The Twins Final 25

Twins Video

My first Minnesota Twins 25 man roster projection came out way back in January, the second version was then looked at in the middle of March. Now with Spring Training virtually over, it's time to get serious about who's coming north. It seems pretty clear who Minnesota will bring, but before the final announcement is made, I need to take one last shot.

The Twins still have just over 40 guys left in camp, and 10 of them are non-roster guys. A few of them have already been told they'll be reassigned to Rochester, so that helps with clarity a bit further. Given what we know, here's how I see the final 25 shaking out.

Rotation (5)

  • Ervin Santana
  • Hector Santiago
  • Kyle Gibson
  • Phil Hughes
  • Tyler Duffey

Paul Molitor recently told Mike Berardino that Santiago would start game 2 behind Santana, with Gibson to follow. That means Hughes gets the fourth game of the year and the fifth starter makes their debut against the White Sox. While the 5th starter could have been Trevor May or Adalberto Mejia, it's Tyler Duffey who has had a spring worthy of holding onto the job. I still think long term he profiles best in the pen, but to start 2017, this is where he begins.

Starting Lineup (9)

  • Jason Castro C
  • Joe Mauer 1B
  • Brian Dozier 2B
  • Jorge Polanco SS
  • Miguel Sano 3B
  • Eddie Rosario LF
  • Byron Buxton CF
  • Max Kepler RF
  • ByungHo Park DH

No changes here from roster projection 2.0. Kennys Vargas was given the opportunity to win the DH spot and simply fell short. He went to the WBC, didn't play, and then got hurt when he returned. I remain skeptical Vargas is a productive big leaguer, and while the injury gives Minnesota something to pin it on, the reality is that Park is simply the better DH option.

If there's something of intrigue here, it's that Eddie Rosario put together a really nice WBC and spring in general. He's expanding the zone just a bit less, and looks locked in defensively. If he can bring back some of the magic from his rookie season, the Twins stand to benefit big time.

Bench (4)

  • Eduardo Escobar
  • Robbie Grossman
  • Chris Gimenez
  • Danny Santana

Much remains the same here from the roster projection earlier this month. Drew Stubbs failed to capitalize on his opportunity to take Grossman's spot and has been released. The biggest difference is the inclusion of Danny Santana.

The final bench spot should've (and likely would've) been Ehire Adrianza's. A strained oblique late in spring training is going to have him open the season on the DL, and that likely saves Santana from the DFA that was looming. I don't see him as a productive big leaguer, he plays poor defense everywhere and struggles with the bat, but he's going to get a couple weeks to prove it.

Bullpen (7)

  • Brandon Kitnzler Closer
  • Ryan Pressly Setup
  • Matt Belisle
  • Justin Haley
  • Craig Breslow
  • Taylor Rogers
  • Alex Wimmers

The bullpen has seen a little bit of a shakeup since earlier this month. Chargois was optioned to Triple-A, and while it would've been nice to see him make the big league club, the reality was that a shaky spring did him in. I expect him to grab saves for Minnesota at some point in 2017, but he'll start the year on the farm.

Taking the place of Chargois comes down to a two man race between Michael Tonkin and Alex Wimmers. The former is out of options and likely wouldn't pass through waivers, but his spring hasn't been indicative of a guy the Twins can rely on. Coming back on a minor league deal, Wimmers has been solid enough in the limited spring action, and could offer some value in middle relief. His velocity has seen a spike since moving to the pen, he has been a better pitcher. It remains a tossup as to what the Twins do there, but Tonkin may have used his last chance.

Biggest challenge I see here is having to add Park, Gimenez and Wimmers all to the 40-man roster. How do you see that playing out? Perkins to the 60-day DL, either O'Rourke or Boshers DFA'd and Tonkin DFA'd?

Perkins to the 60 day is all but guaranteed.

Boshers is off I'd guess after losing out, and O'Rourke is slated for the 10 day DL I believe.

If they go Wimmers (which I would), then I think Tonkin is the final domino.

Yeah, the DL will probably have Vargas, Adrianza and O'Rourke on it to start the season, and the Twins would be wise to let Perkins ease back in and put him on the 50-day...because they can.

Sure, they need a couple of roster spots. Boshers is a name that will be sent onto Rochester or elsewhere (all those non-roster guys will be taking up some space, unless the AA/AAA disabled list gatehrs some names). Interesting to have to choose between Tonkin and WImmers. The Twins have a bit invested in Wimmers, so it would be nice to see if he can be a presence for the next couple of seasons.

Of course, all players ARE on a short leash, especially Danny Santana and Escobar. Surprised Drew Stubbs didn't take the offer. He didn't show alot in spring training that will get him a major league roster spot, and I would think he might've been on the ball enough to know that if ANY of the Twins outfielders start off badly, they could be demoted for regular playing time at AAA, as well as the possible injury angle, and he would've been in a decent position for first call-up.

I'm trying to figure out what the Red WIngs rotation will be. Is Duffey better suuted for the rotation, or the bullpen. But, I imagine, he will be on a leash, too, as the twins watch the progress of Mejia and Berrios for immediate needs. I'm curious to see what Jason Wheeler does at AAA. And what position Yohan Pino is used in the minors. Too many names down on the farm.

Kudos to Park for finding his swing and getting into the groove. Plus, the guy is actually autographing items for fans after last season where he had the most "certified" autographs on cards available of any player in the Big Leagues. But his signature has shortened significantly.

I'm hoping Stu Turner comes abck, as the catching depth is really light in the minors...no extra bodies if someone goes on the DL at the moment.

Can the starters come out of the gate strong? What will the bullpen really contribute? Talk about a bench...really...ask yourself WHY would you play any of these guys on a regular basis compared to promoting someone from the minors to take a position if there is an injury. And what will the line-up be...and can that line-up be set this week.

No need to have those extra bodies in camp. Give a good week to your regulars...you have to win games in April, Twins, if you want fannies in the seats this summer!

I'm thinking at this point Wimmers makes it just because. And that's not a knock. Chargois simply didn't capitalize on his ending performance last season and the open window this spring. Unfortunately for himself, as well as the team. And because of this, you may be right about Haley, but I'm just not sold on him. I wish I was, and was hoping I would be.

I still think the team might be better with Duffey in the pen and Mejia in the rotation. But I'm not ready to give up on Duffey as a SP yet, and in the long run, his taking the final rotation spot is the right call. He can still move to the pen, but I think he's shown again the spring what he may be capable of.

I absolutely don't believe this rotation or bullpen is what we will see a couple of months from now.

I'd HOPE this isn't the rotation or pen we see even a month from now.

I think the Twins are better off with both Duffey and Mejia, but if Tyler starts, there isn't room for both.

I really hope Adrianza feels better later this week, an the Twins say Bye-Bye to Danny Santana, rather than have him on the opening dat roster.

And I hope you're wrong and its' Mejia instead of Duffey getting the call to the rotation. Don't get me wrong - I really like Duffey, but I'm not sure he's ready to start.

If Mejia starts and Duffey is in the pen, they wouldn't have to call up Wimmers yet.

You really think it would be wise to let Boshers go because of a couple beat downs in spring training?  He was arguably the best overall reliever the Twins had in 2016. Rogers got lefties out, but got torched vs righties.  Boshers did well against both.  Obviously, he needs to prove it wasn't a fluke, but IMO he deserves that chance and more importantly the Twins owe it to themselves to find out.  If the Twins remove Boshere from the 40 man, he gets claimed in a heartbeat.  Why not remove the flotsam and jetsom that is JR Murphy?  The presence of Castro precludes him from starting.  He's obviously not as good as Gimenez.  Is he even as good as MItch Garver right now?  If the answer is "no", as I believe it to be, why keep him?  He's far less likely to be claimed and even if he is, is it really a significant loss?

While you present a good argument, I don't think Boshers and a potential move has anything to do with his spring. The reality is that there's other relievers with higher ceilings close behind him.

However, I'm in agreement that I'd DFA Murphy or even Ryan O'Rourke first.

Personally, I'd rather it be Grossman that gets sent packing.  He plays one position, left field.  And he plays it poorly.  He's going to get most of his at bats vs LHP.  At the expense of whom? Rosario or Kepler? They aren't going to improve against LHP if they don't face them.  And Rosario's numbers against LHP aren't that bad.  Not bad enough to be an automatic sit for sure.  At the expense of Mauer?  Okay, fine.  But that doesn't make him a reserve OFer does it?  Maybe Santana doesn't do any one thing exceptionally well. But he has considerable position flexibility.  He has speed, something lacking on this roster.  He also hits lefties and righties about the same.  Santana does a lot of things good enough to get by.  Grossman does 1.  With just 4 bench players, you really can't have that kind of specialization.  You need a guy that can do several things.

You know, a nice follow up to this would be to project a roster on say, June 1st.  Who might get hurt?  Who might get demoted? Who might get promoted?  Could someone be flat out released?  That would surely spark conversation.

This is a neat idea, I like it!
