It Don't Sano in July

Twins Video

You're the manager, you've run about 20 reports off your computer, had three statisticians, a data geek and a borrowed nun from St. Francis explain esoteric stuff that went right over your head and had you daydreaming like Goldie Hawn and you've now retreated to your manager's office and are debating about throwing darts at the player's roster, wondering who you're going to start at 1st Base. But Fast Frankie, the team's towel guy, has stuck a purple post-it note on your desk that you can't avoid:

Arraez   .346   .420   .499   .869

Miranda  .260   .299   .463   .762

Kirilloff   .269   .319   .407   .726

Sano   .093   . 231   .148   .379

And you wonder why Fast Frankie wants you to know the players' locker combinations.

Who would you start at 1st?

Sano is at AAA ,,, spend the remainder of the month there ,

Get him hitting and fielding better and trade him to a team that needs a dh before Aug 2nd for a bucket of balls or even a dollar would do it  , that is his value ....

We are clicking on offense that we don't need him mudding up the offense with strikeouts and no production ....

If he goes somewhere else for a change of scenery and attitude adjustment and produces  , well good for him  ,,,

we just don't need another major leaguer named rob deer ,,,

Sanó’s rehab is over on 7/24 at the latest. At that point, he’s either activated or designated for assignment unless he voluntarily would accept an option (very unlikely).

Last year, the Astros sent Alex Bregman on a second rehab assignment when the team concluded he wasn't ready at the end of his initial 20-day rehab window.  He had to sit out five days and then began the second assignment.

That's another possibility for Sano, depending on how he progresses.

I’m sure it would have to be medically verified.

I'm guessing the player would need to be on board with it as well. If not, I'm guessing the union picks up on it.

IMO a trade for Sano is never going to happen. Even for a bucket of practice balls. I dont think anyone would want to pick up his salary for the virtually zero production he gives. The Twins need to simply fess up and admit they screwed up paying him all that money and move on.  I doubt anyone would even pick him up if he is DFA'ed and pay him ML minimum. Not worth it.

He is owed a hunk of change and we know the front office hates to give anyone away. But remember, if a player is on the waiver wire in August, he goes. No pulling back. No trade worked out.

So the Twins will run him out as long as they can afford to do so, at the expense of Celestino, Garlick or Miranda.

And, whew, what happens if he produces, slams like 20 homers in the last two months at DH and hits .250 or above. Do the Twins (ahem) grab his...option for 2023 and go forward from there?

Let me preference this with, I don't think Sano will be in our long term plan's and I'm fine with that.

But Sano is very good when he's hot. Sano has been hot in his rehab assignments and I still believe there is some trade value if he stays hot until the trade deadline.

So, I would bring Sano up and alternate him between DH and first bade. while sending Garlic releasing Garlic. They are both right handed and Krakoff can take over Garlic's spot in the outfield.

The last move would be to trade Sano at the trade deadline for a relief pitcher or two, bring Larnach back up when healthy and return Krilloff to his  his current role.

Garlick is not helping the Twins.

The Twins need pitching.  A month ago, I might have said BULLPEN pitching.  Now, I'll just say pitching.

We saw Sanó play in St. Paul earlier last week.  Sanó is not, by a long shot, the Twins' biggest problem.  He smashed 2 HR in the game we saw, and hit 2 more balls on the ground in the game we saw.  No K's.

Maybe the FO needs to get their eyes off the computer and watch the players on the field.  JUST MAYBE.

This team's been shut out more than any club in the bigs.  You don't move on from a guy who could be a difference maker.

Conversely, during the shutouts I don't think the problem has been too few guys swinging for the fences.  We have a Feast Or Famine offense and Sano is in that mold.

You're right.  The problem is too many guys NOT hitting the fences.  Sano can do that.  Also might want to keep in mind that any trade for a SIGINIFICANT pitcher may well include one of Kiriloff, Larnach or Miranda.  Gotta give something to get something.  Opens a hole in the batting order.

Like it or not, this is reality. He has no trade value. He will be in the lineup to the bitter end. It's basically a contract year for him, in the next two months we all get to see how dedicated he is to extending his big league career, or not.

If you want to trade Sano, he has to play in the majors. And as much as it pains me to say it, there is no obstacle to calling him up, because the offense is flagging.

If there are no injuries in the meantime, it would be pretty easy to option out Celestino (whose batting average has shed about 70 points from its height, and who hits for zero power, pitiful RBI, and as we saw last week, can't even lay down a bunt). Gilberto should probably be playing every day in St Paul. With Jeffers out and Sanchez catching most games you have DH spots available, and can shift others around to various spots since they play various spots.

I'd rather not see him, but it is also foolish to assume there is no trade value, especially if he comes up and whomps a few. No, you won't get Montas or Castillo, but some contending team with more stable pitching could throw a mid-grade reliever out there for a chance at a power boost. Don't forget the Twins got Ryan and Strotman for a power bat rental last year, and the Braves won the Series behind a batch of reclamation/cheap-pickups like Rosario and Soler.

But the value is and will remain near zero as long as Sano is in the minors, so putting off a call up just increases the chances we are stuck with him for the rest of the year.

Trade him with Kepler and Jeffers to get some pitching. We are loaded with outfielders. Arraez must play.

So what if he becomes a stud with another team. He certainly has been given chances to be a star with us and he is/has not done so.

If he does leave the Twins, wish him well!

Twins Geezer.... out!
