Miguel Sano accused of assault by photographer

I waited for someone else to post this, but nobody did. Yes it is early in this story, but it is something we need to be thinking and ultimately, talking about. Not sure there is anything more to add at this point, and I'd ask that people in the comments be very thoughtful and careful about their responses to this. She also noted in a subsequent tweet that the Twins knew nothing about this incident, and so it has nothing to do with recent trade rumors.

While we obviously need to hear his side of the story, I personally believe her, and am incredibly disappointed in Sano. I'm not sure where to go from here, but at this point I'm not sure how I can root for a team with him on it.

Here is the TwinkieTown story now:

It's an allegation that has to be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. If true, it's massively disappointing, and it needs to be dealt with very seriously by the team.

I'm withholding final judgment until all of the facts are out and the truth is known. But this is also a reminder of why the people involved in this sport that we love are so much more important than the numbers that represent them, including Ws and Ls.

I had actually just saw this on Twitter and was going to post it when I got back to my desk. Obviously only one side of the story has come out so far but it definitely doesn't look good for Sano. The Twins must take this very seriously and if there is any evidence then he needs to be suspended for a number of games. Like you mentioned it will be more difficult to root for him if this is true.

Who was "the guy [she] worked for"? Both he and the agent have some complicity in what happened to the photographer. She had no business being drug along to the Apple Store.  It's precisely these kind of acts (and omissions) by non-athletes that make fertile ground for these kinds of assaults.

Very good point. Absolutely agree 100%. This is obviously primarily on Sano, but those who enable and look the other way need to be held accountable as well.

What does she mean when she says Twins Daily has been stripped of most of their access?

I'm not sure, but I assume she was referring to TD getting cut off either from parts of Target Field/facilities, or from access to certain Twins management persons. Not sure though exactly.

I totally understand why people are saying they should cut him, but I just don't know if I believe a team would do that.

No. This is a situation where your personal decency would be leveraged by another team for their advantage. Cut Sano and he's picked up 20 seconds later.

If you feel you must move on from him, trade him to another team who wants him and his baggage.

What does she mean when she says Twins Daily has been stripped of most of their access?

1.) Betsy has been at Target Field with credentials secured by Twins Daily.

2.) Twins Daily has not been stripped of most of our access. There have been no changes in this way. We continue to be able to request access at games, spring training, etc.

Interestingly, I saw that Trevor Plouffe tweeted that he believes her and has her back. Not that we shouldn't believe her regardless, but this makes me wonder if Sano has a history of this type of behavior that other players have been aware of in the past.

I believe her.

I'm also not sure what you do as a team. 20-game suspension and team-mandated treatment?

Chapman was suspended by the league for 30 games back in 2015 I believe for offseason personal conduct policy violation for domestic abuse. The Twins could use that as a base.

I’ve known Betsy for a long time. She related this experience to me and others many months ago. There is no reason to doubt its veracity. I speak for the entire Twins Daily ownership group in saying we believe her story, and respect/support her for making the difficult decision to share it publicly.

Agree. I don't like the idea that knowing her makes her story more true -- or more likely to be true -- but I still absolutely believe her. I'm not sure how else to articulate it, you know?

I think that is where you start. However, I would not be opposed to a longer suspension or even dismissal. Develop a no tolerance policy moving forward. Work with educating players throughout the system.

If there is a suspension, I wonder what kind of response there will be from the players union.
