Is there a Catching issue?

I have never been a HUGE Jeffers fan, but at the same time I have never been anti-jeffers. but as this season goes on, I have to wonder what the best decision is to fix our catching. Or does it need fixing?

The Twins are exactly middle of the road when it comes to team ERA, and for the Twins that is a huge win!!  We do not have aces to rely on, or stud bullpens, so being 15 out of 30 is quite acceptable. A certain amount of that has to go to the catching. so in that aspect you have to give Jeffers some credit.

But how long can we go with a primary catcher who hits  .176 with a .570 OPS?  on top of that he is only throwing out 13% of base stealers. The book is out, and any team that has any semblance of speed is now running at will against us/him. So now a walk turns into a double or triple.

Jeffers cannot remain the primary catcher on a contending team.

Is he just havign a bad year?

well considering career numbers are .201 and OPS of .656 say it is not UNUSUALLY bad for him.  He did throw out about 27% of base stealers last year, but that isnt super great either.

SO how do you fix the C spot?

1) an absolute pipe dream, becasue no way they will trade in the division, and KC loves him, but I woudl give up a LOT to get MJ Melendez from KC!!

2) How about we get into the Wilson Contreras trade game?

I am otherwise not a brilliant cacthing mind, so help me out here...

What do the Twins need to do at Catcher?

SInce I dont know hwo to EDIT a post, I will add it here.   Demote Jeffers to AAA. call up Kirilloff.  WIth Sanchez as the Primary C, that leaves DH open to have rotation of Kirilloff, Miranda, Urshela (and Sanchez when not catching, to rotate between DH/1B/3B.

I never thought I would say who cares about Sanchez catching struggles. LOL he is at least hitting, and he has not been HORRIBLE.

And then Godoy, or any other caccher with a pulse can be Sanchez's backup

If you bring up Kirilloff and Godoy, who else do you send down besides Jeffers?

I'm always willing to overlook a slow start if it gets corrected, but Jeffers has combined that with another downward trend, and this looks serious enough to merit the demotion.

Have I mentioned that I was very skeptical about the trades of Garver and Rortvedt for exactly this reason?  With hindsight we can see that Rortvedt is injured and Garver is DH'ing more than he's catching, but without the trades perhaps things play out differently, and we could send down to AAA either of the young catchers who needed it the most.  I didn't think we had an oversupply of catching at the time - a veteran and two youngsters with plenty of minor league options seemed about optimal to me.  Oh well, water under the bridge - and acquiring good catching now is tough.

Do we have a catching problem?  Yes.

How do we fix it?  Not a clue, that’s what the guys making the big bucks in the FO are paid to do.  Will it get fixed?  Probably not till the offseason, if then.

And let’s remember that prior to this weekend Jeffers hadn’t thrown anybody out and the first one was safe till he overslid second base.

I think the catching issue is league wide. Take out Wilson Contreras, the league's best catcher, and the difference between a "good" catcher and a poor or average catcher (whatever you want to call Sanchez and Jeffers) is about 1 WAR. You can usually spend less in assets to improve the team in other areas.

I'd just hold on tight and hope Alex Isola is the real deal.

I thought they created a problem the moment they moved Garver but I've been so positivley impressed and surprised by Sanchez. I've been so impressed that the FO was able to unburden the team of Donaldson while getting similar catcher production with that swap, that I've totally ignored Jeffers.

He's been a disappointment, but now that he's the backup catcher... Eh. How much does a backup catcher matter? There should be a replacement-caliber player available by trade or on the waiver wire at some point this season. If not, Jose Godoy is holding a golden ticket.

Somehow my post didn’t get posted (TD sometimes censors posts about people who wear masks, so maybe that’s it). So I will try again

Sanchez should play much more than Jeffers.   Then with our high draft pick, try to draft Kevin Parada or Daniel Susac, both are college catchers predicted by sone pundits to go in the first round.

I'm not a big fan of Jeffers but Sanchez isn't the solution either (I'd prefer Jeffers).  Trading catchers at mid season might not be a good idea but I salvate when I think of Daulton Varsho. He's an athletic ARI LH hitting catcher who can play CF as well. He's got a good arm, good hitter and he's ranked high defensively but IDK the specifics.

He has 4.7 yrs. availability so he'll be expensive. ARI still wants to compete so maybe we can trade catchers with other players like Kepler. ARI might not be willing to trade him either.

IDK if Hou is willing to trade Castro but I'd like to find a Castro type catcher.

No team can expect good things if Sanchez is your number one catcher.  I'm a Twins fan in Brooklyn and I've seen Sanchez behind the plate a lot--it is a no win proposition.

Teams have stolen bases with impunity against the Twins for the past couple years, it's not a new problem with Jeffers this season.  The catcher position is like shortstop--defense is the priority, not hitting.  We'd love Jeffers to reach and exceed the Mendoza line but the observation regarding the team ERA is telling.  Stick with Jeffers for the moment, use Sanchez primarily as a DH.

Sanchez has been much better than advertised behind the plate this year so his actual performance makes me care a lot less about his performance reputation.

The concept of defense first or offense first for positions has been (and should be) left in the past. It's about total production at whatever position a person plays. If the defense is passable, the offensive upside more than makes up for it. I'll take Gary Sanchez 7 out of 7 days vs. Drew Butera.

Jeffers topics have been pretty common lately. He's been a bit unlucky, but it's becoming pretty clear Jeffers is not going to be an average or better asset at the plate, and Jeffers is defensively mediocre at catcher. I'll still suspect he gets a lot of the starts until at least the All Star break. If he hasn't improved by then, he'll get slapped with the permanent backup catcher title and the Twins will focus on identifying a starter for the future.

Yea, you have to score a LOT because your defense sucks, brilliant!
