What to make of the Donaldson trade???

Twins Video

This one may take a while to understand, and may need another move as well.  I can understand moving Donaldson, heck I have even thrown out my own trade scenarios regarding him, but I would have thought we would have returned some pitching for him, not just clearing salary commitments. There MUST be a second (or third if you think the Kiner-Falefa trade was setting this up) shoe to drop here.

Trading Donaldson...

This could be a hard sell while also trying to claim we are going to contend, but really you cannot fault the FO for wanting to get out from his remaining years. But still you would think we would have targeted pitching for him.

Trading Rortveldt...

This really is a low impact move, a bit of a throw in in my eyes. but one that is a touch confusing becasue we got back another RH catcher, losing the R/L platoon options. Plus SAnchez isnt much behind the plate.

Tradign Kiner-Falefa...

This is very confusing, as he was actually a perfect fit for what we needed.  This is where the main TBD comes into play. How do we fill SS now?

We get...

Gio Urshela, This isnt a BAD get as he can play a decent 3B and has a good bat. He can also play some SS as well so there is a bit of flexibility there.

Gary Sanchez... Here is the MASSIVE quesion mark.  Some reports indicate he is not part of the Twins future, some say he is.  If he stays with teh Twins The Twins are looking set up to be a feast or famine offense...  Sanchez and Sano are two High power, MEGA high K RH hitters. and Sanchez is a potential liability behind the plate.

There HAS to be follow up move/trade or two here right??

If teh follow up is a Trevor Story signing, I will be INCREDIBLY pissed off.

If the follow up is another mega deal taking on the contracts of Wil Myers and Eric Hosmer and having Prospect CJ Abrams also come our way for something like Gary Sanchez and Max Kepler then I am all for it!!!!

Anyways... thoughts on the trade? or what comes next??

Canyou think of a rationale I cant for this?

No idea what is next. Something must be happening tomorrow.

Urshela, however, is a good bench player although at a higher salary for a typical utility infielder. He is NOT a shortstop. You were kind in your description of Sanchez. Actually he is about as poor with a glove as a catcher can be. He can throw and when he hits the ball it is scary, but he is more erratic than Sano has ever been.

What SS and 3B? Do we have our starters yet? I'm hoping for Miranda (backed up by Urshela and Arraez) and Story, but they still need a couple more Gray's and half a bullpen for this to make sense.

They need a lot of things for this to make sense. The team got a LOT worse, offensively and defensively, with these trades.

Only thing that makes any sense is they are freeing up money to sign Story, a FA SP,  with Urshela and Miranda for 3b.  Also we still have trade chips for SP, whether it's Arraez, Kepler, or some of our top prospects.  If I am right about this, I send kudos to the FO for this very unusual and forward thinking.  I'm loving it if it gets done.  But,  cannot afford to get outplayed by not finishing this thing off.

It ws a salary dump of Donaldson to someone willing to take the full contract. Gio can be a stopgap at third and also a mid-season tradechip if the Twins go bad. Expect Miranda to start at AAA, unless he pounds the ball this spring and wins the leftfield job over guys like Garlick and Cave (or Rooker).

I don't understand Sanchez. He is a clone, basically, or Sano. Bat him back-to-back with Miguel and we can have a real rally killer. Yes, he could float into the DH spot, and maybe produce. I liked Rortvedt. Was always curious to see what a "muscle" guy might be able toa ccomplish in baseball. Man, his arms! And he would've been a great tandem with Jeffers. Right now, who is our catcher is someone goes down? I picture Sanchez being the third catcher/DH.

Maybe the Twins can flip Sano? Would you be willing to take the salary of Myers or Hosmer for Sano? Can the Padres throw in a pitcher or two?

I hope the dang yearbook hasn't gone to the printer yet!

This is a good trade $$& cents wise. Now sign Story at ss for $150m x 5 years. 30% of Story’s contract is already paid for by Donaldson leaving. The trade with the Reds was great and the Rangers trade will be great with signing of Story. Then a trade with the “a” or d-backs or Padres would make for great off-season.

I'm thrilled another team was willing to take Donaldson, pay ALL his salary, and still give something in return. Granted, we gave up Rordvedt, but Urshela has 2 years of cheap team control remaining, and play a good 2nd or 3rd. Sanchez is kinda intriguing but mostly the Yankees wanted to get rid of him and I ultimately think a team other than the Twins takes on the Sanchez reclamation project.

I'm trying to reserve my opinion of the trades until the roster is complete.  It's clear that the FO is planning part of a bigger picture with each of these transactions.

Speculating on a trades future impact or reflecting on trades with hindsight is often a fuzzy area anyway.  Players entering different environments can have a pretty big impact on their results.  Losing Donaldson and Garver might end up looking worse from a statistical standpoint than they actually are.  Donaldson is going to one of the best offenses in baseball and will probably bat somewhere near Stanton and Judge. He should see a boost in that lineup.  Garver was always locked in a pretty even timeshare at catcher here.  He might find himself getting 450-500 plate appearances compared to his best of 359 here if he stays healthy.

We wouldn't actually start the season with Garlick, Rooker or Cave in LF, would we? Please, Dear God no. Cave and Rooker belong in AAA, and Garlick is at most a RH part of an outfield platoon and only then if there is a decision to play a younger, breaking in LH hitter in LF that we want to take some pressure off of. I pity the team that has any of those 3 guys on the opening day roster with an intent to play them any significant amount of time.

Kirilloff is in leftfield. Sano is the 1st baseman. If you want to pair Miranda with those 2 in kind of an overall platoon where he is to play a couple days a week to break in, okay, but not the other 3 chumps. The DH spot is a rotation that includes off days for people plus Gary Sanchez. Any of those 3 getting any significant playing time would be enough for me to lose a little hair I have left.

The only positive reason is that Donaldson wanted out and FO obliged. Because letting him go just to save $ is bad or to free up $ while losing Donaldson, Garver and Rortvedt to pursue Story is also bad. There were much better options to fill SS w/o putting us in limbo.
