Fox Sports North Girls

Twins Video

The subject of the FSNorth Girls came up in a post by PeanutsFromHeaven the other day from a post about hirting his mom to be the next Twins manager.

http://twinsdaily.com/blog/68/entry-6101-an-unconventional-choice-for-the-next-twins-manager/

"•Hiring her would give young female fans something to aspire and relate to OTHER than being a Fox Sports North Girl. [Nothing wrong with the girls, but rather than having the broadcast focus on appearances and introductions, focusing on a woman's strategy, intelligence and involvement with the on-field action]"

FSNG0

I responded in a comment

"And I agree, in this day and age, should we really have women filling the roll of "girls" who have at least some expectation of being eye candy rather than reporters/broadcasters/journalists? Should we not also have FSNBoys? Would any man feel comfortable filling that description? I think it's great that Fox Sports are finding ways to get women into their broadcasts, but there has to be a less sexist way to do so than by objectifying them."

So I put the topic out to you, Twins Territory, what are we to make of the FSNorth Girls in today's world? Are they taboo and holding women back, exploiting them for their looks, or are they a viable option to get young sports minded women a foot into a male dominated world?

Maybe somewhere in between.

The easiest way to solve this is FSN needs to test applicants for the prestigious FSN Girls position with a series of baseball related questions. To wit:

* define the infield fly rule, in 240 words or less.

* which side of second base does the second baseman stand? (Shifts excluded)

* how tall can a shortstop be?

* what would you consider the best chance of getting from second to third base?

Upon completion of this test, and submission of 2 glossy 3x5 photos, FSN could make their decisions based on the applicants knowledge of the intricacies of the game, rather than on their bright shiny smiles!

I think Marney Gellnar is what the FSN Girls 'should' be. Marney knows her stuff, seems to legitimately enjoy her job and the games she attends. Im usually not a huge fan of "sideline reporters", but there is absolutely no need for the FSN girls.

The only reason I can think of for the Fox Sports Girls existence is the lowest common denominator.  They're there to uh... *spark* the male viewership.

My suggestions to Fox Sports - don't expose them to bright lights, don't spill water on them, and for the love of God, don't feed them after midnight.

I agree with Boom Boom. Surely it's no coincidence that this team has been awful the last several years and the baseball equivalent of cheerleaders seemed like a legit way to hold onto viewership. The execution has been something else entirely. With the fatherly approach of Bremer and Co. the TV promo's are extremely awkward. Honestly, how do you not cringe during those if you're in the Twins media relations department?

There is no doubt in my mind it is turning off more people than it... turns on (let's just say "keeps interested).

I'm fine with the Erin Andrews of the world, I think their involvement is great. But the FSN Girls are another thing entirely... and this is the 18-34 male demographic speaking.

If these young ladies are supposed to be role models for young girls, then the Twins have badly missed the mark. If they are supposed to attract men to club events at bars/etc. that's a different thing. Either way, they are not succeeding and news flash... you can't take both approaches simutaneously.

Overall, I think the team's marketing department does a good job, but this thing is a #fail.

The fox sports girls are a fox creation, all over the nation fox sports local stations have their own fox sports girls. So it's not the Twins. But they are seemingly complicit.

The title Fox Sports Women would go a long way in my view to changing the tone and responsibility for those young women at Fox.
