trade from the Mariner's point of view, Franklin for Austin Jackson is a nice upgrade that helps them immediately. Of course, Detroit gets much better in the short term too. But the Rays...wow.

I'm not convinced Pinto is going to be our catcher of the future. I like this extension. Just curious on the $$$.

I'm guessing they had a trade lined up and basically said they wouldn't do it if they could reach a deal.

The timing of the annoucement would support that theory. It'll be interesting to see what we can find out when all the dust settles. (Who was in, what an offer was -etc.)

Thinking about the Price deal....would people have been interested in the Twins sending a package to the Rays for Price?  They would have had plenty of time to work out an extension.  If that wouldn't be possible he might push us into conention next season or if not he'd be a great chip next deadline too. At the very least you extend the qualifying offer in 2016.  The Smyly & Franklin package (assuming there aren't more pieces involved) isn't that much for a player of Prices' caliber.  Perhaps Berrios, Polanco and one of our A-ball/rookie pitchers?

I'm not sure where I stand on that package myself....

I'm confused by the deal. I don't know much about Franklin, except that he's a solid MI.  Smyly has a 3.92 ERA in 35 G as a starter.  Milone has a 3.85 ERA in 72 G.  We got Milone for Fuld. TB got Smyly (and Franklin) for one of the top SP of this era?  There's more to this, but I wouldn't be happy as a Rays fan.

Yeah, I think the Yankees are still a prime potential spot for Willingham, I am guessing they were going after better players and couldn't bring em in.

It appears the dust has settled, and Nick Franklin is the closest thing to a prospect in this deal

DET gets David Price

SEA gets Austin Jackson

TB gets Drew Smyly and Nick Franklin

Not crazy about it from the Mariner's perspective.  Depending on how you view Franklin, seems kind of low-upside for the Rays considering that Price is still controlled through 2015 (although as I mentioned previously, this return keeps them in the 2014 race more than prospects would have, if that is still a consideration).

Rays also get Willy Adames from Tigers... highly regarded SS.  Third rated prospect in system.

As a fan of the Mariners (2nd fav team) I am not sure I like this deal for the M's or the Rays. Franklin has a ton of potential, and while I like Jackson he isn't some stud IMO.

The Rays get back a pretty solid potential SS and a guy who is a meh back of the rotation pitcher. Seems really odd, especially with the Rays on a 20-4 run.

Man...if the Tigers got Price for Austin Jackson and Drew Smyly...they robbed the Rays, even if they only have him this year and next year's $15-18M arbritation rated season.

Plus, even if Price walks, they will get someone's 1st round pick as Qualifying Offer compensation.

Part of me wonders if Boston is in total tank mode so that they get into the bottom 10 records and get to keep their 1st rounder when they sign, let's say..... Scherzer.

They'd give up their 2nd round pick, but they got Oakland's sandwich pick in the Lester deal.

I don't know, I kinda like it.  The Rays have a pretty good team, no reason they can't contend in 2015 (or even continue their comeback run in 2014).  This trade helps that a lot more than some package of prospects.

Well one thing we know about the Twins is that they are good at trading center fielders and getting value.  I thought the Fuld trade was amaziing and I was glad they got a high ceiling very low floor (injured) RP for Moralas who I didn't think we would be able to trade.

If they sign Suzuki that is one less piece to worry about in FA.  I think the Hammer will be gone in August.  Coriea I doubt they can get rid of but can't hold that against the FO.  I would say they did quite well.  Let's hope the Kids do well when they get called up.

2 years, $6M per.  Not bad.

Way less than I thought and I am happy.  One less hole to fill next off-season. Likely not going to spend any money on the rotation, catcher, CF, 3B, 2B, or 1B.  So a nice upgrade in the OF/DH or two.

I actually think resigning Suzuki is partially intended to help Pinto's catching career.

With free agency ahead for Suzuki the Twins HAD to send Pinto to the minors because he HAD to learn to catch adequately by next year.  But from all reports him being ready to work with a bunch of young, promosing pitchers by next year wasn't going to happen.

Now that Suzuki is around, Pinto can be called back up and we can go back to the way it was at the beginning of the season-with Pinto as a part time DH/part time catcher who can learn from Steinbach and Suzuki on the job in the majors.

Pinto gets to learn to walk the tightrope with Suzuki as his safety net.
